What I did like better, though, was the art direction.  There are some obvious holes, but on the whole it's clear that the artists for H6 were more skilled than the ones for H5.

I have to strongly disagree with you on this one Aosaw. The art team that worked on Heroes V consisted of really talented and experienced people (actually a lot more experienced and renowned that those who worked on Heroes VI). Of course, you have the full right to dislike the art direction that Ubisoft choose for the game (i.e. the Warcraftish look) but it has nothing to do with the artists who created the concepts and their skills.

SKPRIMUS, it seems we talk past each other, it seems.

I brought up the resource reduction as an example for a very simple change - that has a lot of consequences. You can't just "erase" three resources and that's it. The game changes accordingly. The pace gets different, building feels different, decisions switch focus ... buildings, in this case the Market, suddenly have no value anymore the way they are.
Changes, as simple as they may seem, will set chain reactions of other changes into motion - IF the necessity for that is seen. And that means that you will have a lot more work to do than you may think.
Here it is important to be able to change things fast, so your programming must be accordinly flexible and open, so that you can test many things...

Because they held the same role with Heroes 1-4 that Ubisoft holds with this one.

Do not mess yourselves, my dear fellows. Ubisoft is the right answer. Nivals or Black holes are merely someone else's gardeners (as somebody pointed out above). If a company such Bethesda, Blizzard or Triumph Studios have picked up the project in a due time, a different result cames out, that's for sure...

afaik BH had nothing to do with H6 art. The work on models were made buy 3 mages studio, so... BH's work was code.... Nival was better, BH did awful job.

If the terrible Art direction is entirely Black Hole's fault, then it's by far the worst.

Original doesn't necessarily mean better than generic. In this case, everything is grotesque, overly ornamental and just plain ugly in most case.

The Necropolis was the biggest shock for me. They went from some generic, But kind of classy Neo gothic style, to a putrid, decaying egypto-babylonian style. From classiness to grotesqueness.

I agree with your post, but AFAIK, H6's art were done by some random dude on deviantArt, contracted by Ubisoft.

Most detailed yes, best is highly debatable. The appeal of the H2 cartoonish and the H3 classic medieval style lies in their taste and simplicity. They did not desperately try to tell you they were awesome, they just were. While the H6 style is beautiful in its own way, I do not like the way it is overcompensating.

This one is the best in the series. Moreover, loading screens in the original "Heroes VI" are masterpieces.

They were that cheap ? o_0

It really seems this game was made on a shoestring budget.

It did had that actually ''generic'' Deviant art feeling. That of an amateur graphic artist that tried too hard to look outlandish (yet end up doing the same style of designs than most of his peers).

It is obviously subjective, but I personally dislike all of the art save for H5 (which was good save for the cartoonish part of it) and H6, which I find amazing.

Consider this; Most of the heroes have copy/paste armor, the artist was too lazy (or time-constrained) to come up with original designs for the Heroes (which led to the celebrity look-alike incident) and the town screens have obvious artistic flaws in regards to layouts and light sources.

The artist may or may not be an amateur with no past experience (deviantArt should not be used as an indicator here).
Judging by the art of H6, he (or she) is capable, but the art style is oh so generic.
