I like the visual style of FE - it has issues, but it's a fresh style that reminds me of classic 2D games. In a good way. The thing I dislike is color palette in some places. Cities and grasslands look ugly. Contrast is weird. On the bright side, I like various barren, lava and snow areas.

But reports from people in beta are mixed. Some like it, some say it's a mix of several subsystems that feel largely independent and don't fit together too much.

It is my impression that Warlock is a game that doesn't try to do many things at once. It is a game of military conquest. Magic is a bit limited and it's not too hard to end up in a situation where you can't use all your mana. A game of units, cities, upgrades, enchantments, summons. Fantasy General on steroids ? Warlock does fewer things but does them well. Neither subsystem is too deep - unit stats aren't particularly sophisticated, even MOM had more stats (HP, shields, resistance). Warlock only has HP. The same for wizard creation, cities, upgrades. On the plus side, cities supposedly require little micromanagement.

There are issues with Warlock. AI has some serious flaws making it easy to exploit if you know what you're doing. It's not fond of Dispel so you can stack your unit with positive enchantments. AI is not very good at responding to threats to its capitol. AI doesn't buff units as much as it could. Like in Master of Magic, a hex with a flying unit is completely impassable for a walking melee unit. You can put it in a city and AI will have big trouble conquering it.

Then there are balance issues. Some units are strictly better than others for the same cost. Fervus is an overpowered god, maybe Lunord. Ships are pretty weak, they can be swarmed by normal land units in boats or killed by one melee unit with Water Walking. You can summon a unit next to enemy archers and do a lot of damage out of the blue. These are easy to fix - as long as publisher/developer care and patches are released. We'll see.

I'm not against Fallen Enchantress. I hope the game turns out better than I expect. But so far, it's not very encouraging. If both games are good then we all win.

I'm playing my first game, on impossible difficulty with a custom mage. I chose to start with the +3 research perk and the 20% mana perk. For spells I chose lesser fireball and lesser heal. At this point in the game the +3research per turns is a small part of my research points but it helped early on.

Im playing on a large map, currently on turn 122. So far I've managed to avoid conflicts with the other great mages, although one of them has extorted me for a lot of gold and mana. Though he has not paid me a visit in a while.

I don't have much in the way of conventional forces. I have a mage in all my cities, a few clerics scattered around, and a few halberdiers. Oh, and some summoned earth elementals.

I've been concentrating on keeping my gold income and mana income good and research. I need to put up defensive towers in my border cities and build a few more melee units.

The game has been been fun and bug free for me. No crashes, no bugs. The big name guys could learn from this indie developer. Come to think of it, the Majesty rts strategy/simulation games were like that too.

Two new DLCs are out. One adds a new playable faction, the elves. The other adds artifact creation spells. Heroe units can use the artifacts. Artifacts can also be found in the game.

It'll be a little while before I play with the new DLCs. I'm concentrating on Orcs Must Die 2 at the moment.
