Dev Team Q&A about present and future of Heroes VI

An English Q&A with Heroes VI devs at LaTorredeMarfil (it is 5 Pages, for scrolling use arrows)

The good part is that we have some communication coming in our direction too. The bad part is that the answers were doges and excuses and little to no concrete solutions offered.

From the Questions side... they were a little too specific and only 2-3 of the BIG ones were asked.

- Sim turns:
"Sim turn is not exactly a trivial feature to develop. So right now it is not part of our immediate scope. For instance, sim turns were only introduced to Heroes 5 in TotE, its second add-on."

No-one in their right minds would plan for a Heroes 6 multilayer experience without this core feature. And as he rightly points out, it is already available in H5 so how difficult could it have been to include it?

- "Replays usually create high activity in communities, giving player some sort of strategy database. Will they return soon?
This is currently part of our list of features we’d like to add. Stay tuned."

Such a well put question! So looking forward to this feature!!! And pretty sure they have something working already. (I do not know what transpired until now but there is a setting in the users profile for replays already.)

- Talking about the kind of questions I would like to see answered. "Q10: You can build capitol in 4'th day what do you have to say about that?" This must have felt like a "slap in the face", but eventually answered in a true "Dodge-fu" manner.

- Another 2 points: NO mod support for foreseeable future . They intend to improve the editor though(soon).

A light at the end of the tunnel:

We have some development tools. Some ingenious fans found them in the game files, but these are neither user-friendly nor stable. We are currently investigating a way to improve these tools to them “officially” with the community.

Everything else is just "er.. uh.. ehm, well that is... uh... you know... not a priority and well, yeah, no"

Probably because they created them themselves or the cost of replacing them is considered too high.

We are aware of these issues and we are working on them. Balancing process is a very complex and delicate process, as it can break the game and upset thousands of players. So we’re taking our time to find the best solution.
Isn't that cute?

They developed the tools for themselves. So it's not supposed to be user-friendly since they already know what to do with it.  The stability part is probably the same thing: since they developed the tools for themselves, they didn't implement things like parameter validations, limits and such.  So, someone not in the know could potentially break the game by not using the right parameters.

This is something really frequent in programming.  Building tools to help with your application development is essential.  But you don't want to take too much time developing them. So the things considered unnecessary are usually left behind (user-friendliness, help in application, validations, etc.)

The tools they have are more than I ever expected and they go out of their way to keep them not available. No tools is worse than unpolished ones.

Big loss imo since many are just waiting for this to start some modding on their own. And what would be the reason not to make them available now its beyond me. There is a "working" back engineered tool available so... release the gd tools already!

I don't know, I would have thought that no tool was better than bad tools.

I've also used some so called tools in programmation, and actually, I figured it was easier to do everything myself than trying to correct the mess bad tools create.

Indeed, notepad > bad tools.

If I wasn't done with the game already, I am now after reading that interview.  I beat all campaigns, and the multiplayer is unplayable b/c of terrible AI, too long of turns, and lack of simultaneous turns.

The interview highlights that the developers' priorities are not in line with what I'm looking for in the game.  It really does make me sad, especially when I go back to previous Homms and see how well they're made.

Exactly.

But just who is the idiots that made this interview. What a piece of snow!
Most of his questions are completely trivial compared to all the big ones he should have asked and insisted on.

He doesn't even ask a question about academy : One of the tree most emblematic faction in all the HOMM series.
He's giving them bad ideas by not asking about this faction.

he should also have asked about the small size of the battlemap, and the overall over-simplification of the games (nom more caravan, fewer resources...)
He should also have asked about possible alternative upgrades.
...

I just want to punch the guy that made this interview, honnestly...

Is there a way for a more intelligent dude to make another interview?

Am I the only one who does not give a freaking black hell about this overused faction?

I just see it as boaring since heroes III.

Perhaps stating the obvious, but let's go for it anyway.
I think, Dave, that it is less about you being the only one who not cares and more about Gueul directing a lot of conversations in that direction.
On the one hand, I can not blame Gueul much. Academy has been a classic faction and it is rather a shame that it has been cut from the vanilla version of Heroes VI.(there appearantly being hints in the code of originally intending to include it)
On the other hand I agree with Dave that Academy has been very samy over the years. The same could be said of other factions, but I think that it is especially true with Academy.

I love Academy too but I admit it's the most difficult one to re-invent. If we get it in H6, I don't expect many changes, just like with Stronghold.

My problem with academi is not that much in art design and gameplay (even if it does not fit me, that is my personal problem)

But more in the fact of inovation

Think about it for a second. Many people considere 4-5 factions for heroes as core. (Heaven, Necropolis, Academy, Inferno and Dungeon).

I personaly like to take out the inferno and stay to the 6 factions that were in heroes II but that is a PO (Personal opinion)

But how many stories can you write that start with the sentence

A knight, a necromancer, a wizzard, a demon and a warlock went in to a bar"

This set of factions is just too limiting. And their background stories are not even that interesting. But to play an epic saga about the war under the mountains betwee DE and Dwarves, that is a thing I would like to see. But sadly, there is so much hate ageinst the dwarves that there is almost no chance of that.

My personal dream is, to get a heroes game, which would not have a haven style faction in its initial releas.

And pleas do not talk about the gameplay now. You can make any faction work in any style if you give theme the proper tools. But the repeating use of the same factions for vanila limits the options of a story, and we all know, how bad the stories are. Why limit them even more.

Just look at Heroes VI, The secreat war between the Faceless and the Angels was a good base. And that the Angels breeded humans to house the souls of there fallen brethren was also a nice idea.
But what we got from this, not so bad looking idea? A teenage sopeopra about 5 kids who whine about there fate.

Oh, mine too! Outside H4 I couldn't think of the human faction as little more than the necessary bad in the game.

<imo> Wizards are a traditional part of HoMM and should never be left out.

As far as new; for my tastes, I would put the Tower<L> back into the mountains. It doesn't have to be the snowy ones of H3. <imo> the sand theme may have been good for genies but the Titan's need clouds to call lightning and make storms

Waterfall gremlins, avalanche-genies, rockthrowing-golems, mountain-goat-gargoyles and abominable snowmen guarding the Titians and Mages should work just fine. At least that's what Halon told me
