Black Hole's team was too small so Ubi decided to switch to an even smaller team? Uh...

It was not necesarily the case that BH was too small. BH promised to do whatever they signed on for, for an X amount of money. And they could not deliver, in the end. Team size is a factor, but there are many more. (Competence comes to mind, but I am not here to imply that BH is incompetent(Which they likely aren't))
The point that I was trying to make was that Limbic is doing what BH  were and would've been doing if they were still in business at roughly the same speed. But with less people and in slightly more dificult circumstances.

@ Anna:
We do not know what content we will be getting. It's too early for that. What we do know is that you need not have vanilla installed to play. And if you have installed it, everything will likely be merged via your conflux profile.

Judging how the Conflux stuff ,,worked'' to this point I'm really full of anxiety about this whole standalone business. I mean, how will they transmit dynasty traits etc if someone played the vanilla game? How will it fare for someone who didn't play vanilla in the first place? Or will they cast off the whole Conflux idea for this expansion. Even if they do manage to bring it together somehow, judging by how many bugs were in the initial system, this could really become a mess

For now I hope this ,,standalone'' thing is a kind of misunderstanding... if not it seems like they are looking for a fresh start for Heroes 6 maybe?

I just hope that every thing that is in the vanilla game is also available in the expansion. I hated how a lot of maps in H5 vanilla and HOF weren't also available to play in TotE. Who wants to boot up the older games just to play certain maps?

Good news that did not reach me until now.
I have been desiring a Sylvan faction for long though.

In the end though I expect to have all H5 factions and Sanctuary. I will pay a lot of money for this.

I think the fact, that the upcamming expansion will be a stadallone is very good.

We all know how hard was it for Limbic to understand the code, and how limiting it was for them. Now with a new developer, it is only logical that he would make his own Heroes VI, a copy of the one made by BH and Limbic but in his own code. Hopefully this will make the game more easier to maintain, modable

You are telling me that the state of the code BH left behind was not the main reason why the new expansion is a Standallone? Not even the fact that many features were hardcoded and not open to changes? Or the fact that it is generally easier to make a new code rather then try to figure out how the one you enherit works?

It seems only natural for them to release expansions as standalone products after TotE.
Moreover, I'm inclined to think that the whole "five factions only" ordeal was so they could make expansions in the first place,
rather than Academy, Dungeon and Sylvan (and Fortress) being left out due to a lack of time & resources.

Obviously an even better plan would have been to make a more bug-free, stable game with more features and only 4 factions to begin with, because they could have sold even more addons for a more refined game.
Heck, three would have been even better yet. Yes, 3 factions only. & faction addons, plus 2 more for SimTurns and Random Map Generator. And every second one could have been a standalone campaign addon with an upgrade of the map editor like they did it with Shadow of Death.
This way, 12 to 15 addons within the next, well, 5-7 years would have been possible.

Heck, not even that did they do right.

Hahaha, but seriously, we probably only got five factions because Slava only had five* kids.

*AFAIK

I disagree.  Disciples III went that route and it didn't do the series any favors.  I think the outrage would have been overwhelming if we had only 3 factions at launch.

But I'm fairly sure they'll start with it soon enough.

Yeah, but Disciples has never had more than 5 factions in total and the outrage there was not so much about the faction number reduction but about the major mechanics change (the hardcore Disciplers take serious issue with any step that might make the game more similar to Heroes and Disciples III more than crossed that border).

new code = better code = less bugs = more stable game = less patches

i'm only hoping they will rework the code. my pessimistic self says that they won't do it because ubi won't pay for their mistakes and they will just pay the devs for the new stuff! hope that's not the case!

@GunFred
you wanted to say that you will pay a reasonable amount of money right? because paying A LOT of money about anything, led us to 10 euros DLCs that eventually offered very less than they were worth...

Yeah, I consider myself one, and playing Disciples III demo was just enough for me, the battle system was what made the game unique in the first place (climate and art direction as well of course, but that was somewhat preserved)... Heroes 5 also crossed "the border" for me with it's stupid initiative bar system, so as you can see major changes are not always a good thing...

I would really like to see Heroes VI fully finished, with all 9 Factions present by the last expansion.

Unfortunately, I don't think the game will make it to 4 expansions. They'll have 2 expansions MAX.

Anyone optimistic about seeing 2 new factions per expansion?

I think everyone like to see that. And I highly doubt that it is unknown by the devs.

However he's how I expect it to go down.
This first Expansion, we're only getting Dungeon. That has been the plan all along, since they've hinted at Dungeon in the end of the vanilla campaign. I highly suspect that this expansion has been in development since Black Hole went under and was in predev before and/or during BETA. (We got a modded concept-art of the Minotaur at April-fools, showing that it was in the works)

Now depending on the succes of the expansion, Ubisoft will decide wether there will be a second one. They might have started the predev already for one, they might not have. If there will be a second expansion, I suspect it will contain either Academy or Sylvan, or reasonably possibly both. Ubisoft knows how many people want the classic factions back and how much goodwill it will create.(Late goodwill, but goodwill still)
If the second contains only one of these, I highly suspect another Expansion will follow with the other. But somehow I doubt this.

Which leaves us with Fortress. As much as Fortress is part of the world and how much effort is put into it lore-wise, Fortress is arguably the least loved faction. There many who love it, but there are equally as many if not more who dislike it.(or at least the way it was portrayed in Heroes5) This makes creating Fortress somewhat of a risk. And calculation of that risk will lead to the assesment wether it is viable or not to do so. This could lead to, IMHO, 3 choices: 1 Not make Fortress; 2 Make Fortress, but do it small with little to no campaign and sell it as DLC/Adventure-pack; 3 Create an expansion with Fortress.

I highly doubt Ubisoft will squeeze 4 expansions out of the 4 remaining factions. Not because Ubisoft does not want to sell us them. But rather because that is going to stretch the Heroes 6 cycle very long and perhaps too long. And while the producers might be willing to do such things, the board might not.

Then again, I'm speculating into the air here. My guess is as good as any. And we can do little else but wait and see what the future will bring us.

I actually like the fact that dwarves got their own faction in Heroes V. The problem was, however, that they named it "Fortress". The swampy Heroes 3 Fortress was a well-liked faction, and I think replacing it with dwarves is a disappointment. It would be like if the Sanctuary Faction was named "Rampart" instead. Not a terrible faction, but people would be disappointed that it's not the classic Rampart.

But yes. The dwarf Fortress Faction is definitely the least important faction of the Ubisoft Heroes factions. It's awesome that Dungeon is coming back. I really hope to see Academy return, and hopefully Sylvan too.

On another note, I'm just happy that there will be an expansion at all. When they released the so-called "Gold Edition" as just vanilla with 2 DLC packs, I thought they were done with it.
