Corribus, since you've said before that you're a beer connoisseur, what are some of your favorite State-side beers that you'd recommend?

Well without spending a whole lot of time on it, some of my favorite domestics, off the top of my head, that are widely available:

(1) Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA.  Actually just about anything Dogfish Head [Delaware] makes is good(Raison d'Etra, brewed from raisins, is an edgy choice if you're adventurous), but you can't go wrong with this hoppy brew on a hot summer day.

(2) Southern Tier Chokolat.  This one may be a little hard to find, but Southern Tier [Upstate New York] also makes a cook coffee stout, and their Hop Sun is a nice summer ale.  (Their stouts, like this one, usually come in large, corked bottles, that's where you should look for it.)

(3) Old Rasputin Imperial Stout.  This is a powerful stout, pretty bitter and full of complex flavor.  Great in winter. Serve cool, not cold.

(4) Allagash White [Portland ME].  Lightly spiced wittbier, unfiltered – think a cross between a hefeweisen and a Belgian style ale.  This one is consistently gets rated very highly by beer enthusiasts and for good reason.  I had the benefit of having this on tap a few weeks ago and it was like drinking a bit of heaven.

(5) Goose Island Honkers Ale.  Not sure how easy this is to find outside the Chicago area, but it’s just a good drinkable beer for any occasion.  Nothing fancy or intense, but interesting enough to surpass most of the swill that’s out there.

(6) Oberon.  Bells Brewery in Kalamazoo Michigan is one of the best nationally-distributed microbreweries in the country IMO.  And Oberon is one of my perennial favorites.  I go back to it all the time.  A clean summer ale, great when you’re grilling or just hanging out on the porch.

Some lesser knowns – if you ever see them, pick them up for a treat.

Lancaster Brewery Cream Stout.  If you’ve never had a cream stout, it’s time to find one, and this one is the best I’ve tasted.

New Glarus Uff-Da.  This is a really great brewery I came across driving through Wisconsin.  Everything they made was universally good, but this German style Bock stood out among the rest.  Haven’t seen this brewery at my local distributer, though, so you might have to order (or go to Wisconsin).  Their Dancing Man Wheat is pretty good, too.

I'll add more if they come to me.

The beer selections suck in this area compared to Boston. I wouldn't be surprised if I had to order the vast majority of them unless I picked a case up while in Pittsburgh or something.

I'll take note of your list though. I can drink any cheap ass wine and probably still like it well enough, but I gotta up the bill for beers. The econo stuff just doesn't do the job.

Well the nice thing about beer is that even the best stuff can be had for reasonable price.  Six pack of even premium domestic craft brews will run you at most $14, and usually more like $10.  Per serving <$2.  Compare that to wine.  The cheapest bottles run $10, and that's only about 4 glasses, or $2.50 a serving.  Better wines are far more expensive.

Thing is, that I'm very rarely displeased with new beers from domestic crafters.  I go out and pick stuff up I've never heard of and most of the time I'm pretty happy.  Wines, though.. eh, I'll drink it to be social but the whole thing is lost on me.  And some are just damn near undrinkable.

Looking forward to the pick of pumpkin ales in a few weeks.  A lot of people can't stand them, but I like the spicy ones where you can actually taste the pumpkin.  Then again maybe it's just the association with fall.

Well, like with anything, if you buy the fat vats vs the bottles you'll get more for your money.

Man you are lucky, over here a bottle of proper beer cost 5$ (pretty much) .. and if you're having a beer at a pub or something then you have to expect at least 10$, all the way up to 15$ for a glass.

Wine on the other hand you can get a nice bottle for only 20$ (though in pubs it will cost more like 100$..)

I am a wine-person mostly, but nothing can compete to a cold beer on a hot summer eve *dreamy eyes* .. too bad we've had pretty much no hot summer days here.

@EDN: Well, in here the pub I love to drink my problems away charges ~3 euro per pint of guinness(10 in our currency) and most other beers, not the bottled ones cost around 2 euro (7 litas). so while counting in our currency it can be quite expensive, but the pub doesn't serve crappy mainstream beers from which most restaurants rip you off.

If I go to a pub I want to drink beer which aren't available to buy in stores. Well, except for Guinness.

I personally don't care if it's mainstream, as long as it tastes good that's what matters. Guess it's pretty expensive over there, I mean German has cheaper beer (mostly, I paid 10€ for a drink and three beers..)

39 euro cents for a can of beer in a German store(REWE). it's the cheapest kind, but for us slave labor I mean hard working immigrants it was a salvation. other than that I liked Krombacher and Beck's. Didn't went to pubs in Germany because I didn't lived in a big city. and the local bar/nightclub/whatever was a piece of crap.

Out of German beers I like Erdinger(The blond one). Not a huge fans of wheat beer but this one is quite tasty and goes well when I'm in the mood for "S=something different"

I don't even remember the name of the one I tasted, it was one brewed in Hamburg .. and it was light in color, really tasty and not too pricy! I wish you could get cans of beer over here, but it's pretty much impossible .. and if I could get hold of it I would probably have to pay at least a 100€, if not twice that amount.

Wanna go back, German is cheap and good! Me like

too bad that the stuff they export tastes like horsepiss. probably watered down with a window cleaner or something.

I have a question though, why beer in Scandinavia is so expensive? I mean really. One time my friend brought us back Swedish beer of which one can cost him ~7 euros.

Sweden has cheap beer compared to us in Norway, but I guess it has something to do with the high average income. We have a large and rather wealthy middle class, which makes things so much harder for students and poor people to get by...

Most higher % alcohol in Norway have something added to them that will make you throw up once you've drank a certain amount...

5 beers on an empty stomach and I'm at the toilet. I'm a pussy.

Not that I really mind. A quick mouth rinsing and I can just crack open another.

They serve some quality beer and whiskey for a fair price (Unless you compare to a super market)

To me a normal, fine beer can have up to 8% alcohol volume. anything stronger than that is preserved specially to bums and asocial maggots.

Rye moonshine. 85%. strongest one I had. But you have to make sure it's made from rye. others just won't do it.

Checked on this brand. 9% alcohol volume? Not something I'd normally drink, but this beer doesn't seem to be some crap that degenerates would drink. I'd actually like to try this one.
