"This is America. People do whatever the **** they feel like doing, you got a problem with that? Because they have a right to. And because they have guns and no one can ******* stop them. As a result, this country has one of the worst economies in the world. When it gets down to it-talking balances here-once we've brain-drained all our technology into other countries, once things have evened out, they're making cars in Bolivia and microwave ovens in Tadzhikistan and selling them here-once ouredge in natural resources has been made irrelevant by giant Hong Kong ships and dirigibles that can ship North Dakota all the way to New Zealand for a nickel-once the Invisible Hand has taken all those historical inequitiesand smeared them into a broad global layer of what a pakistani brickmaker would consider to be prosperity-y'know what?

From "Don Huan DeMarco":

Every woman is a mystery to be solved.

No woman has ever left my arms unsatisfied.

Women react to me the way that they do, Don Octavio, because they sense that I search out the beauty that dwells within until it overwhelms everything else. And then they cannot avoid their desire, to release that beauty and envelope me in it.

Have you ever loved a woman until milk leaked from her as though she had just given birth to love itself, and now must feed it or burst? Have you ever tasted a woman until she believed that she could be satisfied only by consuming the tongue that had devoured her? Have you ever loved a woman so completely that the sound of your voice in her ear could cause her body to shudder and explode with such intense pleasure that only weeping could bring her full release?

There are only four questions of value in life, Don Octavio.
What is sacred?
Of what is the spirit made?
What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for?
The answer to each is the same: only love.

From "Casanova":

Be the flame - not the moth.

Eternal damnation for one night with Casanova.

Give me a man who is man enough to give himself just to the woman who is worth him. If that woman were me I would love him alone and forever.

Ayn Rand explains reasons and emotions well:
"Reason is man's tool of knowledge, the faculty that enables him to perceive the facts of reality. To act rationally means to act in accordance with the facts of reality. Emotions are not tools of cognition. What you feel tells you nothing about the facts; it merely tells you something about your estimate of the facts. Emotions are the result of your value judgments; they are caused by your basic premises, which you may hold consciously or subconsciously, which may be right or wrong...

[One should not ignore emotions.] One should merely keep them in their place. An emotion is an automatic response, an automatic effect of man's value premises. An effect, not a cause. There is no necessary clash, no dichotomy between man's reason and his emotions -- provided he observes their proper relationship. A rational man knows -- or makes it a point to discover -- the source of his emotions, the basic premises from which they come; if his premises are wrong, he corrects them. He never acts on emotions for which he cannot account, the meaning of which he does not understand. In appraising a situation, he knows why he reacts as he does and whether he is right. He has no inner conflicts, his mind and his emotions are integrated, his consciousness is in perfect harmony. His emotions are not his enemies, they are his means of enjoying life. But they are not his guide; the guide is his mind."

"I would like to verify the witness's statement. For years now a growing number of my constituents have been of Italian decent -- and I have come to know them well. They have honored me with their support and with their friendship. Indeed I can proudly say some of my very best friends are Italian-Americans. However, Mr. CHAIRMAN, at this time very unfortunately I have to leave these proceedings in order to preside over a very important meeting of my own committee. But before I leave I do want to say this. These hearings on the Mafia are in no way what-so-ever a slur upon the great Italian people. Because I can state from my own knowledge and experience -- that Italian-Americans are among the most loyal -- most law-abiding -- patriotic, hard working American citizens in this land. And it would be a shame, Mr. CHAIRMAN ,if we allowed a few rotten apples to bring a bad name to the whole barrel. Because from the time of the great Christopher Columbus up through the time of Enrico Fermi right up to the present day -- Italian-Americans have been pioneers in building and defending our great nation. They are the soil o' the earth and one of the backbones of this country."

"You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'"

George Bernhard Shaw lets the DEVIL say this to Eve in Back to Methuselah. And Edward Kennedy said the same thing: in his eulogy for the assassinated Robert Kennedy he said, Robert had often said that to people he knew...
Pretty interesting - and a killer thing to say, I think.

Some say the most important significance (as in difference from others) of Western literature is the quality of the villain. I guess if there's one thing to thank to the Christians for, it's the charismatic bad guy.

Shaw was definitely not a Christian, more like an atheist, yet not without belief.
I don't think, we have to thank Christians for the charismatic qualities of the bad guys. That's too immoral, because you have to paint sinning attractive.

I know Shaw himself was not probably religious. He was a Fabian and it's very unlikely for a socialist in early 20th century to be so. But he came from a tradition of storytelling in which the bad guy is cunning not horrid. Historically, that has a lot to do with the Christian theology where both good and bad are in you and the trick is to choose. In Islamic theology the bad is not in you, it's Satan's tyranny on you. The Eastern cultures have their own, very rich story traditions but they would never produce a character such as Doctor Faustus for instance. A villain could be in the service of Satan but the protagonist would never consider making a deal with him.

Good point - the necessity to "pick" with the Christians, I mean. The pick must not be too trivial, otherwise only the most desperate people will fall for the obviously horrid choice. Therefore evil has to be "cunning" to be able to "tempt".

Yes, agreed.

In the hopes of clearing my family name -- and in the sincere desire to give my children the fare share of the American way of life, without a blemish on their name and background -- I have appeared before this committee and given it all the cooperation in my power. I find it a great dishonor for me personally to have to deny that I am a criminal. I wish to have the following noted for the record. That I served my country faithfully and honorably in World War two and -- was awarded the Navy Cross for action in defense of my country. That I have never been arrested or indicted for any crime what-so-ever. That no proof linking me to any criminal conspiracy whether it is called "Mafia" or "Cosa Nostra" or whatever other name you wish to give has ever been made public. I have not taken refuge behind the 5th amendment as it was my right to do. I challenge this committee -- to produce any witness or evidence against me. And if it do not -- I hope they will have the decency to clear my name with the same publicity with which they have now besmirched it.
