Magic: The Gathering with great AI (free fantasy TBS)

Hey

I've seen Magic: The Gathering is very popular here. It took one person 2 years, but now there's a freeware program for playing M:tG against computer opponent. Yes, this has been done before, but never so well.

The AI does make occasional mistake, notably sometimes it starts a fight it cannot win, doesn't save enough mana for activated abilities, or doesn't value creatures with long-term benefits (like +1/+1 when it hits a creature) enough. In all other aspects it behaves like a proper snow and I guarantee it will give you a challenge. It attacks and blocks very efficiently, uses instants in combat, juggles equipment, and always hits where it hurts the most.

If you haven't played M:tG before, you should care because it's an unique fantasy TBS games. It's a card game with great variety of mechanics, and thousands of cards with artwork ranging from good to amazing. It offers extreme customization of your "army", and indeed deck construction is one of greatest joys of this game. Wild combos, extremely powerful spells, endless hordes, or shutting your opponent's options down - you name it.

It runs on Linux, OS X, Windows.
When you launch the application, the first thing you should do is Arena>Download images>OK. It should just work. Prepare some tea.

My first impression with the AI is not so great - it often makes poor attacking decisions, sending 2/3s into my first-striking 3/3 again and again. Still, this is pretty nifty and hopefully the higher AI settings don't make such mistakes.

Why not use the max AI settings ? AI doesn't cheat, at least not the default algorithm. You can select an algorithm and ones that cheat are clearly labeled as such.

It's by far the best AI I've seen in M:tG.

There are many custom decks to load. I've just tried the one named Soul Sisters. It feels like masturbation ! Try it and you'll see what I mean.

Thus far I'm a fan of the randomly composed decks. I like not knowing what's gonna come up and playing with cards I normally would never give a second look.

EDIT: So I've been enjoying the game despite the AI making some questionable attack decisions even at max difficulty. However, I just ran into an issue: multiblocking does not follow actual MtG rules - the defending player chooses the order of blocks and not the attacker, giving the former an advantage that's not part of the real game. I hope this gets fixed eventually.

Cool thanks for posting this and to whomever made it.  It seems to be a really great way to play MTG.

Couple things to note, I believe I am playing on toughest difficulty without "cheat" which is "Vegas".

I was playing a U/B/W random deck vs a R/G/U and beat the comp 6/7 times.  Problem is I believe the win rate really should have been around only 3/7.  The computer wasted "Slaughter Cry" quite a few times, gives +3 Power + First strike, on it's OWN turn and then didn't even attack?!

Same game it would activate "Kessig Wolf"'s 3/1 pay R1 gains first strike till end of turn, on it's own turn again and not attack, and having used it's mana not have it for when I would swing in the next turn.

Also it would attach an equip that gave flying on to a "Reach" spider, thereby giving up the oppurtunity to be able to double block and take down my 5/5 Flying, Vigilance angel.

Quite often it does not wait to take advantage of "Bloodthirst" or "Morbid" abilities thereby way under utilizing cards.

I am not sure if others suffer from the pet peeve I have of hating to WIN a game I really should have lost, if they had played just a tiny bit smarter.  It makes the victory seem kind of hollow since I know I should have lost.

Anyway thanks for this game I enjoy it quite a bit since  I rarely get out to play anymore due to scheduling conflicts.  Not to mention most of my friends have moved away from playing it.
