In the light of the coming Witcher 3, I'm considering the (quite possibly) final upgrade to my old PC so it can handle the game without coughing its transistors out - the CPU. Currently I'm on a fairly old Phenom II which did its job quite well throughout the years but its age starts to show.

So, having in mind that I have to fit the thing into an AM3+ socket, so far the most suitable replacements which I have found are AMD FX-8300 and FX-8320E. Both 8-cores, quite similar in general with the latter supporting Turbo Core on top of the casual stuff (which I haven't seen in action yet and it seems to generate mixed feelings among the Internet population). The power consumption appears to be decently low so my 550W power supply should handle it.

Anyone with impressions from these two? Or other ideas for a relatively up to date AM3+ compatible CPU?

Likewise, I'm currently looking to upgrade my rig. Having diffuculty sussing out my current cpu capacity and my power n ****.

Currently running with an AMD HD 6670 2gb video card, looking to replace it with an AMD R9 270X 4GB 1020MHz GDDR 5 PCI Express.

Not sure how memory and processing power work though, got 8gig RAM so I doubt I'll need more, but I assume that my processor will need upgrading too.

Edit:

Turns out I need to scratch my old motherboard so I though that I might as well ditch my old computer case as well.

Also Jenny, what type of a component is a HyperX Fury 240GB SSD? Initally I thought that it was memory, but it seems to be some kind of performance booster.

Alright looking back I looked like a right noob, thinking of getting an SSD once my first paycheck comes through mid September, bought a new HDD but ran into so many problems trying to clone my OS as my old harddrive is on full meltdown so can't salvage it (decided to just outright buy a new Windows 7 spent all day sorting this out and it's not worth it in terms of time /= money).

Also upgraded my processor cooling, unfortunately when removing the fan the processor jumped out of its socket which was quite ****ing scary (have the same Evo motherboard as you Jenny have you noticed that your processor isn't that secure?). So after prying each pin back in place I finally managed to get things in order.

*BUMP*

Looking for some help and recommendations. It's been about 5 years since I built my last PC. I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade, but I haven't kept up with latest hardware. I'd like to stick with the same chassis, hard drive, Blu-ray and CD writer (hardly use), and power supply if possible, which means basically upgrading MB, processor, graphics card, memory. I don't really need the absolute latest thing so as to keep the cost reasonable, just a solid upgrade.

Any thoughts?

Corribus, if you would please answer the following questions I believe it would be very useful:

1. What's your maximum budget?

2. How soon do you want to acquire components (it matters for market offers, promotions if any, etc.)

3. Do you have any preference when it comes to Intel or AMD processors? What about a vendor?

4. Do you have any preference for nVidia or AMD graphics cards? What about a vendor?

5. Does your configuration require a new monitor? If not, what is your current monitor's resolution and what connectors does it support (VGA, DVI, HDMI, DP)?

6. What do you want to use your PC for? If you plan to use it for professional work or video rendering, please provide the name of the programs.

7. Do you plan to overclock?

8. Do you want your PC to be as silent as possible or is that not a priority?

9. General aspect might be important. Do you wish for a specific theme? Do you want your case to have a transparent side?

10. Do you own other components you wish to use when assembling your system? If yes, please provide their specifications.

11. Do you want peripherals as well?

12. Do you trust people on the internet building your PC?

Budget is flexible, but I think if I could get away with spending less than $800 I'd be happy. But that's not a hard limit.

I will use it for standard stuff but also games. I don't need to run games necessarily at the absolute highest settings.  My current computer actually still performs reasonably well.  I recently played Witcher 3 with no issues and was happy with the performance.  Just a bit of an upgrade is what I'm looking at.  I realize we are kind of in a time where hardware requirements for games don't change nearly as rapidly as they used to.

For reference I am currently running an Intel core i5 3570k, Radeon HD6950 GPU, ASUS P8-Z77b mb. My power supply is a corsair hx-650w. 8GB physical memory.

EDIT

@Stevie

1. What's your maximum budget?

Addressed above.

2. How soon do you want to acquire components (it matters for market offers, promotions if any, etc.)

No rush. Maybe within a month or two.

3. Do you have any preference when it comes to Intel or AMD processors? What about a vendor?

I have usually liked Intel. In the past I bought most of my components at Newegg, with a few at a local computer retailer.

4. Do you have any preference for nVidia or AMD graphics cards? What about a vendor?

Not really.

5. Does your configuration require a new monitor? If not, what is your current monitor's resolution and what connectors does it support (VGA, DVI, HDMI, DP)?

No I'd like to keep my current monitor, via HDMI.

6. What do you want to use your PC for? If you plan to use it for professional work or video rendering, please provide the name of the programs.

No professional video rendering.

7. Do you plan to overclock?

No.

8. Do you want your PC to be as silent as possible or is that not a priority?

Quiet is nice, but not strictly important. My current computer is fine, and I didn't take any special steps about noise.

9. General aspect might be important. Do you wish for a specific theme? Do you want your case to have a transparent side?

I'd like to use my current case.

10. Do you own other components you wish to use when assembling your system? If yes, please provide their specifications.

My DVD writer is an ASUS drive. My hard drive, which is not a solid state drive. And my power supply, given above.

11. Do you want peripherals as well?

Meaning?

12. Do you trust people on the internet building your PC?

I'll build it myself.

Peripherals means mouse, keyboard, headset, etc.

I need to know what your case is as well. Wire management and space are pretty important, certain motherboards and graphics cards don't always fit. Also, what is your heatsink? Do you require one with the processor or are you confident in the one you own.

EDIT: Never mind about the motherboard and GPU, I'll take your old ones as reference.

No I don't need any of that stuff. The case is also a Corsair. I'm fairly sure this is the model:

I don't have any crazy cooling systems, just whatever came with the CPU chip.

Alright, here's my recommendations for you and I will explain my choices. I'll use Newegg to link the products.

CPU: i7-7700K for $339.99 OR i5-7600K for $239.99.
The choice depends entirely on your budget and whether you want to make use of any promotion (two free games seems quite attractive). The i7 is better overall, it has excellent frequency and turbo boost and, since it is a K series, it is unlocked right out of the box for potential overclocking. Compared to the i5, it has 4 cores which is the same, but it has 8 threads instead of 4. That means that it'll be better in spreading the workload and your system will be better at multitasking. AMD does an even better job at that, being the best on the current market at handling streaming and rendering, but Intel has the best per core performance and it tops anything in terms of gaming and single core-related tasks. Since you said you're not interested in doing anything too professional, you're better off with Intel.

MB: ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING for $134.99 OR anything else on this page really.
1151 socket for the CPU, ATX to fit your case, it supports Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) which is very useful to easily clock your memory, it also has Sli and CrossFireX if you ever want to do that. Asus is my brand of choice as well.

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 for $299.99 OR any other GTX above 1060.
I would say that the lower limit is a 3GB nowadays in terms of gaming, so I wouldn't buy anything than 1060 series or above (the one that I linked has 6GB). It supports VR, G-Sync, multi-projection, etc. The unfortunate thing is that for the past few months there has been a rise in prices of GPUs, the culprit being Ethereum, a new cryptocurrency entering the market that prompted a lot of people to buy as many efficient GPUs for the purpose of mining. As a result, the stocks of GPUs went low and the prices went up and even though the craze is starting to tone down, the prices remain inflated. Still, Asus has a decent offer I would say.

Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB for $174.99.
Since your old memory is likely DDR3, you will need to either buy new DDR4 or reconsider what motherboard I suggested to support DDR3. I would recommend the former. 16GB of memory is more than enough for any desktop activity and since it's XMP ready, you will have no problem setting the right speeds since the RAM comes with pre-installed profiles that automatically do that for you.

Let's say that you settle for the i7, and with everything else that would make around 950$. That might be a bit above your desired budget, but not with much (and you get 2 free games, yay!). When I made my rig this summer, I personally wanted to be a bit more future-proof rather than try to save my money, so I invested more than I had planned and assembled a nuclear submarine (UserBenchmark). Never been happier. However, if I were you, I would really, really want to buy a SSD. It makes all the difference.

Good luck and I hope this helps you.
