Amen.

Edit: I've also downloaded a tiny mod to enable ranked fire for archers, doesn't really give them any obvious tactical edge, some claim it makes them worse, personally I just think it looks awesome (and slightly more accurate)

Update on games: Started playing as the Tokugawa, I established trade with everyone (about 5-6 families) but one by one they each declared war on me for some reason. I've had insanely huge battles, and I only managed to survive thanks to bribing smaller enemy armies <3 (here's an example)

My main objective however is to establish a christian state, then purge japan of pagans.

Okay, I forfeited my Tokugawa game, I managed to annihilate the Takeda and managed to defeat two full samurai Hojo armies, but hard pressed for cash and the Hojo, ikko ikki and Shimazu fleets constantly blockading my ports.

While my army was away a massive ikko ikki army attacked me from the west, defeatable with a lot of effort, but all hope was destroyed when the Shimazu landed 3 generals, 6 katana samurai, and the rest yari and bow samurai, they instantly sacked my capital.

Maybe I'm not cut out for legendary, I mean I can win battles well enough, but the savage onslaught of samurai armies and every faction randomly making me their enemy is a little brutal.

Might play as the Takeda or Hojo, or I might degrade myself enough to play mori or shimazu.

Edit: Three turns into my new game and the Tokugawa have been destroyed, with that in mind I think I did rather well.

Takeda have uncomfortable starting position and need to maintain peace with (preferably both) Imagawa and Hojo to be able to expand relatively safely northwards. Uesugi will attack you shortly after you become neighbours with them - which by the way makes sense historically - and the small clans to the west side of the map all have inferiority complex and overcome it by attacking you. On the other hand, the Takeda cavalry is second to none and the earliest accessible in the game too so victories even against clearly superior armies are quite achievable.

I decided to go with Shimazu, and was surprised to find that the first objective I get is to establish a namban trade port and import guns. (which is my objective I want to be a christian clan :3) I would've expected the shimazu to be hard core conservatives since they have master katana samurais.

Edit: O', my, god. You can manually control cannons, (optional) you have limited ammo, but you can achieve much greater ranges and accuarcy (depending on how good you are at coordination)

The rolling effect of the cannon-balls is sooo deliciously evil, I managed to hit a group of yari peasants and the ball rolled on and wiped out half of his general's bodyguard  (including the general)

So I was playing Medieval II, and the papal states, nourishing a deep hatred for me, decided to take my city, Marseille. Since this city was in the middle of my empire and the closest border was to my allies, I didn't expect an attack, and so the garrision was more or less only town militias, some crossbowmen and only a few stronger units I managed to get there in time, all in all, 800 brave units. This is the story of the commanding officer of that fight, Captain Henry.

"What was he thinking, that fool of a king!" Henry thought to himself. The last thing he had expected was a papal army in the middle of France, never had he even considered that they'd actually beseige Marseille, despite it being a key city. He stared out at the approaching armies from the walls above the gate. He estimated them to be about equal in numbers, though, he feared, they were at a great disadvantage both in equipment and experience.

The greater part of his army consisted of young men he'd found on the streets. He'd sent emissaries to the nearby castles and towns, so far only Toulouse had anwsered, and just the other night their armies had arrived; 200 strong men, the mere 200 of them could easily destroy the rest of his army. He knew more troops were on their way, but with the enemy at the gates there was no way they were going to get there in time, he was alone. He looked around himself, but there weren't many on the walls, only a few of his division and the only archers in their army, barely 100 men.

The enemy army was still advancing, as far as he could see, they were well prepared, battering rams and ladders for half the men, but the most terrifying of all was the huge tower on wheels they were dragging around, with that thing, his walls were worthless. Suddenly the enemy army stopped. They were too far away for the arrows to hit, it made no sense for them to wait there, their camp was a quarter of a days march from here, according to his trackers.

Then he saw movement, they brought forth some kind of machines from the back of their armies, something he'd never seen before, not in France, anyway. The machines made a cracking noise, so loud it reached the castle, then they moved. "Get of the walls!" He screamed to his men, before running to the exit. A loud boom! Just where he'd been standing mere seconds ago was a huge boulder, among what remained of the floor. Panic erupted among his men. "Quickly, off the walls!" By the time the second rock hit, the walls were empty, though not well-trained, he thought, his men were quick.

They all stood under the cover of the walls and waited, one loud boom followed by another. Then suddenly the walls infront of him crimpled to dust. The enemy army started advancing. A few minutes later, there was another hole on the other side of the gate. Henry quickly ordered the reinforcements from Toulouse to the fronts, and they quickly surrounded the holes, his men right behind them. Then they could only wait while the approaching horde drew closer, atleast the rocks had stopped falling.

After what felt like hours, the enemy was close enough for his archers to hit them, and he ordered them to unleash everything at them, it wasn't falling boulders, but an arrow to the right place could hurt just as much. The frontline of the enemy were spearmen adorned with strong armor and big shields. Volley after volley fell on them, but only a few bodies remained in the dust.

"Get ready, men!" Henry shouted around him. "I don't care if the enemy is the Pope, if our king decided to question him, we musn't question our king!" He looked around him, all he saw was worried faces, most turned towards the enemy ahead, some to the houses behind them were their families were hidden, but some were looking to him, he musn't fail them, he had to show courage.
"We're not only doing this for France, men, nor are we doing this for glory, we're doing it to protect our loved ones!" He got the attention of all who could hear.
"If you die here, your family dies! Don't do this for France, or even for Marseille, do it for your wives and children!" Henry looked around himself and now, mixed with the fear among his men there was determination, they wouldn't fail him. But what if he failed them? Even though he tried to be reassuring, he was frightened. No matter now, the enemy drew closer, soon, there would be no time for fear.

The first clash of swords echoed loudly amongst the armies, both fronts were assaulted with swords and spears. He wasn't in the frontlines, so he could see most of the battle. While the experienced men from Toulouse held off bravely, they were pushed back, behind the walls.
"Support the flanks!" he shouted, and heard the order be repeated elsewhere. His armies quickly formed a bubble around both holes. Even though the Toulousians were pushed back, the Papal soldiers were only greeted with more spears when they entered the walls, the men were doing good.

For a while, Henry had hope that they would be able to hold them back, but for every man they slew, one more was there to take his place. And for every moment that passed, his armies were pushed back further. The bubbles grew, and the rows of loyal french men grew thinner. Soon the enemies reached Henry, and he could no longer command, but had to focus on he enemies directly in front of him. After he managed to kill enough to breathe a bit, he noticed just how far the papals had pushed them. The two bubbles of enemies had grew to one big one, in the middle of which were the cornered soldiers who had defended there, none of them would make it out alive. Henry started to panic, he wasn't ready for this. He took a quick look around, and noticed how few of his men were left.

"Back! All of you! Retreat to the courtyard!"

With the rest of his men, he initiated a tactical retreat into the empty roads of the city, quickly making their way to the courtyard. The invaders had fallen behind a bit, seemingly confused, maybe their general had fallen, Henry sure hoped so, not that it would matter much. He ordered his men for form a line infront of the Castle gate, with the remaining archers behind them. He looked at his men, barely a hundred, most of them injured. He looked towards the gate, thankful he didn't see any smoke, perhaps the invaders meant to keep the townsfolk alive. He noticed the papal armies starting to make their way around the corner of the courtyard, it wouldn't be long now.

"Listen, men." The men turned towards him. "I'm sorry it had to end this way, I really am." He paused, the men weary. After a while he continued: "This will be our last stand, but it wasn't in vain. We fought bravely, all of us. We've killed atleast half of them! Now there's not much hope left, there's a lot more of them than there are of us. Will you join me in this final battle?" His men cheered. Henry had never been very good on speeches, nor did he know most of the men, but he was proud of every single one of them, he smiled. "Remember, even though it's the pope we're fighting, all of you did what you believed right, surely, God will recognise that!" The enemy weren't far away now. In a few seconds, it would all end. Just as the armies clashed, he screamed "VIVE LA FRANCE!"

His archers positioned on the stairs of the castle, his men in a half-circle around them, they held out long. Each one bringing down atleast one soldier with him. Henry fought with a fire he hadn't known for years, then suddenly he went numb. He looked down. Blood. A man had stabbed him in the gut, then a blinding pain and he was on the floor. The invaders trampled him as they slew the rest of his men. Henry, barely alive, could only watch. Curse that king, why did he had to upset the pope, he should have known better. If not for him, these men wouldn't have had to die. No matter, it was too late for that. Henry was glad they had endured as long as they did and hoped the other armies would be here soon to avenge him, to avenge his men, to avenge Marseille. Henry closed his eyes. "J'en y va, mon roi.."

I have never tried this series but am interested to see if there will be a Total War: Warhammer game.

If that is the case, what would be a good entry point into the Total War series?

I've always found the earlier total wars to be a little cumbersome.
The Shogun 2 is also kinda boring because of the small campaign.

So I'd say either Medieval 2 or Rome, depending on what age you prefer.

Shogun is a great game, but there's only one real faction, and every other clan is just copied units with different colour.

Rome offers near completely unique units per faction, it's simple and greatly enjoyable, the graphics aren't bad either, and the distinct tactics required to master each faction is welcome.

Medieval II is just, !!!! One of the best game I've ever played, the factions share many of the units, but they have unique branches, a very enjoyable game. (mongol and timruid invasions are also wubbly)

There's also tonns of mods for each game, but I too recommend either one.

Medieval 2 is the only one I've played in the series, but it's awesome, atleast the vanilla. It's amazingly smooth for what it does.

Also, the turn after Henry's stand at Marseille, the Pope AND my king died, the pope of age and my king of the plague, and I got reconsiled, it's no longer possible for me to avenge my fallen.

No, this must be done carefully. I shall amass an army this land has never known! Then, when they all consider me their ally, I shall march on Rome with a force so great, the city will never be the same again, then the pope, and all catholic nations shall know of the true glory of france! (And then I take over Jerusalem, move my king their and slowly but surely convert the king of France into Islam).

Bah, Medieval II is just a mod for Rome - essentially almost nothing new. The two titles that advanced the series are Rome and Empire. I expect Rome II to be the third major game in this line.
On the other hand, I miss the chess-like strategy map style of the first Shogun and Medieval.

Even though I hate the Skaven (due to Greyseer Thanquil being a royal pain), I really want to see them implemented in a modern game.

Currently playing Shogun again, only about 4 turns in on the hardest difficulty.

My first battle was evenly matched 800 vs 800 (i believe) however using the special hattori ability I managed to place my army on consistent high ground (which reached just next to the enemy army) this gave my archers great range and with ranked-fire resulted in only 91 casualties, while the enemy sustained 400. (a little more than that)

I have a good feeling about this game, my previous two Hattori games were utter failures as the Ikko Ichi and Oda with their legions of never ending men kept invading. This time around I keep trade routes open but I do not ally to weak one city clans on the border of these two prime clans.

Edit: Oh lol, Around turn 25 I get a message from a source in a friendly clan that they intend to take advantage of me being at war. I even saw them gathering at the border foolishly might I add, as a welcoming gift I put a katana in both his general's (one was Daiymo) throats and with the third ninja I crippled his army (does **** all damage but it stops them moving for a season) cost me 1500, but I think he got the message.

Also I arranged a marriage between myself and the aforementioned backstabbers, they had a 14yr old girl and I had a 14 year old heir, I thought the match was pretty cute <3 Unfortunately for some reason she was wed to my 45 year old Commissioner for Finance.

I spear-headed Empire total war recently, (watching the Sharpe series to accompany my latest phase/fetish) I gave the Austrians a go (hardest difficulty ofc) that didn't end well at all, though I was pretty green in the game.

Now I'm playing as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, my first game I went for cannons and line infantry mass, only later did I find out that Polish fair rather poorly against Prussian or Austrian guns and discipline, but I didn't see an alternative. I won the battles through superior numbers, but I still ended up losing relatively the same amount of men and my tactics were pretty rigid too. (just line my men up and let 'em fight it out)

In my second start/game was an absolute blast, I heavily invested in tech acquisition through schools/colleges/universities and also stealing or through diplomacy, also I began do use dragoons pretty early on just cause I loved their uniform, other than that I thought that they were crap, (at first of course) I mean, mounted line infantry? Seriously?! However I began to experiment with them, and they give such a great amount of mobility that I've been seriously lacking, and their versatility just makes them godlike in the right hands and situation. Also started experimenting with grenadiers but have yet to use them for a decisive effect. Once I was producing winged hussars and had ranked fire ability unlocked few could stand in my way, unfortunately I didn't continue this game beyond this point for I downloaded a mod called 'European Wars' and I felt this required a fresh game.

The game is pretty damn hard, partly due to AI, but I can work around that, main problem is that town garrisons can be 2000+ men (not including troops stationed within) which meant that I couldn't take the strategic port in the Crimea plus the Ottomans massed over 10k men at my southern border while the Prussians have been constantly invading Eastern Prussia with 2-3k men at a time with 7k men in reserve (meaning a counter-attack is near impossible, unless I try to bypass them and hope that their heartland is undefended)

Though...Nothing I hate more than retarded soldiers that ignore orders, "Do not ****ing engage their heavy cavalry but outrun them you morons cause yer light cavalry" Horses walk at snails pace when I ordered them to run and end up getting rammed in the ass...

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Edit 24th June:

Okay, the Prussians are a ****ing nightmare to fight, their relentless onslaught has brought me on the verge of ruin, no idea how I managed to repel them for so long. While my northern army has been dodging the Prussians I've been trying to train a decent general in the south who commanded my provisional army of light troops with winged hussar support against the ottomans, after several skirmishes into enemy territory (Serbia and Albania) I finally won a decisive victory over the Turks at Moldovia, after which they signed a peace treaty which freed my provisional army to head north and push the Prussians back.

In the north Warsaw got attacked by 5000men, being under-garrisoned I had to withdraw my whole army from East Prussia (leaving a small garrison of 600men, with 2000 militia support) in order to save the city, which I did with relatively small losses since their cannons were poorly positioned, and my winged hussars utterly overwhelmed their left flank and their horseman. Meanwhile East Prussia came under attack by an army of 8900 Prussians, my defenders being under-armed and outgunned put up a heroic fight, we beat them off the walls, but I wasn't lookin and I miss-clicked one of my battalions to move outside the walls (which opened the gate) at which point their entire army went for the gates trying to pour inside. I posted what was left of the militia with 200 grenadiers to hold the gate, while from above I rained bombs and cannon shells unto the mass of men crowded outside the gates. (one of my grenadiers had 821kills at the end ) It was an utter slaughter, that lasted for 40minuites at which point the battle was won, the enemy suffering 3000+ deaths while I lost most of my militia and half of my regulars. Next turn Prussia sued for peace.
