They had a war. People died. Buildings blew up. A lot of people have a grudge about it. If somebody pinned your sister down, ripped her clothes off, and raped her repeatedly followed by putting a lead capsule in her skull, you would probably be mildly irate about it also. Not everybody that knew her would necessarily react in an ideal fashion because they're upset and bitter and emotionally compromised.

I don't see which part is so hard for you to wrap your brain around. It's pretty basic and straightforward. Dead bodies = buzzkill. I know these concepts are right up there with astrophysics & stuff, but you should probably get a good handle on basic human behavior before you snag that ambassador job.

You'll neve. Understand that, Xerox, for you are from a normal place on our planet. You may get some of the hate thing if you read some history, but you'll know it only if you are from here. Bulgarians for example hate serbians, but if some other state do something bad to Serbia we transpher our hate to them. It happens during the US bombing there, and during the Kosovo problems. Bulgarians hate greek people also, but if only someone from the West, the East, The North or the South say something bad about them we are going to hate him instead them. It's the same with Romania. We also hate Turkey. Um... here we just hate them...

... but all started in history full of wars and represions. It's all thanks to the Great powers. That's it. Balkan people are playing the fools in the modern history after XIX century. The small and poor Balkan states were toys of Russia, Germany, UK, France, Austro-Hungary and etc. They made them enemies.

Pitty, all the Balkan nations are kin. Culturaly at least.

That's why I'm federalist. I support the idea of Balkan federation, just not the Tito type. This will never happen of cource.

so you hate everybody

have fun.

anyway I think its interesting that you said that greater powers had turn the balkan peoples against each other

I recently wrote about that in an essay that was about how greater powers would always try to divide people and create tension and conflict to control them. And how something like that is probably going to happen to Africa in the future.

these kind of romani that your ex-president mass-deported

The last deportation of gypsies deported by the Romanian Government, was in 1942 by General Antonescu, that was in the Second World War when Romania was allied with Germany. Our ex-president was Ion Iliescu,he finished his last mandate in 2004(since then Traian Basescu is president). If you think Romanians are so bad better make difference between Romania in 40's and Romania after 1989,a lot changed from that time. And accusing today Romania for deporting gypsies is like accusing America today for slavery, this belongs to the past.

Also there's no big hostility between Balkan Countries(at least between Romania and its neighbors). There's no war in Balkans today, even though not all Balkans countries recognize Kosovo's independence, but there's no f***ing war.I don't know why people still believe that there's still war in Balkans. The Real Balkan Wars were finished in 1913...

The last major one was the First World War. That's why it's time all the hate to be gone. But it's not. Plus Romania and Bulgaria seems to have pretty good relations and it seems the hate between the people is... gone at least a bit

Uh... more like several wars and they are not the reason but merely the consequence. Besides, if killing people, blowing stuff and occupying a territory during a single war was a reason for a long-standing hatred, the Germans should've become the most hated people in Europe by now.

The small difference is that Sweden, Norway and Denmark are rich countries while the Balkans are Europe's ghetto. Many of the local problems are far from resolved, the progress towards their resolution is painfully slow or completely absent and even though it is quite unlikely to see something like the war in Bosnia soon, it's a dormant volcano, not an extinct one. Don't get me wrong, it's not like the Balkan people want to kill each other on sight, I don't think that even "hate" is appropriate as most of the time they have no reason whatsoever to feel that way and they don't. History tells that it takes a major crisis combined with a lot of purposeful propaganda to turn the old grudges into an actual nationalistic urge to do nasty things at the expense of your neighbour - the thing is that it is naive to qualify such scenario as impossible. As long as the root issues remain, the possibility for bad things in the future also remain.

Quote:
Why do all the balkan countries hate each other?

Because over millennia of wars.
I’m from Bulgaria and I know what is the mood of the common Bulgarian about our neighbors.
The common Bulgarian hates mostly the Turks because their ruling over Bulgaria between 15th-19th century, the repressions, forcible changing of religion in some regions during that period and so on.
Second place in the hateful list takes Greece. The reasons are wars in the Middle Ages, the ruling between 11th-12th century, trying to be forced Greek language in churches in 18th and 19th century, Balkan wars (1st and 2nd), WW1, WW2, assimilation of Bulgarians in northern Greece in 20th century and so on.
Then comes Serbia mostly because some wars and taking Macedonia in 1913.
After Serbia comes Macedonia. The reason is they denied that they are Bulgarians and call themselves Macedonians. Bulgaria endured 3 national catastrophes between 1913-1944 in an attempt to take Macedonia. Also some thefts from our history.
Romania is the least hated nation. Even I think hate is very strong word here. We’ve had some conflicts with them but there isn’t such a “rich” war history against them like the others.

If we look at our neighbors we can see the same - Serbians hate Albanians because Kosovo, Bosnians, Croatians, Slovenians, Montenegrins because their separation from Yugoslavia and vise versa.
Greeks hates Turks because the ruling between 15th-19th century, Balkan wars, Cyprus and so on. Greeks also despise Bulgarians.
Macedonians hate Albanians and Bulgarians. Also Greeks because the Greeks don't recognize the name Republic of Macedonia but Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Turks despise all others because the grandeur of Ottoman Empire and domination over the Balkan Peninsula between 15th-20th century.

At the bottom of things are wars and territorial interests but the most hateful factor is the repressions over the locals when some country has taken new territory. Almost every nation in the Balkans has good and bad moments in the history. We have to put aside the cultural differences, war crimes and hatred and build up our economies because our economies (excluding Turkey) are not in good condition at all. As many as Balkan countries get in EU will be better. We have to trade each other, go vacations to the neighbor states, not to fear whether some nationalistic a$$ will beat or kill you. There’re many Bulgarians that go to vacations in Greece, Turkey, Montenegro, Croatia but I have to admit that I don’t want and fear to go (travel) in Albania, north-west Macedonia, Kosovo or Bosna. The Shiptars (that’s another name for the Albanians) in Kosovo and north-west Macedonia are armed with AK47, so those aren’t the pleasant places to go.

Quote:
I still don't get why everyone hates albania

Most of the nations despise them not hate them. They are the most undeveloped state among the others and I guess that is the reason of the contempt. As I said above Serbians hate them because Kosovo, Macedonians hate them because the problems in north-west Macedonia.

I think this thread should be moved in OSM

As Xerox skillfully pointed out, countries which have been ignored or 'demilitarised' have flourished under capitalism, almost certain that this is due to 'great powers' unfluence.

I don't at all buy these arguments about how there's a lot of prejudice between these states because of "a bunch of wars". Citing stuff from the 19th century and before? Rly? Who didn't have wars in the 19th century down to the Middle Ages? The Balkans doesn't have a single spittle of uniqueness with that. Prior to when weapons became outrageously devastating, there were major wars all the time. Wars were more fashionable than sunglasses.

People might bring up age-old **** in history whenever they're talking, but I'm really skeptical that age old stuff actually has that huge of an impact. It's more like, "I need to use a scapegoat so I can have an excuse for why I don't like this person." I mean yeah, even today the not-so-bright members among the British and French aren't known to be best buddies, but it's not exactly a burning hate. Not among most people imo. You need something fresh and relatively recent to really get those loins burning. Something that lots of people alive today experienced.

I don't think anybody here from the Balkans is old enough to give a solid response to this, but: do you think prejudice in 2010 was better or worse than it was in, say, 1995? (This is just a rhetorical question because I've already concluded what the answer is)

If you think balkan people are full of hate then think again after reading this groundskeeper Willie quote.

"Brothers and sisters are natural enemies, Like Englishmen and Scots, Welshmen and Scots, Or Japanese and Scots, Or Scots and Scots, Damn Scots, they ruined Scotland!"

Scots... Now there is a people full of hate (and awesome).
