HoM&M 1 Music

I bought Heroes Collection (I-V) mainly because I never played Heroes 1 and wanted to for so many years; and now when I finally managed to get my self a copy, of all the 5 games Heroes 1 doesn't work properly >_<

It's fully playable, but without the most important thing in HoMM series, MUSIC! It has 'general' sounds like horse walking, battle attacks  and similar, but there is no Town Music or Main Menu Music. So I decided to browse through the CD and see does it even contain those Music files, (Was delightfully surprised to find a King's Bounty ) and I couldn't find any of the Music files in there so I downloaded them all and I am wondering can I put them in a Heroes 1 folder and make them play somehow..?

Also while browsing through the files In Heroes 1 folder on the CD I found a folder named "ANIM" with .SMK animation of NWC logo and some more "Win/Lose" movie files and none of them are visible in the game! It just skips them, there is no intro.

So can someone help with fixing this or did I just waste my money and should of got an DOS version -_-

P.S. It's Win7 64-bit

NOTE: The Music Files I downloaded are in .mp3 format so they might not be from the original game and also Changing in Game Music option from "8-bit Mono" to "CD Stereo" causes the game to  crush :/

THANKS FOR ANY HELP I'M HONORED TO BE A PART OF HEROES COMMUNITY

I didn't play H1 much, but seem to recall that I dl'd it a couple years ago from Abandonia,(it was said to be abandonware at the time) and it worked fine with DosBox, including proper music playback. I'm not sure, but I think that like H2, it didn't have a proper Music folder, instead storing it in the main .agg file, so there's a chance it can be fixed somehow.(there is a H2 fix for the same problem(only sound effects and MIDI music would play instead of proper CD quality), but I didn't have to try it with H1, and it may be totally ineffective in your case. If it interests You, I'll post it later)

New World Computing has released a three different CD versions of HoMM1:

1. Original DOS release (September 1995, v1.0, v1.1 or v1.2 game versions) which contains three different sound sets on the CD: 8-bit Mono, 8-bit Stereo and 16-bit Stereo. There are no CD-Audio tracks on this CD.
The file names with music should be:
heroes00.82m, heroes01.82m, ..., heroes32.82m, heroes40.82m, heroes41.82m, ..., heroes54.82m, heroes99.82m - 8-Bit Mono Soundset
heroes00.82s, heroes01.82s, ..., heroes32.82s, heroes40.82s, heroes41.82s, ..., heroes46.82s, heroes48.82s, heroes49.82s, ..., heroes54.82s, heroes99.82s - 8-Bit Stereo Soundset
heroes00.62s, heroes01.62s, ..., heroes32.62s, heroes40.62s, heroes41.62s, ..., heroes46.62s, heroes48.62s, heroes49.62s, ..., heroes54.62s, heroes99.62s - 16-Bit Stereo Soundset
2. Original Windows release (February 1996, v1.0) which contains Red Book Audio (CD-Audio) tracks. (*)
3. Combo release DOS v1.3/Windows v1.2 which contains only 8-bit Mono sound set (for DOS) and Red Book Audio (CD-Audio) tracks for Windows. This version also known as Heroes of Might and Magic Compendium CD1 (September 1997).

The New World Computing HoMM Millenium and Platinum compilations contain v1.0 Windows HoMM1 versions similar to (*).

Any later versions of HoMM1 does not contain any soundtrack at all or contains corrupted files that prevents it from playing.
The GoG version of the game is a DOSBOX RIP from a Heroes of Might and Magic Compendium CD1 (so - game version 1.3, only 8-bit Mono DOS Sountrack), nothing more. Sound glitches included. Heh

THANKS FOR QUICK REPLIES

I opened .AGG file and there is no music only sound files which are by the way .82m so no 16-bit Stereo. It doesn't say what version it is, but it was last modified on 31/01/1996 which should have the Audio CD by Bersaglio's description. GOG's version doesn't seem complete, either. It has 9 music tracks while there should be 15. Does having a Red Book Audio tracks mean that the whole CD for Homm1 should be almost full (close to 700mb)? Heroes 1 Instal files on my CD are only 166mb.

I remember having the DOS version some years ago and it had a folder named "MUSIC" where the music was so I just want to know is it possible to add that music folder for it to work or should I buy the Heroes of Might and Magic Compendium CD1 if I can find one? :/

...and I almost forgot, but what about the Intro and rest of .SMK animations/videos?

In DOS version of the game the soundtrack files should be in \HEROES\SOUND folder on the CD.

The HoMM1 for Windows CD have 1 data and 49 audio tracks (Mixed Mode 1 CD-ROM).

On the original HoMM1 for Windows CD the data track is even less (~148Mb). Compendium CD data track is slightly larger (~171Mb).
The full CD image size as follows:
HoMM1 Windows v1.0 ~659Mb
HoMM1 Compendium v1.3DOS/v1.2Win ~699Mb
But I doubt that HoMM1 for Win95 will be working correctly on Win7 x64. Audio tracks from the CD will play correctly only if the game was inserted/mounted in the first CD/DVD drive in the system (with the lowest drive letter). In Windows 95/98 You also need special 4-pin audio cable from your physical drive to the sound card installed.

The proper folder name (on the DOS CD) with soundtrack should be \HEROES\SOUND

HEROES\ANIM folder on the CD (DOS CD or Win v1.0 CD).
HEROES\DANIM folder on the Compendium CD1 (for using with DOS v1.3 game version). Files: EARTH.SMK, INTRO02C.SMK, INTRO02U.SMK, LOSE1.SMK, NWCLOGO1.SMK, NWCLOGO.SMK, WIN01C.SMK, WIN01U.SMK, WIN02.SMK (DOS optimized)
HEROES\ANIM folder on the Compendium CD1 (for using with Win v1.2 game version). Files: INTRO02C.SMK, INTRO02U.SMK, LOSE1.SMK, NWCLOGO1.SMK, NWCLOGO.SMK, WIN01C.SMK, WIN01U.SMK, WIN02.SMK (Win95 optimized)

Found them

There are music files on the CD I just thought they're sounds. They are in 82M format, so now that I finally found them does anyone know how to make them + animations playable in the game? Win95 emulator

Music files are in SOUND folder and there is one ANIM folder with both animation versions in there
INTRO02C.SMK and INTRO02U.SMK
...same for the all other files...
Ones ending with U are probabily for Windows since they're a larger file

Thanks for this post!  It gave me an idea that worked on Win10.

I had done quite a bit of research on this 'no music' issue. Despite the age of the post, wanted to share my 2 cents because I really liked the music in HoMM 1 and I've gotten it to work.

In my case, I still have in my possesion the Windows Platinum Edition discs and just recently purchased the Ubisoft version. It was only ~$30 and comes with Heroes of Might and Magic 1-5. What a great deal!

I just discovered something I think is awesome tonight. Could be a long shot but may work for those reading that have a 1.0 disc version and are using Win10 now.

If I install HoMM1 using the Ubisoft version on Win10, eject the disc, and then put in the Platinum Version HoMM1, I can then launch the game AND IT HAS MUSIC. WOOT! I can even adjust music within the game from mono sound to stereo, quit out and relaunch w/o any issues. I did not have to adjust any of the settings for this to work. I didn't mess with the shortcut compatibility at all, just install, switch disc, and launch from the desktop.

The only issue I've encountered is if I try to set "Full Screen" mode at any point in the game. The game crashes and will not restart. I did not have any success trying to add things like '-windowmode' to the desktop shortcut. SO JUST DON'T DO IT. For a fix  there I just have to reinstall.  I think put screen to the max resolution and hide the taskbar.  Game looks, works, and sounds great.  So happy!

Although I know this may not help the larger masses, if you have an older version you may want to hold onto it. I would have been psyched to find this out a month ago when I first started searching. Hadn't seen it posted elsewhere.

If anyone needs more details please let me know.

Thanks for all the posts here.  Thankful you all took time to post.

Also, about GOG version. Don't play on standard "cycles=max" settings, because it uses 100% CPU (it's known bug, fixed in Russian TE edition for Windows). You must change your settings for DOSBox or use Ctrl + F11 shortkey for decreasing cycles.

Sorry for the bump, it may not be the ideal thread for my question, but couldn't find a better one, and post limit rules won't let me start a new thread.

My question is: Are there actual gameplay differences / bug fixes between DOS versions 1.2 (standalone) and 1.3 (compendium release)?

The limitation of 1.3 to 8-bit mono musoic is pretty annoying for DOS players; It is actually possible to get 1.3 to play the .82s and .62s files if you provide them to it (need to mount directory as CD or burn a custom CD), but at that point you may as well play the original 1.2, no? Unless there are any improvements in 1.3 (of which I couldn't find any documentation).

I realize this is an old post, but if your still around (or someone else can answer), can you provide me with a link that elaborates on this?

I tend to return to this game every 2-5 years, some life event or cleaning around the house and I discover the discs.

However, I'm not sure if its kids or work, I just seem to lack the time and ability to find the information I need with what I "think" is reasonable effort.

However, whether 13 yrs old or 40, this game never gets old to me.
I appreciate the help.

I'm still using the process defined in this thread to hear the music on HOMM1 on Win 10 OS. The game still crashes on me and requires a full reinstall if I attempt to make it full screen. I just can't seem to figure out the root cause.  Sounds like there's a better way with the Ubisoft release of 2007.

What I'm hoping to get here:
Where do I find the complete tracks for HOMM1/where do I place them once I have them - is it that simple?

I'm sure I'll end up making a return once my home PC's are on Windows 11 as well.

Thanks for reading.

The gog version works perfectly fine for me on win 11, music included. No extra steps were needed.

I bought it on gog last year, because I couldn't get the downloaded ababdonware version, I used for almost 2 decades, to run anymore. And the price was negligible.
