Post your Rig

Case doesn't have any space to hide cables behind the motherboard... still like it.
Managed to do with only 4 cables from the new modular PSU... was a bit of a hassle and got really tight in a few spaces but... yeah.

The case has a black perforated plate in the front so the front fans are invisible when it's turned off, and then the dual shurikens light up when I start it. Love it.

Been considering getting one of them NZXT fan controllers to put in the front as well... just cuz they're kinda sexy and I like the sense of control.

Case: Antec Three Hundred
Processor: AMD Phenom II X2 560 3.30 GHZ
Memory: 4,00 GB
Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5850 Xtreme 1GB
PSU: Corsair HX650W

Post yours

(And posting oil rigs gives QI obvious minus points)

Hey! You have both an Antec Three Hundred, Saphire Radeon HD 5850 and a Corsair HX650W! Propably the most price worthy chassis out there. So cheap and while not excellent, it's clearly a good and solid one.

My rig is then very similar
Case: Antec Three Hundred
Processor: Intel i5 750 (4x2.66GHz)
Memory: 4,00 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Motherboard: Asus P7P55D Pro edition
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5880
PSU: Corsair HX650W
HDD: Hitache, 500GB, 7200RPM (had to just get A drive when my old one crashed a few months ago)

My two front fans aren't blue and glowy though... instead I have fan controls.

Well that's just freaky haha

Yeah I love the chassis... clean and stylish and most importantly: no see-through sideplate. I find those kinda silly.

I installed the HX650W today... modulars are so neat... real joy to work with.

And yeah you don't need pics although I do wanna see your stuff. Especially Darksy's water cooling system that apparently tops my Cooler Master penis enhancer.

You want my rig, eh?! You want pictures? Well, I only have the camera on my phone, and it sucks, but I'll give you the tour to my computer corner, 'k?

Picture 1

Exhibit A1: Full 5.1 dell j2523 surround system with randomly placed satellites. Only ten years old now, and only a moderate ammount of issues!

Exhibit B1: Roccat Kave 5.1 surround headphones with microphones. I got these instead of a camera, as the surround system very well might brake down any day... and has done so several times the last few years (but I've kept it alive!). I also comes with a hardware driven volume-equiliser-thinge as well as software driven general soundcontrols (that I also use to control the volume for the speakers, as the controller for those broke a few months ago), neatly covering up my fan(don't worry, it's turned off anyways).

Exhibit C1: Pile of chords... It's a corner behind the computer, under the table... excellent place to have them.

Exhibit D1: Since I built the computer in school a few years ago now, 23 other people built their computers at the same time. Obviously I stole as many stickers I could and covered the whole computers with stickers... then I removed most of them.

Picture 2

Exhibit A2: An old 1280x1024 SyncMaster 730BF that I might've stolen from that school I mentioned earlier... What?! It was broken and in the garbage, so I fixed it! That's how I used to get stuff back then, when I didn't really have any money to spend on anything besides food and bills.

Exhibit B2: Small metal case sticking to the metal railings my table is fixed upon (this allows me to adjust height rather easily), filled with fisherman's friends (a.k.a. addiction Nr. 1), stabilized with a bottlecap and a magnet.

Exhibit C2: Bottle of water. Always keeping a bottle of water close by.

Exhibit D2: Mug perpetually containing a hot beverage. Almost exclusively coffee or tea (a.k.a. addiction Nr. 2).

Exhibit E2: My new mouse that I got a few weeks ago, after the one I might've stolen from the same, aforementioned school broke in september, which I also got instead of a camera. Old time favourite X7 series. That's the way I like it.

Exhibit F2: Drawing Pad, Wacom Bamboo Pen, working as secondary mouse (and was my primary mouse for half a year) as well as storage surface when not in use.

Exhibit G2: Blind bag Pinkie Pie standing next to my old, old webcam, both standing on top of my Thomson Router... yes, Puinkie Pie can see all of my porn from there, but my webcam cannot. Perhaps luckily, I don't watch that much porn... though I do keep running into MLP R34 all the time...

Exhibit H2: See Exhibit C1.

Picture 3

Exhibit A3: My chair. It's a chair made for sitting... or so I was told, though I doubt it on a daily basis. Adjustable by external pillows.

Here's my rig thingy:

edit: It successfully ran The Witcher 2 but I'm going to have to buy another real PC at some point if I continue to do any demanding PC gaming.

Btw for you guys that build your own computers: where did you acquire the knowledge to do that? Did you just read a lot of material online and then order individual parts and go with it? From a laymen point of view I'd be a bit antsy about ****ing something up and suddenly everything explodes. Maybe I'm just overestimating how difficult it really is. It's suppose to be highly cost effective though, ya? I might do it next time if it's not as dramatic as it seems.

Ok, first there's the list of stuff you need:

CPU (processor)
Motherboard
Chassis
RAM (memory)
PSU (power supply)
GPU (graphics card)
HDD (Hard drive)

Mostly the the error you can do is get an incompatible motherboard, so that's mostly what you have to keep an eye on. After that there are some stuff that are easy to judge from RAW data, such as harddrives (RPM and buffer vs. storage... the higher RPM and buffer means a faster drive and storage is obvious), while others are really difficult to measure in numbers, especially GPU. The only way to know is through experience and listening to people with such experience. Here! I'll make you a guide to building a standard computer!

First you should choose which price range you want and maybe prioritize a bit, but I'll leave that to you to improvise.
Choose a category of brands: Either you go for (Asus,) Intel and nVidia or you go for AMD and ATI. They will usually pair up like that. Everything is crosscompatible, but one might as well do it like this, and it will usually make the choice of motherboard easier later on.
The core of the computer is the CPU, so chooce wisely. Standard today is 2-3GHz on a quad core processor. Personally I think CPU power is overrepresented today, so I'd say a high performance dualcore (3.5GHz and up) will usually do fine, but that may be an aging thought. Be very ware of the socket you choose. It's crucial that your motherboard uses the same socket!
Now get a GPU and some memory. I prefer the ATI alternatives and would say that HD4800-series would be low end and 6800-series would be high end. nVidia would instead be GeForce 200-series to 600-series. Also note that GTX is more powerful than GT.If you're planning on getting a really expensive GPU you might want to check Crossfire or SLI on wikipedia, for ATI and nVidia respectively.
To that you add some memory. Memory is crazy cheap these days, so you can just frolic in it. 4GB is low end (32-bit OS is limited to 4GB of memory, 64-bit is limited to 192 GB (so that shouldn't be an issue just yet)) and 8 GB is almost standard nowadays, but crazy cheap, as I said. Keep an eye on how many slots you're using and what speed you get. 1333MHz is a fast, common and cheap speed to get. Since DDR3 is standard and limited to 1600MHz you're not really missing out anyways.
Now for an HDD or two. The standards are rather expensive since the earth quakes and tsunamis in east Asia the last year or so, since most of them are made there. This has, by comparison, made the faster SSDs cheaper, which increased sales and actually lowered the prices. An SSD is several times faster than the standard mechanical drives, but they get less storage space. A common thing to do if you want high performance is to get an SSD to put your OS on and some core software (maybe 32GB for example) and then get a standard mechanical one with lots of space. I'll just talk about the mechanical ones. Speed of 7200RPM is a good, standard speed. Storage space is for you to determince. Get 3.5", with S-ATA. Getting an SSD disc as well would I considered an advanced feature that you should only get if you're planning on spending a lot of money on your rig.
Now the three things that is kind of determined by what you choose before this. When you get your motherboard you should double check processor socket, that you have enough memory slots, that the motherboard supports the speeds on your memory and supports that ammount of memory. You might also want to check what kind of integrated sound card you get, if you're planning on using 5.1 make sure you get that or higher. USB 3 might also be worth checking, but that I would also consider an advanced feature, that is starting to become standard.
Get a chassis that you like. I like the Antec Three Hundred. It's not the best and it's not fancy or anything, but it's highly functional and cheap. If you're feeling paranoid you can check that the chassis and motherboard are both ATX (but they will be). If you want something fancy you should get Cooler Master. Maybe even liquid cooling and stuff.
Finally, you should get a PSU... now, this is kind of hard to choose, but it's better to get a bit too much than to get too little. 400W is enough for a low end computer, but if you're getting double GPU's, a high performing, a large chassis with several large fans, cool blinking pimplights and planning on connecting a lot of cool USB gadgets, then a more powerful one is needed. Keep an eye on the number of fans; there's usually 1 for the CPU, one for the PSU and two in the chassis (one in and one out). Anything more than that I'd consider extra and a reason to get a more powerful PSU (like the one you'll propably get on any even remotely costly GPU, like an extra fan or two in the chassis).

Now, you get information by reading it, talking about and whatnot. You hopefully picked up something from my minor wall of text.
Wikipedia articles on these things tend to be very technical and afraid of stating opinions ("Which is better?" is the question you want answered, and that is an opinion, often even when one of them "is" better), but I know that there are plenty of good computer magazines that will teach you and keep you informed. Try to read reviews, critiques and tests. I studied computery stuff in lower secondary and learned a lot from just talking to fellow geeks about computery stuff, and it was a great incentive to learn more on my own and get valid and trusted scources. I'm afraid that my three primary scources are in Swedish though... oddly enough.

Thanks.

This prompted me to do a search on it and the first thing I found was a very nice step-by-step lesson guide. Worst case scenario I can nag my older brother about it and he'd probably build one for me voluntarily He's really into that stuff so it would definitely be very nicely optimized.

Reporting in.

Funny when the tech-guys get a problem... then they start calling each other...

Friend: "Dude my computer is effed up, can you explain this?"
Me: "What? You're better at computers than I am!"
Friend: "Everyone calls me when they have problems but WHO THE HELL do I call?!"

Quote:

Yup, and if you check some of the old PC threads from when I was building it I was nervous as heck. Thought things were gonna blow up for sure but... the community convinced me.

I planned quite a lot for how I was going to install everything but I found it really easy once I had fitted in the motherboard and started using its manual... kinda goes natural from there on out... just... do what the manual says

And yeah, saves a lot a money.

@Shares: Awesome guide man

Look what a favour I did to this community by scouring the depths of the cyber-world and dragging this lost soul back to the forums.

And yeah... I'm on top of the metaphorical food chain for tech support though... Whenever I get proplems I have to fix them myself. I guess the guy above me would be that relative over in Finland.

Here's a nifty link for PSU.
Notice that you should always aim to have around 70-80% usage of the max output of your PSU for maximum efficiency. The calculator up there already takes it into account.

Oh yeah, when building a PC just have another PC with net connection and a lot of beer/tea/coke or whatever you fancy drinking at hand.
I told this to Ad back in the day too.

Full of truth! When I owned might be Finland's first 3000 MHz machine. This after 3000 mhz machines are not 6 months in Finland, only August 3200 mhz machines are the trade. My display card was Geforce 5200, ok. Doom3 game is coming, I checked that the motherboard is too old, so I watched a computer magazine. Reported that the last Geforce 7800 gs suitable for old motherboards. I bought the cheap. Later, the power supply is running out (3 years, lasted until the end ), I read again the computer magazine, so I bought the best. 5 years after the energy source powering the back end, I went to a tuners computer trade, I asked whether the basic power supply 500w? Yeah, this is a basic power supply. Ok, and I went home. What? Not suitable for anything but completely different. I donated to my friend Dr. computer and pirate party (I urge to play Homm ) You can not rely on the self! So I bought four of the basic power supplies at the end. Need ever to 32-bit system!
