Well, since I can grow insane by failing my dice once against that beasty (which we must stop returning to the cup). I'm staying away from it.

Also, thanks for taking time to explain. I somehow didn't know that closing portals stops the big fatty from appearing.

No problem.  If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask.  The game can be pretty complex.

While it's a drag you can't fight Azatoth, some Ancient Ones are downright ruthless.   One attacks by forcing players to discard allies.  If you do not have any allies, the investigators have to pick another investigator to be devoured.  One actually takes twice as many successes to remove a doom token (which would be 12 in our case).  Another has to be defeated twice.  The worst of the lot just flat out devours players every turn.

More on gates:

If 6 gates are open when there are 6 players, the Ancient One awakens.  You will need to explore the gates and close/seal them.

Conversely, if 6 gates are sealed (which results in a doom token being turned to a seal token), you win.

Are there clues on some locations before the game starts, and do you automatically pick them up by entering there? When can I for example give an item to another player?

Alright some further clarity would be nice before I post my stats:

Mythos Card - Monster movement
1. I'm assuming that move in black/white direction is tied to the arrows that are on many of the fields right?
2. Monsters that don't have a crescent or a plus sign don't move?
3. What do the other symbols mean? Hexagon, "/", Triangle, etc.
Do they serve any purpose beyond the "if you seal the Triangle portal all triangle monsters disappear" ?

Monsters
Terror
How do we know which shops close at what terror level? Maybe I missed it but there doesn't seem to be anything indicating it on the board.
EDIT: Wait is it the red and green rhombus symbol? I assume the shops with red close at a terror mark of 9? What happens at 3 and 6?

Fighting.
1. What's the benefit from fighting monsters? I understand that it decreases the terror bar which is a good thing but there is talk of "trophies" and we can use them to get nice loot but is there any benefit to fighting strong monsters? Or is the reward always "1 monster trophy"? And if it isn't how do we know which benefits we get from killing what monster?

2. I'm assuming we can't fight monsters together. Always 1v1 Samurai style?

Other Worlds
Am I correct in assuming that a portal is not explored by further movement with whatever realm you land in (as in there being a board for each portal), but rather by completing the three phases?
I'm not entirely clear on what happens though. You enter the portal and draw an encounter card. You do as it says. Then the part I don't understand: "The next turn, you move to the second turn and have an encounter." you have another encounter? A new encounter card is pulled? The encounter means the encounter you pulled in turn 1? What? Sorry I don't get it.

Also which stat modifier is the number on the portal? Horror check?

Investigator
Since I start at the general goods store does my unique ability apply to the "pick 3 item cards"? If yes does that mean I can buy 2 items or I just get 4 instead of 3 cards to choose from?

Item Trade
As much as I would like to use the Necronomicon for myself it seems like a stupid idea since I'd get 2 chances max to roll a 6/5 with either 0 lore/4 luck or 3 lore/1 luck. Right?
So how do i get this item to Gnomes or Alkar  (Maybe not Minnion since he already has so many spells that cost sanity)? They seem to be way better candidates for that one.

Gameplay
Clues. I understand how they appear but not how you collect them.
1. Do you collect it upon moving to where it has appeared or do you move there and then spend an additional movement point to get it?
2. If somebody arrives at the clue before you do, will you still get a clue when you arrive?

Shops/Tradeoffs
There always seem to be two symbols on fields where you can spend or get money. One is a dollar sign either in black or in the corresponding field colour and the second sign seems to be whatever you are buying (gun=weapon, heart=stamina, brain=sanity, magnifying glass=clue?, book=???)? "River Docks" seem to screw that theory over though.
What's up with the small signs being either black or in the field colour? It doesn't seem to simply be aesthetic since "General Store" and "Black Cave" have different gun symbols despite being the same colour field.

Sorry for the many questions but this looks like a lot of fun and I don't want to be the sheep that doesn't get it .

I'm at work right now and I have 6 appointments, so I will have to answer your questions later, Azagal.

As to clues, you pick them up upon entering an area.

@Dagoth.  Since Alkar is going to the Unnamable, you may want to go somewhere else.

I can answer few ones me thinks, the rest are good ones (I have only played this game 2 times )

The terror marks are color coded to an area, for example at terror level 3 the shop at purple area (general store) is closed.

The red and green rhombus symbols indicate if the area is stable or not -> red areas are unstable. Meaning that gates and monsters (but also clues) appear there more often.

The monsters have different toughness and it is indicated by how many "drops of blood" the monster has on it. Basically they are the monsters hit points. Monsters are worth in trophy as much as their toughness. Killing them is beneficial, with 5 worth of toughness points you get a lot of goodies from different locations in Arkham, and with 10 you can even get an ally (yay!)

The Other Worlds locations can be seen on the right side of the board, and you character moves to one of those when stepping into a gate/portal. Each world is separated in 2 sections, so if you pass the 1st (lower) encouter you move to the second as shown by a red arrow, and only by passing that one too, you can close or seal the gate.

Hmm yeah if no one else wants the Necronomicon I can take it, but I have only 5 sanity so it will take time before I'll play it... I guess others have more use for it. Btw your healing stone is amazing

Further clarification:

Unless you specifically fight a monster on the board, you don't need to say you will fight using item X.

When you do fight a monster or one appears (A wild Dark Young appears!... Sorry, I've wanted to write that for awhile), then you will say what items you want to use in combat.

Once everyone has said where they are going, I will then randomly draw encounter cards and type up what each says for your specific location.  Then you will act.  For example:  A card says you can search for a treasure at a Lore(-2) check.  I will make the roll on my end and apply the result.  If you have an option (as in MAY) you indicate if you want to take the chance and I will apply the result.

Awesome.  I see everyone has moved.

When I get home from work, I will update the game.

@Azagal.

Minion did a great job of answering most of the questions, but I'll fill in some blanks.
============================================

Mythos Card - Monster movement
The symbols that appear on black/white move that turn.  If a monster has a  "/" symbol and the card shows a "/" symbol, then that card move in the direction the arrow points.  Some monsters are fast and move two spaces.  They have a red border.  Others fly and go to the Sky box, to swoop down on investigators later.  Yellow bordered monsters do not move.  Black Borders move normally.  I have to get back to you on green.

Monsters and the Terror level - In Arkahm Horror, there can only be so many monsters on the board at once.  For 6 players, there can only be 9 on the board.  When there are more, those monsters travel to the outskirts.  In a 6 player game, if there are more than 2 monsters in the outskirts, then every monster in the outskirts is thrown back in the cup and the terror track raises by 1.  As minion stated, the rising terror track closes shops.  General Store closes at 3, Curiositie Shope at 6, and Magic Shop at 9.  There are some cards that can reduce the terror level and one invetigator has a power to lower it, but we are not playing with him at the moment.

You want to fight monsters to keep their numbers down.  Additionally, some places will let you trade monster trophies or X amount of Monster Toughness for various items.  Furthermore, some Ancient Ones require monster trophies to consume.  If you don't have any, you can often end up dead.

Other Words
In the Other World, upon first entering, you stay in the first part and have an encounter.  The next turn, you move to the second part and have an encounter.  On the third turn, you leave and the portal is considered explored.

Portal
The number next to the portal is Lore or Fight check you make to close the portal.

Investigator
For your character, you draw 4, pick 1 to buy.

Item Trade
Trades are fine.  You need to be in the same area to do so, however.

Clues
Clues are picked up by whoever enters the area.  Clues are used to seal portals and make rerolls.

Shops
Don't worry about the symbols.

Hopefully that answered most of it.
