AMD can save you some money, with a modern quad core of any make you only need a decent video card.

Seems a lot of people are upgrading lately... myself included. Now my completely decent gaming computer is a monster... I guess it's time to get back into 3d graphics then... really needed that extra RAM for multitasking and for the heavy stuff. Feels good, man.

THE MERGING IS COMPLETE

Man this thing was a joy to build in. It's just filled to the brim with smart solutions, like the tool-less 5.25" installations and HDD brackets, not to mention the built in fan-controller (the blue lights on the lower right top are the controllers). SO MUCH SMART.

NZXT Phantom, I recommend it.

EDIT: Updated pic.

expensive?

What kind of air circulation does it have? Unnecessary dust in holes?

Had it for 1 day so far so can't comment on dust, it's very open though and not many hidey-holes to speak of. Got enough space in there to hide an illegal immigrant family if I want to.

Stock it has 2x 120mm side fan intakes, 1x 200m top exhaust (space for 1 more) and 1x 120mm rear exhaust. I installed a front 120mm intake on top of that from my old case.

It also has space for an extra huge-ass side fan but I reckon that one will just mess up the airflow completely, no reason to have it... maybe for exhaust I dunno... will probably get in the way of my CPU cooler.

Got mine for 138 EUR.

EDIT:

Interior.

It's great we have this thread.

I'm in dire need for a new computer and this time I'm entertaining the idea of putting one together myself.  Never done it before, but sounds like it can't be too hard.  Right?

Anyway, here's my current planned build.  Any thoughts are welcome.

@Joonas: Yeah very similar interior, I had my eyes on that case as well for a while... I like Corsair stuff.

No the holes aren't dustproofed, the only openings that aren't covered by mesh.

EDIT:

Current specs:

Case: NZXT Phantom Black
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHZ BE
Memory: 4,00 GB
Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5850 Xtreme 1GB
PSU: Corsair HX650W

@Corribus: Looks nice to me, very powerful.

Change the hard drive to Caviar black, I know it's twenty bucks more but you also get a 5 year warranty compared to 1 year.

No knowledge on crucial memories, if you know it's good go for it. Otherwise pick corsair, that's something known to be good and with a lifetime warranty.

Otherwise, seems good to go.

@Ad:
Don't the holes suck in dust from the floor then?

Ah but there's the genius part, I clean the floor.

Dunno, shouldn't get too much dust in there. Guess I could buy some kinda mesh material and put in there.

I would, it doesn't matter how clean it is, there's still some dust floating around.

Here's something handy I can recommend. Arctic Silver ArctiClean.

Thermal compound remover, makes switching coolers real easy... don't have to use potentially harmful substances to remove the compound, and ya get a purifier thingy to put on afterwards that gives a bit of better heat transfer. Makes your stuff look new and shiny.

A bottle will probably last you a dozen computers.

Cheap and also smells delicious. You'll want to eat it.

A few things.

- your first self built computer has to have better cpu cooler as the stock cooler

- Get cooling paste it is what transfers the heat the stock coolers only come with a little bit.

He doesn't have to have a new cooler but it certainly helps, especially with sound levels.

That depends completely on the stock cooler. I have a boxed e4400 running at 3GHz with the stock cooler and it's still silent. I can't hear it over the GPU or PSU coolers.

Oh yeah, do you need the motherboard to have WiFi?
If not, this one should do as well. Unless you plan to overclock it a lot.

That might be but seperate coolers are always better as the stock coolers. And it is not as if we are talking about hundreds of dollars for 40 dollar you can pretty much buy any cooler you want. and it will increase your cpu life. Besides your cpu might aswell look pretty on the inside.

But even if you decide not to get a seperate cooler get cooling paste. It is like 50 cents and it will help keeping that temperature down.

I would also go for this SSD instead.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147134

Pretty small price difference but the specs are better on alot of points.

Well of course you need thermal compound your CPU will overheat in seconds without it. You can't not have it.

And from my experience the stock coolers come with more than enough of it, you only need a very thin layer.
