Beautiful game music

So my grandma just talked to me all ecstatic and stuff, turns out she had gone to a video game OST concert and thought it was fricking amazing.

She especially loved the Suikoden and Final Fantasy pieces.

So now I wanna make a CD for her with some of the most beautiful video game music out there.

Wanna help? Orchestral pieces would be best.

--> Zelda theme

--> Call me strange, but I always thought the music from Warcraft 2 was some of the best around

Great one.  This is the end theme to Eternal Sonata, the RPG based on Chopin's life.  It contains spoilers but since the game takes place physically on Chopin's deathbed, you can guess how it ends.

Anyways, it's a great song.

@Omega: Nice, is that an original composition or a Chopin piece?

@B-boy: Loved the Planetside main theme, epic stuff.

@Corribus: Will check out.

Oh no, Chopin could not write that crap. Just some low level pop raped inspired from one of Chopin etudes for piano.

Good, I really like it but I wouldn't include it if it was too similar to the original.

EDIT:

Wtf that Eternal Sonata theme almost made me cry and I haven't even played the game. Damn Japanese, you always do this to me with your RPGs.

Zelda main theme

FF: Prelude theme

FF: To Zanarkand  (maybe most beautiful of all FF songs)

FF: Liberi Fatali

FF: Chocobo Theme  (I love this one)

FF: Aeriths Theme

Anyway, you get the gist.

I'll offer you a few select tracks from various games I have posted on Youtube, I won't recommend any Heroes tracks since I believe you probably already have them handy.

If she liked Final Fantasy's music, I recommend checking out the music from Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Last Story because those are the RPG projects Nobuo Uemasu did after leaving Square to their own devices.

I'd also like to recommend the soundtrack for the game Total Annihilation by Jeremy Soule.

Braid:

Downstream
Romanesca
Lullaby Set

Lords of the Realm 2:

Scroll 1

Battlechess Enhanced:

Blue Advantage

Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim:

BGM 1

I'll look up and see if I can find some good examples of the games I talked about before later.

Feel free to cherry pick from the Axis and Allies RTS and TBSsoundtracks, as well as others.

About the end theme of Eternal Sonata: It does have a resemblance to op. 10 etude 3, but I couldn't really notice it in more than a few short bits of nigh directly nicked melody and the way it kind of sections into parts or something...

By the way, if one should so wish as to such things aurally intake, there's plenty of raped classical music in the soundtrack of the game Catherine. It's pretty cool, but besides the point.

There is the thing with game music that it often enough is in a form that lends itself to being looped with minimal resistance. Ideally the music will not annoy the player upon prolonged looping and it is that what makes it a very different viewpoint to compose from compared to like a ballet suite or sonata. So you know, some pieces from a game soundtrack, though good music they may be, don't necessarily stand very well removed from the game.

If you like solo piano, try the Final Fantasy Piano Collections, there are some pretty good ones there. As much as I love Final Fantasy 9, I'd say it has a bit too much leitmotif.

Piano Collections Final Fantasy - Rose of May It was originally a piano song anyways, so this is just it on steroids.

Piano Collections Final Fantasy - Unrequited Love I actually like this one.

Piano Collections Final Fantasy - Bran Bal, the soulless village One that's a bit more haunting, but nonetheless incandescent. Or one might prefer the arrangement featured in the game: FF9 OST - Bran Bal, the soulless village but that's a loopey loop song without a clear ending.

Oh, I missed

Braid:
Maenam (Title Theme)

Aquaria:
Title Theme

Penumbra Overture:
Title Theme

Blue Dragon (By Nobuo Uemasu):
Waterside ~for Piano and Orchestra~

Waterside ~ for Piano (Title Theme)

The Calm Waterside(Like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and many Heroes games, it has some music that reuses themes)

Main Theme (Also the melody is used in a few other songs as an overarching theme)

Exceed the Land (Overworld theme)

Lost Odyssey (Also Nobuo Uemasu):
Prologue (Title Theme)

Main Theme

The Great Voyage

Seths Theme

Crisis & Warning

Light of Blessing ~ A Letter

An Immortal Life

Parting Forever

I Will Return, No Matter What... (Piano Version) (The part of the game this song played in made me cry)

Neverending Journey

Dragon Age: Origins:
Title Theme

Lords of Everquest (Music by Paul Anthony Romero):
Title Theme

Total Annihilation: (Now THAT is adrenaline pumping orchestra, by Jeremy Soule)
Attack!!!

Death and Decay

March unto Death

Ambush in the Passage

Forest Green

Fire and Ice

Warpath

Civilization 4:
Coronation

Fable:
Main Theme

Lookout Point (Title Theme)

Age of Wonders:
Races at War

Clouds and Feuds

March of the Halflings

Peacefully Deceptive

Outnumbered

Snowscapes

Mountain Song

In the Company Elves

You might consider sharing your Elder Scrolls music as well. I can't play those games myself. First person games make me nauseous.

Oh, and music from Dragon Quest is really good in Orchestra because the composer was insane enough to make it for orchestra BEFORE making the bleep bloop versions for the early consoles.
