Appeal to every Heroes VI owner

The first anniversary of Heroes VI release is near - and patch 1.8 as well.
This will be something special, since 1.8 will come with an enormous amount of bug fixes and changes - and sadly and inevitably probably with some new or previously undetected bugs as well.

Still, 1.8 will continue the balancing work and introduce a truckload of serious balance changes - which we are sadly not at liberty to disclose at this time -, leaving virtually no stone unturned, and because of that I urge everyone with half an interest in the game and the series to get the ball rolling again and start a skirmish map, or a duel - or both - to check for yourselves once the patch is out.

It has to be said, that the actual means and options for a rebalancing and adjustments were and are severely limited due to the fact that even slight changes seem to introduce new and unexpected bugs, so everyone has been extremely unwilling to change core game mechanisms - like the working of a racial, for example. For the same reason a restructuring/reorganizing of the hero abilities would probably be fatal for game stability.

That's why a lot of improvising was called for, that and a steering towards the Spider Goddess: you know, Asha uses all.

There is one important thing that cannot be stressed enough, and I think Elvin will confirm this: communication with Limbic about what to patch and to balance and how to do it couldn't have been better, and I think - and hope - that this will show in the actual release. And of course continue: although a couple of people put a lot of work into the game to make it better, it's unlikely, that everything will be fine and dandy now.

That's why a lively discussion of the patch would be quite welcome, once it's out - and not only in theory, after taking the 10 minutes or so necessary to go through the patch notes.

In my humble opinion, 1.8 will make the game so much more enjoyable - provided, of course, that we won't have another double damage for neutrals bug or something comparable -, so make sure to give it a try and give feedback.

Qp applied for all of JJ's hard work on improving H6.

That's programming for you. And anyone who has done it, now or in the past, can confirm this to be the case. Fixing the wheel will likely wreck the entire car.

As is likely to be known, my knowledge/insight in balance is hardly worth mentioning. But I'm just here to show my support.

Thanks JJ This is probably the end of the line, the culmination of all we have worked for all this time. Limbic has been very cooperative and helpful which sped up the testing process considerably and allowed many of our ideas to materialize. Unfortunately as JJ pointed out, there were limitations in what limbic could implement but I think that it went rather well all things considered. I wish we could have opted for some deeper changes but for now the game is looking better than ever. I have plans that will start materializing shortly after the release of 1.8 and I hope they will catch up It would be good to see the community active again, especially in the field of battle!

Well, "balance changes" is actually a very general term for everything that gets changed or adjusted without being buggy, so the scope is VERY broad here.
Believe my when I say that a lot of the changes will be quite recognizable for everyone, since we are not talking about giving this or that unit a HP more or less.

If you are speaking about the Area of Controll feature, then yes.
This is one of the Core Mechanics of the Game and therefor the chance is extremely slight that has been changed. If it weren't for the fact that Ubisoft is particularly pleased with this feature and has stated that they plan to incorporate it in the future. Which in turn makes the chance nihil that it is changed.

Aprt from the fact that there are those who actually like the Zones - and like it a lot -, a mapmaker is not required to actually use the feature. You can make maps that don't feature Zones or feature them but no control buildings.

I would like to know what disadvantages there are with zones? The only thing that changed is the fact that you don't have to put guards to a mine OR have a fast hero with a couple of troops patrolling the area to keep fast and light enemy scouts from disrupting resource supply, but can simply fortify the control building with troops instead - if any is there.
However, due to the fact that newly recruited heroes are at most 5 levels weaker than your main one, once the game gets rolling you can hire secondaries and equip them with special mine-disrupting abilities.

A great advantage is the possibility to have hero abilities and town building effects that are limited to the Zone the town/hero is in.

So what's wrong with them?

Looking forward to this! Starting with patch 1.5 this game has become a lot better and I will join in with the discussion as well even though I haven't been active for quite a while.

Oh nothing, except that they totally break immersion and negate exploration.

I'd rather take a RMG over usermade maps, personally.

Looking forward to it. When is it expected to come out?

I asked this before, but don't know where my post went: Will Limbic continue with the patch development beyond 1.8?

You don't need to be a genius to foresee a patch 1.81, fixing a couple of newly introduced bugs, but that's not what you mean, obviously.

Considering that 1.7 already was supposed to be the last patch, the fact that there will be 1.8 is pretty encouraging.
Still, I wouldn't be too surprised, if there was a lull after 1.8

What I can IMAGINE, though, is this: it seems, that every newly added content will make an integration patch necessary, and in case there will be products with additional content - let's say an addon - an integration patch will be necessary as well. In that case said integration patch would quite probably also fix a couple of bugs and add some obvious balance corrections...

Eight(?) patches and we're hoping this is the one that makes the game enjoyable?

Granted, I haven't played any of it yet, but even so I think that's a pretty sad statement on the current state of HoMM.

Not quite, some remaining bugs aside the game is in a pretty good state and has been for some time now. It will just get better.

Well, I'll wait till I actually see the patch, because for now, JJ an Elvins optimistic posts are the only clue that Limbic is actually working on something (art in Ashan compendium is only art to be precise).

And to tell you to truth there's a "simple" way to make me go back to playing the game. Release an expansion pack with Dungeon and Academy/Sylvan and I'm head over heals with this game once again. Even with bugs

Sigh.  I'm so sick of companies being so damn secretive about their updates.  If you want me interested in patch 1.8, give me some notes about the changes.  I've put over 150 hours into Heroes 6.  I've played through all the campaigns and the overpriced, disappointing Pirates DLC.  I'm going to need an interesting reason to come back to the game.  Notes would go a long way to build that interest.  Please, make me care about revisiting the Heroes 6 universe.

Don't be like Cyanide/Focus with Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition and hold on to update information like it's a nuclear command code.

What I find a bit annoying is that the insiders are ad hoc advertisement agents for the game for some time now. These messages are supposed to come from Ubisoft, not from you begging us to return to the game. And yes, the "no disclosure before release" crap, one would think that they should've learned by now.

Well, this is a war game. So fighting for resources by conquering (or sabotaging, if possible) enemy mines make sense. Conquering one building and thereby render every mine within a certain radius impossible to capture does not.

Unrelated to zones, but related to exploration:
There are too few artifacts and special buildings compared to the other games. And fewer mines now that they've reduced the number of resources.

Unrelated to zones, but related to eploration and immersion:
I liked it better when heroes/dwellings/scenery props/you-name-it wasn't scaled to the size of the hero, but representations of various points of interest.
Now it looks like the hero can only move 25 meters a day, it's ridiculous.
Moreover, the towns are WAY to big on the AM screen now, it takes forever to walk to the entrance when you're on the opposite site.

Well I already enjoyed my duels earlier, if this patch makes it more enjoyable all the better!

Also, there ain't that many companies that will tell you in advance exactly what the next patch will do. Not every company tells you that a patch is coming, in fact. And again, neither do they litterally call to the gamers to make a list of what they want so it can be implemented - at least, not on this scale. Yes, communication was bad. Now it's better. You're asking for more than most companies would do, with the sole reason that it used to be worse than most companies? That's silly.
