18. How long did World War one last?(Years please)# Ah ha! I know this one for sure. In total, it was from 1914-1920 so that would make it roughly 6 years

You`re wrong. It was from 1914 to 1918.

Ok, I was a little off , but technically you aren't correct either.
...hmm, ok the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assasinated by a member of the Black Hand in 1914. By the end of that year, most alliances have been formed, and war declared by all the major powers in Europe. The US entered the war in 1917, after Congress was called and the declaration of war was passed overwhelmingly. In late 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm abdicates, and two days later, the Allies sign an armistice. The actual peace treaty was signed in Versaiiles peace conference, in 1919. As the US was the maain deciding factor of the war, the war with Germany was officially declared by Congress and signed in 1921, after being defeated in 1920 twice. The seperate peace treaty was ratified later that month, along with Wilson's 14 points...although the US never did join the League of nations.

1) What was the Maginot Line? Named after Andre Maginot of France, they were a series of fortifications built in response to the Blitzkrieg tactics emplyed by the Germans. It was huge and was well armed, but it wasn’t very effective, as the Germans simply passed by it in WWII.
2) What was the name of Hitler's dog? Wolf
3) When was the Irish potato famine? Lasted for roughly 5 years, in the later part of the 19th century
4) Which US president lead the 'Rough Riders'? Teddy
5) What was the average age of a vietnam soldier? 19 I believe. However, there were indeed many younger soldiers.
6) Who was Freidrich Engels? Started contributing to  Karl Marx’s newspaper, and eventually they got to work together, sharing many of the same views, becoming close friends. Engels came from a wealthy family so he supported Marx and his family. They finally ended up writing the communist’s bible, the Communist Manifesto.
7) Rene Descartes is famous for saying what? The 17th century philosopher is probably most known for saying, “I think, therefore I am.”
8) When was the Zulu war? No idea what it is, but I’ll guess some time in the 19th century?
9) Henry the Seventh stormed England with an army of which nationality? Not sure. Other Englishmen?
10) How was the Spanish Armada 'defeated'? The English sent fire ships in to scatter the Spanish fleet, and distraught, they then sent their powerful gunships on them…many of the surviving ships eventually shipwrecked or sunk in the storm.
11) Name the temporary German currency created during the depression? No idea.
12) Name two 'cures' for plague? Lots of fluid intake and antibiotics.
13) When were women granted the vote in britain? I wouldn’t know for sure…probably the 1920’s or something.
14) What was 'Agent Orange'? A herbicide kind of thing used by the US military, to quickly clear out trees in Vietnam.
15a) What was operation 'Sealion'? A plan of Germany to invade England in WWII…I don’t think it was ever initiated though.
b) 'Case Yellow'? Heh, dunno.
16) What nationality was Stalin? Russian…Soviet
17) How did 'Orangemen' originate? From the Orange Order of some guys in Ireland.

***

1. Who set out macedonia on conquering Greece? Not sure what you’re asking…
2. Where was Alexander the Great stopped? Once again I’mnot sure what you’re askin, but I will guess anyway. Troy?
3. When did the 3rd punick war take place? The first punic war started in around 250 BC…so I’ll guess 150 BC. …might be totally off.
4. About what year was Jesus born??? Eh eh? Although I myself believe in his birth, nobody can confirm when exactly it was. Supposedly it was on December 25 0 AD but a better estimate is early fall of 5BC.
5. How long was the Hundred year war? No 100 years that’s for sure…something like 115 years actually.
6. When did Copernicus die? When he got too old…which was in the mid 16th century I think.
7. When did Bastila(The greatest french prison) fall? I think last year it wasn’t exactly this day, but Bastille Day is considered the 14th of July. I was actually at the Eiffel tower to witness the 2001 celebration
8. When was the Anerican Civil war? In 1860 when Lincoln was elected, but Fort Sumter was attacked in 1861 if you want consider that the real beginning…the Battle of Bull’s Run doesn’t seem to be a good benchmark to me. Anyway, Lee surrendered at Appomattox in 1865.
9. When was the Suez Canal opened? Hmm, well I know the Panama Canal was finished during Teddy’s presidency, and it was meant to follow in the footsteps of the Suez, so it must be sometime in the late 19th century.
10. When was the Russian Revolution? Which one? The Bolshevik Revolution which started the Red Scare took place a few years before the Jazz age of the 1920’s.
11.When was NATO created? During Truman’s presidency…which was what? 50 years ago or something?
12. What was the Warsaz Pact? The warsaw pact was the Communist mutual defense pact between some East European countries…formed now long after NATO.
13. When was the Cuban Missile crisis? 1960’s ish
14. And finnaly when did USSR(Soviet union) disentigrate(fall appart)? ’91 …hmm, not all that long ago actually.

Not bad Terje:

Around the year 1000, Leif Ericson briefly established a colony in Vinland, believed by many to coincide with the Viking colony L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada.

Indeed, the Norse conquered Iceland.

Dude, you sure know your history.

Do you know why the settlements never worked?

I try to do my best...

I'm not sure about why their settlements didn't last, but I have a vague conception (?) of it.
I guess they had problems due to hostilities with the Natives, amongst other things. In addition, I'm not sure if they were numerous enough to stay. Also, I am under the impression that the voyagers were mostly men, and you know what that means, when itcomes to reproducing their "tribe"?

I guess there were other factors involved too, but I haven't really had about Norwegian Iron Age since I was 12...

wow ... it's like reading an encyclopedia! You got it Terje!

Why I asked is because the French and the English had problems as well with the Natives. And the problems still affect us in a huge way in Canada up to the present. The part I want to get at is the fact that the Norse where intelligent enough to leave when they saw they where in someone's backyard. Not the French or the English - no sir. They plowed right in and killed as many as they could. Pretty sad to have that kind of history behind you.
