A confession

ok, everyone, serious time. serious, personal issue time. It's time I came out with a confession. I know it's wrong, it's gone against everything I believe in, how I was raised and educated, but I just can't lie to myself any more about it.

I didn't like the olympics.

I know, shock to you all, but I didn't like London 2012. during that time, I didn't hear about any other bits of news around the world, and everyone was caught up in a completely misplaced sense of national pride, cheering "team GB" on, waving union jacks around with a false sense of optimism. It felt just like one big distraction whilst something sinister happens underneath.

This is no disrespect to the athletes and their families, they've trained their whole lives for this, but really, I just didn't enjoy it. the opening ceremony and closing ceremony were nice (even though they have one f**king direction on instead of someone decent like Iron Maiden) but really, those were the highlights for me. Sorry guys, didn't really enjoy it.

Also, I'm gay, but that's not really a big deal.

First of all

Next in line would be, its cool man, not everybody has to enjoy everything, individuality is there for a reason...

Third thing, 90% of the regular news are about horrid things anyhow, having 10 days that are about games&fun, instead of raped kids and oil prices is actually a good thing IMO....

Last thing, was this like a known thing or did you just out yourself ?
In any case, gratz...

My little brothe kept complaining about the lack over-view on the other teams, the commentators commented ONLY on britain, no matter what, I think I caught a bit of new-zealand and Australia in the canoe race (idk what it's called ) but that's it. A little extreme, the other teams did a very great job, and all I have to listen to is comments on 7th place britain.

Also they lip-synched in the closing ceremony. They wanted everything to go 'well'. Bloody tragic compared to Beijing, also the amount of times they repeated 'my house, in the middle of our street' was at-first awkward, then increased the chances of me pulling the trigger with each consecutive repeat.

that's fair enough, and I completely understand that. however, for me, it just felt a bit force. I felt a little bit like I was in the stepford wives for 10 days

Bud, you are quite busy punching big holes into the general opinion that gays generally have a good taste. Someone decent like Iron Maiden?
4 Billion people watching, it doesn't make much sense to pick a footnote of British Metal history and declare that as being representative for something.

I've quite enjoyed the games including opening and closing ceremony, and considering how low the common denominator must be if you want to make it right for half the world, they rocked the world (and it was clear they would, when Jimmy Page played Whole Lotta Love reprenting London four years ago in the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics).

Also considering the carnal appetites of the athletes - a thing that first really got into the spotlight in Sydney 2000, when athletes who had their competetion in week 2 complained they couldn't sleep because there was a continous party going on in the athlets's village and the sauna orgies of the Finns became world famous, but making the headlines in London as well - together with the fact that the next Olympics will take place in Rio/Brazil, I have high expectations for some class A entertainment for the next Olympics, starting with a carnivalish opening ceremony the climax of which will be Pele hitting the stage and promising Viagraa for everyone as much as they want, and ending with an orgy in a big last come-together for all.

Anyway. London was great. Seb Coe hit the nail when he said, we did it RIGHT, because they did.

Well... those horrid things do keep happening during that time, and I don't like the thought of me missing out on ten days of raped kids.
No, wait! That sounds totally wrong!

Being British (somewhat) I did tune it to catch the Games.  I agree with Bixie that it was a tad too Britain orientated, but I think its fine that the host country get to gloat and boast a little.

But what really got my goat was the damn awful Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

I have spent hours on the phone with my grandmother listening to her derision and vitriol regarding the over abundance of "pop and youth culture" in those ceremonies.

Personally, I thought they actually let Britain and the Games down.  Far too 'young and dumb' ... I mean .. who the hell were these people????  I recognized a few faces, but mostly I was left ...... like ... meh!

EDIT:

Actually, it is my belief that the drug cartels would have done a hell of a lot better in their Opening and Closing Ceremonies.  Maybe one would make my wish come true and make those God Awful Beckham's disappear.

Ugh Smithey, you have such appallingly bad taste.  Ugh.

Regardless, the nepotism regarding the ceremonies re: the Beckhams/Spice Girl nonsense isn't something you want to see regarding a competition like the Olympic Games.

And am I the only one (apart from grandma) who thought that the set up with the Queen supposedly parachuting into the arena was just downright inappropriate?

Agreed, they should've dropped her without a parachute.
As for the Olympics - this is one of these events where you can gather people from different nations, cultures and races, make them compete between themselves and have fun, not risk a quarrel or war. Even if it's just for two weeks every few years, it's definitely worth it.

Well, if you don't have the money, don't become a host candidate. Explain it to your government next time. The idea behind the games has nothing to do with how they are organised.

Ahh if it was only that easy and idealistic Zen.  Next time the British Government come up with some damn stupid idea, the Brits only have to put their hand up and say "Hold on there chaps, this doesn't seem totally cool, may we have a vote on it.  We can, oh jolly good show".

And I have only just got Elvin's post .... gosh I am so damn clueless.

As I see it, most people are either fine with that stupid idea or don't care (probably the latter are more).  Otherwise they would've done something. Simple but true, admit it.

I've never really cared for the Olympics and probably never will.  Seems like a big waste of time and money to me.  Does it really matter who is the best in the world at throwing a heavy disc?  Or that some new guy from Jamaica can run 100 meters in 0.00004 less seconds?  Think of all the hours these athletes waste training for something so completely devoid of any benefit to humanity.  These are talented people - why don't they hone a talent that's actually useful?

My opinion on the Olympics makes people angry.  Seriously, when I tell people I think the Olympic games are stupid, they actually get mad about it.  As though I'm some heathen freak because I don't enjoy watching synchronized leap frog, or whatever the hell they're trying to be the best at.  That people get angry because I think the Olympics are a big waste of time actually makes ME angry.

The fact that US Congress has actually considered giving medal-winning athletes an excemption on income taxes for the prize money drives me absolutely bonkers.  That about sums up my feelings about the Olympics.

But at least the US kicked the snow out of China.
