The Serpent Cult: Reloaded

Once upon a time I made a faction called the Serpent Cult for an ICTC contest. They lived in a swamplandish-kinda-place just south of Ashan. Then H6 came and the goddamn Naga decided to live there, the basterds. So me and my snake-pals are moving to the desert!

This is The Serpent Cult: Reloaded. My favourite faction concept redone. Almost nothing remains of the original faction save the basic Serpent-worshipping theme and 2 of the creatures.

So yeah, let's rock!

Welcome to the Shrine, home to the Serpent Cult and its followers.

Where other people worship gods shrouded in magic and mystery, our God resides among us. In our capital, The Grand Oasis, resides the great God Snake, the true and only God, he whispers The Way to our empress; The Mouth of God.

Through our knowledge of poison, venom and disease we infiltrate and infect the ranks of our enemies. Like a constrictor snake, as our enemy breathes unwarily we tighten our grip, slowly we gain the upper hand.

His Will, Her Voice, Our Loyalty.

Town Name: Shrine
Also Known As:  The Serpent Cultists
Associated colours:  Orange, red and green.
Town Architecture:  White, rounded stone buildings, with colourful decorations.
Worship: The God Snake and his mortal speaker; The Mouth of God.
Country/Kingdom:  The deserts beyond the Savage Sea.
Capital city: The Grand Oasis
Key symbols:

The symbol of the Serpent Cult

The symbol of the Cobra caste of warriors.

The God Snake describes itself as a fallen dragongod, betrayed by his comrades who cut off his wings and let him crash into the desert he once ruled from his spirit realm. For millennia he rested, slowly healing his wounds but alas, his wings would not grow back. Stripped of godhood, the God Snake swore an oath of revenge against his former comrades. Alas, the God Snake was not powerful enough to accomplish his objective alone...

Still in possession of some degree of divine power, the God Snake started shaping the life of the desert into his image and claiming it as his land once again. Human settlers were welcomed and then indoctrinated by his power, becoming fanatical worshippers and building grand cities in his honour. Under his command, the southern deserts bloomed.
While his former comrades had become passive deities that rarely communicated with their followers, the God Snake stood as a true, undeniable god that slowly but surely attracted followers from all over Ashan.

Today the God Snake is rarely seen, preferring to rest in a giant cave system below the Grand Oasis. From the great desert, he commands his forces to sail the Savage Sea and slay everyone who opposes his will, and let everyone who recognizes his divinity join his people.

Chosen through a long ordeal of trials, the Mouth of God is an individual who survives drinking from the God Snake's venom. In most cases, the venom corrupts the body and turns the victim into a horrendous, twisted mix of snake and human that rarely lives longer than a few minutes. A few select however, survive the venom and absorb it into their bodies. A more subtle transformation occurs, granting a telepathic link with the God Snake himself that lets the Mouth of God communicate the god's wishes to the people. Additional abilities are gained as well, such as the ability to summon and command all manners of serpent creatures and secrete deadly venoms.

The current leader of the Serpent Cult, Velena is widely considered one of the most powerful and dangerous individuals on Ashan, both in terms of personal power and that of her following.
Her ascension ritual was remarkable in that among her ranks were 6 survivors (out of 84) that managed to absorb the God Snake's venom. Caring little for more than one Mouth, the God Snake telepathically ordered the survivors to slay each other until only one remained. Velena, though still dazed from the transformation, adapted to her new powers extraordinarily fast and killed all 5 of her opponents personally with snakes summoned from her body.

Non-Serpent Cult individuals that have encountered her describe her as possessing an otherworldly beauty as well as an even more otherworldly mind. Her words are soothing and full of promise, and many are the men and women who have found themselves in allegiance with the Serpent Cult after agreeing to a devilish deal that no sane man would accept.

The general consensus among lords and generals is that one shouldn't gaze into her eyes, and absolutely not touch her. As Velena enters a room the immediate reaction is to bow your head and stare at the floor, and hope that her gentle fingers do not grasp your chin and lift your head for her to gaze into your eyes.

In her short time of reign Velena has completely re-organized the Serpent Cult's military, granting it much needed flexibility for her upcoming invasion of the "promised land". She created the Serpent Lord and Venomancer castes, and her blood was instrumental in creating the mutagens that are now standard miltary issue in the Serpent Cult's ranks.

Soon her fleet will reach the promised land, and her army of mutated soldiers and deadly serpents will cut a swath of destruction upon all who oppose her and the God Snake. Even now, despite the Empire's efforts to silence the rumours, the common folk tremble at the mention of the "Snake Goddess"...

Recent History

A Serpent Cult army lead by Velena the Mouth of God has reached the imperial lands. In its wake, a terrifying plague known as Bloodrot is spreading among the population, with rumours being that it has been unleashed by the Serpent Cult to weaken their enemies.

However, the Serpent Cult has extended its hand in using their superior medical skill to help the afflicted, and has so far been successful in curing many villages of the plague.

Velena promotes a peaceful spreading of their religion, and their armies are yet to clash with any enemy forces. On the southern shores, the Serpent Cult quickly builds settlements and fortifies their defences.

As the plague spreads the common people suffer, and the Serpent Cult seems to be the only ones capable of curing it. Lords that refuse the Serpent Cult's help have their people dying or rebelling on them, and the ones that accept the help are open to the Serpent Cult spreading their ways and religion among the people.

Faction Relations

The Empire
The plague has struck the human empire the worst, with a large percentage of the people being infected. The Serpent Cult has reached out its hand to help with the recovery, something the nobles currently reject fully; consorting with heretics is not considered an option, and commoners are instructed to simply put their life in Elrath's hands.
Discontent is building among the lower classes however, and if the Empire does not handle the situation quickly there may be a revolution coming. Rumours of an incoming full war between the Empure and the Serpent Cult are spreading.

The Necromancers
Necromancers are considered disgusting heretics by the majority, and their immunity to the recent plague released by the Serpent Cult has made negotiations difficult. What's more, Necromancers are seemingly immune to Velena's charms, which resulted in a quite comical situation at the first meeting of the two forces; this is rumoured to be the only time when Velena has actually looked surprised, something the Necromancers take great pride in. "The temptations of flesh are ineffective on us, young sorceress", was the words of a Necromancer Lord.

The Infernal Demons
Serpent Cult opinion of demons are not that different from the general Ashan opinion: they are hated and considered kill on sight. Chaos worshippers found in the cities are often tortured with exotic venoms before being executed. Rumours say that the Snake God's elemental dragon ancestry lets him feel chaos taint in individuals, leading to very few chaos covens being started in fear of being discovered. Overall, chaos has found little sanctuary in the desert lands.

The Naga
The Naga are generally respected in the Serpent Cult, admired for both their snake-like appearance and honorary culture. However, they are distinct from the Serpent Cult in that they are sea serpents, and visiting Naga often have great trouble keeping themselves hydrated in the dry desert lands. Naga often have to bring servants that pour water on them constantly, or stay close to the centre of the Grand Oasis where the air is most humid. This has lead to some satire and racism from the Serpent Cult people, with remarks such as "Oh look a Naga... bring the buckets" being quite common, many cultists think they are giving too much leisure and think of their race of "serpent folk" as superior. A small scandal involving a mutagen specialist taking samples of Naga tissue for his experiments has currently shaken up relations with the Naga a bit, but aside from that all is calm.
Velena currently ignores the Naga, save for some peaceful talks now and then. They are not considered a threat.

The Orcs
The Serpent Cult has had little success in their diplomatic discussions with the Orcs, who distrust them heavily. Orcs suffering from Bloodrot who have turned to the Serpent Cult for help have been marked as traitors and cut down, and the few who have managed to join the Serpent Cult are distrusted because of their demonic heritage.
Orcs who subject themselves to mutagenic experiments have splendid results however, being able to take on way higher doses than humans are capable of and gaining extraordinary powers.
As such, the Serpent Cult largely ignores the Orcs' demonic side in favour of their potential as soldiers, and are considered potential allies of great importance.

In this faction, I have decided to use a slightly modified version of H6's tier system, using 4 tiers instead of 3. This lets the creatures have more difference in power, and is in my opinion, a better compromise between the classic 7 tier system and the H6 system.

Serpent Lords typically originate in the Cobra Warrior caste, where warriors who react to mutagens most effectively are selected.
Serpent Lords have almost no human traces left, being more snakelike than anything else.
Their tactical abilities are honed to perfection, allowing them to command the vicious beasts of the Serpent Cult effortlessly and use specialized mutagens to make their soldiers stronger.

The most powerful sorcerers of the Serpent Cult, Venomancers are master alchemists and strategists. When not commanding hordes of serpents, one can often find Venomancers in the dark underground of the Grand Oasis,
where they tirelessly strive to concoct new and better venoms. On the battlefield, Venomancers are feared enemies capable of using their serpent allies' venomous abilities to deadly effect.

Serpent Cult Racial Ability: Detonate
Inflicting venoms (see Venomancy section) in battle fills the Detonate Gauge, available to both the Serpent Lord and the Venomancer.
Detonate can be used against enemies suffering from Venom effects to inflict its full potential effect on the enemy immediately.

The Detonate Gauge has 4 stages, and a hero may choose how much of the gauge to consume when using Detonate. Detonating one enemy creature consumes 1 stage of the Detonate Gauge, so at maximum charge a Serpent Cult hero may detonate up to 4 enemy creatures in one turn.

An ancient art combining magic and alchemy, Venomancy is a crucial part of Serpent Cult warfare.
Venomancy is used to control and manipulate the venomous powers of serpents, allowing the Serpent Cult commanders to grant their allies deadly biological weaponry. The ingenuity of the Serpent Cult is so great that their venoms can even hurt spiritual and undead creatures.

Venomancy is available from a special faction building called the Venomancy Lab. A Serpent Cult hero visiting a Venomancy Lab can modify his/her creatures with new Venoms.
Note that the selected Venoms are hero-specific; a different hero may be outfitted with completely different Venom configurations.
Additionally, Venoms are equipped on creature types, not stacks, meaning that you cannot have a several stacks of the same creature with different Venoms.

All Venoms have a duration of 3 turns. Furthermore, Venoms can be detonated, see the Hero racial ability section for details.

Creatures that can be customized with Venoms are:
- Spitter Lizard
- Sandcrawler
- Fellviper
- Coatl
And their respective upgraded forms.

Fleshrot Venom
This venom causes rapid tissue necrosis as it spreads throughout the body, inflicting severe damage to the flesh of the victim.

Effect: Enemy is dealt damage at the start of its turn. Damage is dependant on the number of creatures in the stack that inflicted the Venom, and the tier of said creatures.
Damage = 1 * [number of creatures in stack * 1/3/5/10 (Basic, Advanced, Elite, Champion)]
Detonate Effect: Once detonated, all remaining damage is inflicted immediately and the creature is stunned from the pain, removing its Retaliation ability for the turn.

Drowner Venom
The Drowner Venom fills the victim's lungs with pus, making it very difficult to breathe. In the worst cases, the venom causes complete respiratory failure, immobilizing the victim. Regardless, the venom will drastically reduce the fitness of the victim, making sure that it doesn't run for help.

Effect: Enemy speed is reduced by -4 under the duration of the Venom.
Detonate Effect: Enemy is completely immobilized for the turn.

Mindblur Venom
A powerful Neurotoxin, the Mindblur inflicts damage to the victim's nervous system, making the use of more complicated abilities very hard to perform.

Effect: Enemy ability cooldown is increased by 1 turn during the duration of the Venom.
Detonate Effect: Enemy passive and active abilities are disabled for the turn.

Bonerattle Venom
The Bonerattle causes severe convulsions, forcing the victim to struggle to even stand. Needless to say, trying to mount any sort of offensive under such conditions is less than ideal.

Effect: Enemy attack is decreased during the duration of the Venom. The attack decrease is -1/-2/-3/-4 (Basic, Advanced, Elite, Champion tier).
Detonate Effect: Enemy Attack is reduced to zero for the turn.

Misteye Venom
This venom causes the victim's vision to fill up with a white mist, greatly diminishing their power of sight.

Effect: Enemy cannot choose creatures or tiles longer than 5 tiles away from it as the target for an attack or ability.
Detonate Effect: Enemy cannot choose any creature or tile other than itself as the target for an attack or ability.

Faithbreaker Venom
The Faithbreaker causes severe paranoia and distrust in the world to its victim. Named so for its effect of turning trusted soldiers against its commander, the Faithbreaker may break the morale of even the bravest foe.

Effect: Enemy Morale is decreased during the duration of the Venom. Morale decrease is -5/-10/-15/-20 (Basic, Advanced, Elite, Champion tier).
Detonate Effect: Enemy attacks the nearest allied unit if possible.

Aaaaaaand that's it for now. Hope ya enjoyed it.

This question is going to be totally deflating since it has almost nothing to do with your content, but what font did you use for, e.g., "basic abilities" and "upgraded abilities"?

Did you do the artwork yourself?

The font is Edwardian Script ITC Semi-Expanded.

The original artworks are not mine, but they've been photoshopped to hell and back to fit into my theme and presentation.

EDIT:

Instantly I feel like the Cobra Warrior's abilities are pretty boring. Will change that up soon.

I like it even better than the first one (sorry I don't have much to talk about, but yea: it's brimming with cool). I like the desert oasis terrain better than the original swamp-dwellers, maybe only because I feel there's been such a plethora of scaly swamp-towns created by people that I'm kind of exhausted with it, even if you did attempt to change it around by making it serpentine instead of more lizards. I like the sandcrawler a lot and the mythos surrounding the Snake God (was that story in the original town? I don't even).

It's not such a huge deal in later game if you have 8 or more of them in a big fight, but it would be an easy abuse for early game. Stick a Couatl up in the front; troll the creeps by absorbing a free hit, then run away. Worse yet: split em' up into 2 or 3 stacks, with each Couatl stack having equal trolling capabilities.

It's an easy fix though. Just put a cap on the # of times that it can absorb a hit with zero damage and/or change it so that it suffers zero damage if it's dealt less than X% of its HP total, rather than having to kill an entire Couatl. Something like that.

Yeah, the immunity to death ability is just a bit strong. Maybe it just prevents damage to the top creature in the stack, and then only to a certain %? Other than that... damn I wish I knew how to make pictures/ had some kind of quality paint program. It looks really good Ad. I like the faction. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

More like "Hello, I'm a MUTATED SNAKE-WOMAN!" but ok. Don't really care about being original just for the sake of being original, it has to be justified in other ways as well.

Adamantine Carapace could be altered perhaps, I didn't really think it would be a huge deal since you very rarely have an upgraded Champion unit in early game creeping.

@Gnomes: I use GIMP which is a free tool. Just download and rock on

And the faction is pretty much done, might add some unique skills and alter the abilities a bit but the major work is done.

Well ya see, the place where the Serpent Cult lives isn't really a vast, dead desert. It's more of a flourishing land of palmforests centered around the Grand Oasis, their capital.

Like this here.

Of course there are vast expanses of almost-dead desert as well, which are the homeland of the Fellvipers and Spitter Lizards, but the Coatl lives more in the oasis parts.

I don't see the point in befouler being hit and return unit. It doesn't seem to have the capabilities for doing so, lore wise.

Can the enemy see your burrowed fellviper?(the name doesn't make any sense on a desert creature btw.)

How strong are the pit vipers?

Loving the flash bite, excellent idea.
Snake charmer is great too. Can you mindcontrol the priestess though?

Yes, adamantine carapace is overpowered. Just imagine ice shield and stoneskin applied. You'll have 20 champions and they can't do any damage on them.
Not to mention late game battles near the end, you might have immortal champions and it would be a winner, though I assume hero attacks would be able to kill them?
If you'd make them weak defence wise, that would be interesting.

Detonation in conjuction with shooters and no retal units might be interesting. Divide your priestesses, kill everyone after wait, repeat. It's just that having detonation and area attack seems kinda counterproductive to begin with.
Could work in longer battles where you have a few priestesses left and more of the other units but not sure.

Oh btw, do the venoms stack?
What if you apply stronger venom on top of a weaker one?

I imagine Befoulers as a kinda hit & run unit that moves in and poisons the enemy and then moves out. I find Attack & Return fitting.

Yeah the enemy can see your burrowed Fellvipers. Originally I thought having them invisible was nice but it just becomes way too unbalanced considering how the Serpent Cult really benefits from stalling the enemy and letting the venom do its job.
Not sure why you find the name unfitting for a desert creature.

Just imagine Pit Vipers being perfectly balanced ^^. Ah ok eh... they're very weak with low damage but quite numerous, their venom is the main thing to watch out for.

Yup you can mindcontrol the priestess. Creatures have "traits" that I have not written down since most of them are so damn obvious, like "living" and "large creature" and "flying". "Serpent" is such a trait, which is shared by all beast creatures in the Serpent Cult, it is this  trait that Snake Charmer targets.

Adamantine Carapace will be altered yeah, will think of something else.

I think I agree... Burst Shot messes with the Serpentress' support focus... better to have some additional serpent support perhaps.

Yes, venoms from different stacks are stacked upon each other. However, if the same unit inflicts venom on an enemy again, the effect is simply refreshed.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

Nice picture, that makes me think of the Super Mario 3 and the desert world. Just waiting till the psychotic sun wipes your snakes out.

I meant that attack and return doesn't seem fit for a human. They don't quite seem to possess the ability to execute it. Human running in and running out seems kinda funny.

Ah no, Fell as in fierce, cruel, dreadful, savage.

The Cult does have these mutagens that enhance their bodies quite heavily... though Befoulers don't use mutagens that much so your argument is valid.

Will consider swapping it for something else that lets them avoid getting overwhelmed.

Okay, feedback on the creatures.
First of all, I love how everything looks - it really fits the theme - and I think I'll try to do something similar in the future.

Spitter Lizard

I'm not very fond of basing creatures on real world animals, but I like the idea of how the creature works. I think 5 abilities is to much for a Core creature. I would suggest to remove Venomous, as it less interesting than Corrosive. Spew could be changed to inflict Corrosive instead of Venomous.

Befouler

In a way it feels very boring because it feels like the old Dungeon Assassin got a baby with a Blood Maiden. The picture doesn't look like a lizard, but some generic rogue. Otherwise I think the mechanic of having them run back and forth on the battlefield to confuse enemies is interesting. It feels weird that Reposition is 35%, I think that it should be a static value like +2 speed.

Sandcrawler

I LOVE what this creature looks like.
I there are to many abilities. I would suggest removing either Adrenaline Burst or the Venom ability.

Cobra Warriors

At first, I thought it was lame to have human creatures in a Lizard faction but now I think its pretty cool. The ascendance to serpenthood thing etc. It looks boring and like a Core creature though. The Sandcrawler looks a lot cooler.

Sword Dance is going to be really overpowered if it doesn't have a cap at like 50% Defense. I love the synergy between Sword Dance and Blood Bond, and how Blood Bond can be exploited by enemies.
Defiant might be a little to powerful in combination with Sword Dance. Otherwise, its a pretty boring "I only exist to be annoying and never die!"-type of creature. I would consider replacing Defiant with something more interesting and strategic.

Fellviper

I'm a big fan of big worms and had a creature like this as the lvl 7 creature of my very first faction (it was called something silly like "Titanic Earthworm Elite"). I love Burrow and it just feels like an incredibly satisfying ability to use. I think its kinda lame that the faction has like three Venoms that are just improved versions of each other, but Combustion makes up for that.
Love it.

Serpentress

Again typical sexist creature. She's the only woman in the faction and has to be a caster. The carefully hidden and denied feminist inside me wants to yell at you. I LOVE Detonate though and suddenly I understand all the Venoms in this faction. It would be a perfect racial ability, venoms and detonating them.

Coatl

Okay, we all love Coatls but Adamantine Carapace needs to change because people like Elvin would abuse it till the end of time.
I think this is a very disappointing creature. Inspiring Prescense is a pointless ability with nearly ZERO strategic value.
The only thing it does is to spawn some snakes and fly around and intoxicate people.

So to summarize, I think this is a great faction. I'll admit that I never bothered to read about your original Serpent faction so I don't know how much that changed. The theme is very very cool and I love the Venoms and explosions, but it feels like it should be a racial ability because it takes a bit to much place imo.
Other things that could change:
- Human creatures look boring.
- A few creatures like the Spitter has to many abilities.
- The champion is very disappointing and its abilities should be reworked.

Now I hate you Adrius because I've got NO time at all to make a new faction now but you inspired me. >.>

Ok I think I agreed with pretty much nothing in your criticism besides the stuff about venom. Besides the stuff that I've already said that I'd fix, of course.

I shall look over the racial a bit... I can tell you that it's gone through MANY versions... I even had this weird system where each venom type had 3 substances that reacted with other venoms and created this extremely complex system of different effects.

Thanks for the theme praise btw... the most important thing for me in factions is atmosphere and coherence... stuff like that. I'm mostly interested in creating cultures... places you could imagine to live in.

Oh and I like using percentages in abilities cuz I have no idea how much of an impact "+2 speed" has for example, I'm not that knowledgable on balance.
