Campaign questions

The first scenario of the Undead campaign is incredibly difficult for a noob like me.  The walkthrough just says to go to the underground tunnel and then capture the first Might town, and so on.  The problem is that it is incredibly difficult to defend against Orange and it seems like I just don't have enough units to fight them.

Am I right to assume that I'm probably not going to be able keep my towns since I only have one hero?  should I consolidate all my units into one army?  Any ideas on how to beat this first scenario of the undead campaign will be deeply appreciated.  Also, what class should I try to get with my main hero?

When the main hero knows death magic,I usually try to learn order and nature to be able to cast teleport and to summon ice demons.

Yes,you should move big enough army with your main until he is ready to go without creatures(in company with other developed heroes).

How do you try to do it now?

I'm assuming you are talking about Gauldoth's campaign?
I don't quite remember, but you may want to try taking the barb town before you go to the underground, if you can. I think thats what I did but don't remember for sure what I did. Because I think there are some hard fights down there. It might be better to put efforts towards taking that town first because weakening the AI as much as you can means less threat from him later. You should be able to hold that town I think. But you may not need to and if it is weak, I don't remember, might as well let the AI have it if he gets it and try to hold the stronger towns instead.

What you could try also is actually increasing the difficulty level if you haven't. Because what this does is increase the numbers of the neutral creatures, and as a result this slows down the AI growth and he won't come to attack you as early. Only problem in doing this is that later on in the campaign (I think its the 3rd map, maybe 4th), there is a stack of vampires that you have to fight early and they are tough to get past when their stack size is high. But I didn't have combat skills for Gauldoth when I did it so maybe if you do it won't be so bad.
The class I went with for Gauldoth was demonologist, and the campaign was pretty easy once you get strong summons, except for a few areas like the vampires.

Okay, I beat it using my usual noob way - consolidate into one army, keep fighting while accumulating resources and conquering towns.  As long as you act quick, it's not too difficult.  This strategy works as it is a small map.  I'm now faced with a much more difficult scenario - you guessed it, scenario two.

For those of you who forgot - I won't blame ya, this game is old, but I've only recently started really seriously playing - you start out west of a neutral Death town.  Taking this town is easy.  But then you are faced with two very strong opponents, Blue and Green.  If you wait too long they become too strong to take down.

You can beat the scenario without conquering Blue and Green, since it's really about defeating the last boss, Orange.  But the last boss is tough: level 20 general, with 40 venom spawns, over 1000 skeletons, and 20 bone dragons.  It seems like the better approach is to completely defeat Blue and Green first.

The problem is that Blue is very evasive.  Their towns are far.  My one army strategy doesn't seem to be effective, as by the time my one army gets to a Blue town, my home town is under siege.  It is incredibly difficult to track down the Blue heroes.  I want to level up another hero so that hero can hold his/her own with a second army, but I'm concerned that I won't have enough time.  By the time I have two strong armies, Blue might be too strong to take down.

So, any thoughts?  How many armies should I have?

If that is the case, yes, concentrate on leveling your main heroes with the main army battling the Blue and Green and taking Orange towns one by one.

Is this Gauldoth's campaign?
I don't remember the second map being a problem on any difficulty level. If your Gauldoth is a demonologist I think your summons should be strong enough to get you through most battles without losing your hired troops. Try not to lose any hired troops at all, so they will continue to build up from beginning to help with the end battle or main battle.
I'd also hire one or two more heroes to join the main, because more heroes with spells and such generally means more control over the enemy. With about 3 heroes in your main army you can leave other stacks behind to defend towns. Its great to put shooters (like venom spawns if you have them) up on the towers, shooters on the towers can really decimate the computer.

One important thing to state is whether you're playing with or without Equilibris or not, as it changes the balance in the game.

It has been a while since I last played HoMM IV... As I recall it, the Death campaign is somewhat difficult because it completely changes the strategy you have to use. If you're anything like me, in the previous campaign (Nature) you should have gone to battle with Elves, Fairy Dragons and Water Elementals - ranged or magic units - and relied very much on summoned units. This time around, you get somewhat crappy spells (Death is my least favourite school of magic...) and lots of melee units. To make matters worse, most of the units can't get good moral because they're undead!

What's the point in using Death town? Well, there are two wonderful things: Vampires and Vampires. This level 3 unit is your best asset for a very long time, until you get any level 4 and cast Vampiric Touch on them. Then you can concentrate on hitting those pesky and annoying living creatures to keep your soldiers on top shape.

Besides the dwelling in town, you can amass large quantities of Vampires by the unit trait of Death skills: Necromancy! Just like Resurrection, at the end of each battle you get free units for your army - and if you're using Equilibris, you can choose what unit you want! Free Vampires!

The first scenario on Death's campaign, you should have gone underground and flag the Vampire dwelling. Afterwards, try to have little casualties for your overgrown bats (and it's quite simple: you wait until the end of turn, fly in and grab some kills and fly out of harms way - no retaliation is that good!) and you're set to win. Try to level Gauldoth to the max and everything starts getting really easy.

As for the second scenario, I never had any problems with it. I shall go and play from the beginning to see where it can be troublesome. In the meantime, you can install Equilibris (yes, it's that good, even by weakening Vampires) or you can read some basic strategies on the links on top of this forum.

See you soon in (half-)death.

Gauldoth half-dead

[quote name=MengTzuAhoj.Hey.I apologize in advance that my English is not good, I'm from Czech Republic.
As for the campaign, It's not that hard, go underground and then select everything you do.
Unnecessarily let go in large battles let you have an army to conquer the city.
then get out of the underground, pozbírejte everything you can and go to
Firstly, it seeks to achieve grandmaster necromancy.
I myself am personally taking skills death and magic of nature,
nothing more I gave him, his only doprovázejcí units were vampires
and I are in the middle of each scénáže had over 200.
