Mat took his ale and hardtack, slightly miffed that the brew was so hard and the bread so stale. For all of his grumblings about noble food, the Prince of Ravens had grown rather fond of being able to swallow what he was chewing on without ten minutes of work going into each bite. As he listened to his "Companions," young master Cauthon drew some conclusions. Either he was the only one who had woken up in the body he had been born in, or the others had gone stark raving mad. If the second, much more likely option, was true, then Mat and his companions had been sent to this land by some design of the Dark One. His luck had seemed to protect him from that sort of thing before, burn it he sometimes had joked that he was luckier than the Creator himself, but the unkamer of the world's hand was becoming longer and more powerful as Tarmon Gaidon drew closer...

The thought sent a shiver down his spine.

Mat decided that he might as well get to know some of the natives to this place, so he turned to a crew member and introduced himself as he popped the last of his unchewable bread in his mouth and placed his hat, and it was a bloody good hat, on his head. "Names Mat Cauthon. Glad to meet you out here, friend."

Tristan sat on the deck of the ship; eating the food he was given. He had waited for the others to do so, in case there was something negative that would occur from doing such. Nothing did, so he had hope that it might be safe.

The strange sound of his voice still worried him. That, plus the comment one of the others made about having another body. Did he have another body too? With the new voice, he kind of assumed so. Would this body count as being a star? He wasn’t sure, and he didn’t want to try anything that might show he might be one. A witch could be nearby and…

“A wi…,” Tristan said to himself, though cutting himself off, not wanting to alert any possible witches around him that he may be on to them.

Which one of them could be a witch, though? One of the ones he was floating around in the water with? Perhaps, though it didn’t appear to be certain ones. Maybe it was one of the fairy tale creatures on this ship. They were conveniently sailing around this part of the water that this group of ‘sea food’ was floating around in. They didn’t seem the sort, but witches could be tricky.

He’d trust them, for now.

Tristan stood up again, and started roaming the ship, looking to the sky mostly. He kept wishing that Yvaine would be up there, somewhere, but she wasn’t. His thoughts went to back when he and she had first met. He, pretty well just an immature boy, and her a fallen star. Now he was the fallen star. A fallen star, with a change. He could now feel as she felt. If she could only see him now, she might laugh. He laughed at the thought.

“Oh, Yvaine, I think I have just surpassed your most horrific experience.”

Most of what Fandral picks up from the crew is related to the refugees' arrival, and easily ignored: a mix of curiosity over the foreigners, some disbelief at the wild tales being told, amusement that they'd managed to sink their ship on a calm sea, and one crew member expressing thankfulness for something interesting happening in what had so far been a long, boring voyage. (The last is hastily shushed by his companion, who mutters about bad luck with a wary look around the ship.) But there's a little chatter about the upcoming port-of-call as well, and from this Fandral learns that Emerald Island is small, isolated, and probably wouldn't be the ship's destination at all if not for some weird contest held by some Erathian Duke.

Fortunately for Rincewind his conversational companion looks more amused by the hasty backpedaling than offended. "Right now we're sailing off the coast of AvLee, more or less. I've never been to Ankh-Morpork, what country is it in?"

"Last elves?" the Dark Elf with the good clothes actually looks surprised. "I'd almost say that had to be our 'cousins' in Vori, but I've never heard of them claiming they were the last elves, only that they were 'pure.' And they never leave their homeland as a rule, so no one would believe them in any case."

The crew member takes Mat's hand and shakes it. "Trelmer Greencreek. Glad to run across you; it's bad for trade to let good people drown. Bad luck too. And while I bet it's been a little rough on your people, I can't complain about having a little excitement. No pirates or seamonsters at all this trip, and everything I've heard about Emerald Island makes it sound very dull." A quick glance establishes the presence of a bow on his back and a sword on his hip, and he's wearing a light suit of chainmail—presumably a warrior of some kind. "Maybe the contest will provide some excitement, but I'd rather have a good sized port town myself."

“Oh, Yvaine, I think I have just surpassed your most horrific experience.”

Nearby, one of the furry members of the crew pipes up in a chittering voice, "Sign of madness, talking to yourself. You mad?"

"Pleasure to meet you as well." Mat could tell that he would like this man.

"Bad luck too."

"Good thing you picked me up then, I may just be the luckiest man alive." Mat winked at him mischievously, "Never lost a game of chance that I didn't want to lose." That was the only perk Mat could see to being a taveren, bending fate around you was good and all, but it always seemed that it just landed him in trouble and that Mat always had to fight for his life because of it...

"No pirates or seamonsters at all this trip, and everything I've heard about Emerald Island makes it sound very dull."

Mat kept his face passive and nodded as inside his head he decided that this man was a mad glory seeker. Not bad people, on the whole, but Mat did not want to be on himself, and they attracted trouble like a tavern attracted drunks. The last thing Mat wanted was more trouble. "Hopefully the rest of the journey will continue to be as calm. I've had enough excitement to last me a while..."

"Maybe the contest will provide some excitement, but I'd rather have a good sized port town myself."

Sailors and their port towns. Mat enjoyed going to the places because of how many taverns and bars the places tended to have. It was a good way to resupply Mat's gold coffers. "Wait, did you say contest? What contest?"

"Probably some test of skill at arms, and it was issued by this 'Lord Markham', so the reward must be quite sizeable, indeed. I wonder."

Personally I wouldn't mind a sea monster or two, sailing is one of my most treasured passions, since it leads me to wild worlds far across the stars ladden with adventure and booty, alas, I miss my companions, what's the point of an adventure if there's no-one to share it with? I want to regain my brazen attitude. And with that he leapt to his feat and began inspecting the vessel, and began to wonder as to what she was called.

"What be this beauties name?" - Asked Fandral indirectly.

"You haven't heard of Ankh-Morpork?! It's the greatest... errgghh, well the biggest city on the Disc." Rincewind pauses, "On the other hand, I have never heard about AvLee either and I've been around quite a lot. Mostly against my will. Is... is this somewhere near the Counterweight Continent? It's so secluded from the rest of the world, it would make sense we have not heard of each other."

"Hopefully the rest of the journey will continue to be as calm. I've had enough excitement to last me a while..."

"No doubt," Trelmer agrees commiseratingly.

"Probably some test of skill at arms, and it was issued by this 'Lord Markham', so the reward must be quite sizeable, indeed."

"Close," the well-dressed Elf says amiably. "His Grace is hosting a scavenger hunt on Emerald Island, with Castle Harmondale and the lands around it as the prize. Though with the number of competitors involved, it may turn in to a test of arms...there has been quite a stir about the whole thing, as you can imagine."

"What be this beauties name?"

The Dark Elf smiles widely, and the expression seems somehow more genuine than any he's given before. "This is the Turquoise Bay, and she's one of the largest ships in our fleet. ((Though anyone whose char has a reasonable amount of wooden-sailing-ship experience will be able to note that she still isn't big as sailing ships go.)) Not our fastest, but she can outrun any ship the Regnans put in the water and still carry enough supplies to get from here to Jadame."

"Is... is this somewhere near the Counterweight Continent? It's so secluded from the rest of the world, it would make sense we have not heard of each other."

The brief blank look Rincewind gets in response quite clearly says 'no,' but the dusky woman says it aloud anyway. "No...the continent is Antagarich. You've heard of that, at least?" Her tone implies a nonverbal I hope?

A scavenger hunt? Mat smiled, he had gone on scavenger hunts when he was a younger man in the Two Rivers. While he hadn't always won, it had been fun exploring the valley and Mountains of Mist in the search of something that had been hidden. Sure, the chance that it might come to blows was slightly off-putting, but Mat was sure he would have fun. Plus, it might give him time to figure out how to get back home. "Well, I think that I might just have to join in myself."

Tristan is a little startled from his thoughts by the furry one. He turns to face it, trying to play back what it had said in his mind.

"Mad? At what? Oh, am I 'mad'? Well, at the moment, I am unsure. I would not think so. However, given the current situation, I may be beginning to question that."

Now that his mind was off the stars, Tristan seats himself once more.  He sits in an area near to the furry one, facing it as best he can. He starts fiddling with the mace hanging at his side, rolling its head upon the deck, and starts thinking about the fact that if it was a heavier one, he may have had trouble rising to the surface of the water. That would have been unfortunate.

While messing around with the mace, Tristan overhears conversation about the scavenger hunt that’s going to happen. He thinks about it, and then looks to the one who interrupted his earlier thoughts.

“So, do these sorts of things happen often, awarding land to winners of games? Oh, I should probably introduce myself. My name is Tristan.”

"Ummm, yes, yes of course I did. It's starting to make sense now. Well, thank you for your help. I think I'll go see what all the fuss is about." Said Rincewind deciding he doesn't want to attract anymore attention to himself.

The former wizard stood up and joined the rest of his unwilling companions, finally finding the time to eat and drink the food he was given. As he tried to understand what everyone was talking about, he heard a voice inside his head.

"Rincewind, I think I got it."

"Who are you?"

"I'm you."

"Oh, it's me again. Well, what do I want this time?"

"Rincewind, I don't think I'm on the Disc anymore."

A sailor laughs good naturedly at Bowie's request and tells him that even most of the crew don't get beds. ((Seriously.)) He is instead handed a light blanket and shown to a quiet spot of deck.

“So, do these sorts of things happen often, awarding land to winners of games? Oh, I should probably introduce myself. My name is Tristan.”

"Pollo. And nope. 'S why it's a big deal, see? Chance to be a big shot, get-rich-quick, be king for a day!" He chitters in what you realize a moment later is a laugh and grins, showing overlarge front teeth.

"Can I have some sleeping arrangements? That bit of deck looks remarkable comfortable and I would like to take it before one of my companions takes it out from under my nose."
