small Heroes 3 challenge map: The Eight Lichs

I made a challenge map in which you start with 1 powerful necromancer hero (has all spells and many powerful artifacts to choose from) and 7 lichs and have to defeat many legions of enemies.  The map's goal is technically to flag the creature dwelling, but the real challenge is to defeat all the enemy monsters.  It is possible to defeat them all.  Can you do it?

Veterans should beat it easily, but it is definitely an interesting challenge for newer players.  I certainly had fun with it when I made it.

Here's the map file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35695760/The%20Eight%20Lichs.h3m

To play it, simply place the above-linked file in the "Maps" subfolder in your Heroes 3 folder, then load "The Eight Lichs" from the "New Game" -> "Single Scenario" -> "Show Available Scenarios" menu in the Heroes 3 menus.

I made this back in 2009, but never thought of actually releasing it to anyone until now.  I have done so now, so enjoy.

Hopefully hero had bag of gold, thus victory was likely.

What?  Did you try the map?  What you said doesn't really make sense in the context of this map.

To be clearer, you don't have a castle you can use.  You only get 1 hero with 7 Power Lichs and you have to defeat legions (the largest wild creature groups) of 7th-tier monsters (Ancient Behemoths, Ghost Dragons, Archangels, etc.) which surround your hero from the start.  Ideally, you'd know that just by loading the map, but I figured it would be best to just say this here for those who don't want to commit too much of their time without knowing enough about the challenge.

A tough challenge

I found a tactic vs slow creatures easily but arch angels were only problem I can't find a way to beat them... could you post a walkthrough please ?

Anyway the map is really short but although it is short, it would take 15-50 minutes to finish it. The design was beautiful and simple But it would have been better if the story had been more.

I would rate 7/10

Map

I like the idea of a hero with small army surrounded with all these legions of level 7 creatures.(In WOG you can surround him with 8th level )
What I dont like:this is M sized,so you win very quickly and you have many artefacts that dont matter at all(for example boots of speed, while not needed or the 2 bows that you can go without)

I suppose you can give him fewer artefacts and fewer spells, which will require player attention in order to win!

This is great!  Nobody has figured out how to defeat all the monsters yet!  Perhaps in a month if nobody has it figured out yet, I'll post a walkthrough.

My roommate managed to beat it without too much trouble and without hints, so I know it's possible for people other than me to do it.  The coolest thing is that he did it in a different way from how I did it, so there are multiple solutions.

If there weren't so many artifacts and spells, the map would become easier because the solutions would be more obvious.  Although I thank you for the suggestions, I'm not going to change the map at all from this point.  The challenge is set, now that I've seen someone other than myself beat it.

I agree that the story is lacking.  It would have been cooler if I could think of a better story.  I'm not very good at that sort of thing; integrating story and gameplay.

Uh, sorry? Map is super easy. Attack slow monsters first, implosion/berserk, then finally archangels with lyches split in xxx-1-1-1-1-1-1, mass slow, force field, done. This could have been a challenge 1 month after game release, not today.

Modesty is much cooler than your attitude.

I'm glad you managed to figure it out.  As you can see by the previous 2 replies, not everyone can do it so easily.    I also mentioned that veterans should be able to do it easily, so there's really no reason to act like that.

Nice map. For me, Slow plus Armageddon(with Blade) took care of the smaller Behe stack quite fast. Hydras were second and then main Archlich stack could one-hit-kill some enemy stacks. I wasn't always very careful and I used a total of 2088 mana in all battles(+4 for visions on both days). I guess that if you're a bit more careful, then it's possible to win on day 2 without using the Wizard's Well.

@heroes_player:
I think that the 2k AA and 3k AA are the only stacks that can't be defeated with just your starting army.

Of course you can win against the AA's with your starting army also. Salamandre already descibed it a bit. (just arrange your 7 lichs in a way, one lich is placed in the corner, and all other lichs are surrounding him, so the attacking AA's block themselves from attacking in the first round; normally, 4 lichs will die, afterwards, the remaining 3 stacks of AA's can't attack anymore becuase they are 2-hex creeps, and there is no place for them in front of the remaining lichs. Then cast slow and forcefield...cast some arma or berzerk or implo or whatever...repeat 226 times......done...)

The problem I have with those kind of maps is, all the fights work with nearly the same strategy. So if you (finally) found out about how to arrange your units in the tactics phase, so you survive the first round, everything else is peanuts.

The archangels are faster than all your creature stacks.  I don't see how that would work with only 7 stacks of 1 lich each.  Can you post a video demonstrating?

The hero doesn't have tactics, by the way.

Yeah, I don't think it's possible to beat the AAs with your starting army. They will be split in 7 stacks that always move before your Liches. Tactics would be necessary to beat them, but Necro doesn't have that skill. Armor of the Damned doesn't work, because the AAs move before it can cast its spells.

Every stack, except 2k AA and 3k AA, can be beaten with just your starting army and without touching other stacks first(perhaps somebody will prove me wrong on 2k AA). That includes 1k AA, Blacks and Ghosts.
To survive round one vs 1k AA, dismiss one of the Liches or put 2 Liches in top stack.

No tactics phase, so all you have to do is to use cloak to raise lyches with slow enemies and change to armor of the damned for AA. Place your big stack in first slot, even if hit twice, you will have enough lyches to finish the battle, using force field and teleport.

Last battle:

You know salamandER,  you don't really do much to try not to perpetuate the stereotype of the french.  And btw... Did you really have to take that relic off to show you only losing 6 skeletons as opposed to liches?  I know I'd be too lazy.

Also to add.  Sal I am sure there are veterans who could not figure this out that could beat ya one on one in a best of of five match.  So it really doesn't pay to have an arrogant attitude.
