Countering Stronghold?

I'm having a hard time playing against stronghold heroes. Even as a higher level hero, they just always go first, and are able to kill a good portion of my units before I even get a chance to do anything.

What are some good counters to this, I use the Haven faction.

What army size are we talking about? Reputation? Class?

Pretty much any army size. I just have issues with how they always go first and can mess up the order.

Later levels are a little easier, since I usually am able to have a res, or a buff. I also look for +init items to counter them with. But level 10-15 is extremely hard for me.

SO that's during an actual game then? Campaign? Surely not, you fight them on the first map. You play custom games multiplayer, or is that against the computer?

Orcs have one glaring weakness, they cannot properly deal with crowd control as they have no dispel. They cannot boost their spellpower or magic defense. Destructive and incapacitating spells like blind, stasis or petrify work lovely on them as do spells that increase your defense or weaken their offense. You could try amassing such spells or disable them one at a time. Not much more I can say, I can only show you in action.

I hope you have the ambush perk. If not, get it.

Another fine spell is (Mass if possible) Agony, don't forget that, it works wonders.
Stronghold usually goes might(6/7 creatures dealing might damage) which can best be countered by magic, especially Necro magic.(Turtle + Agony + crowd control - Puppet, Frenzy, Mass Weakness etc - . Skills to max: Dark magic, Arcane Exaltation, Tactics.)

Magic stronghold requires more skill to pull off, as their stats will be inferior compared to other mages,(no access to Prime!) so expect a hybrid build. It's possible to repel with either class, but magic is again the easier way to go.
If going might however, pick all the usual stuff(Tactics, Ambush, Destiny's Chosen 1-3, Assailant/Defender, eventually Resilience, Cleave, Rampage, Heroic Charge, etc...) and Purge/Mass Dispel. Their offensive spells won't hit as hard as your army will, so if You disrupt his/her buffs,(Either with spells, or by crushing the hard-hitter stacks early) you're good. That is, if he doesn't manage to massively boost his ini - via a combination of Ring of Haste, Crag Hack's Helmet, Mesmerizing Spaulders, etc - in which case You're screwed anyway. A heads-up: Even a might Stronghold can open with Mass Inner Fire, don't be surprised if it comes to that.

Generally speaking, if You survive the first 2 rounds or so, You'll probably be able to overwhelm them.

Incidentally, You'll find examples pro and contra in the replay thread
(Older replays being available on Youtube) courtesy of yours truly.

EDIT: Haven, eh? A bit harder to do it without dark, but manageable. Crowd control would be the key, with the Glories' and/or summoned Light Elemental's Searing Light, Blind, Stasis, -Petrification as a last resort -  and maybe Mass Ice Armor. Storm Winds also comes in handy. (A bit situational, but Grounded effectively cancels Furies, and is available relatively early. Ice Bolt could be used to stall, but I don't recommend an extensive spellbook. Stick to the 4-5 that best complements the circumstances and your strategy.) Also, do take advantage of Guardian Angel!(Sacrifice Cores if You must, but protect your trump cards - Sun Crusaders/Griffins when might, Glories when magic, Celestials if circumstances allow) Remember that Stronghold can be hurt by Heal. I'm not saying go for it, but it's always an option to be considered with Vestals.
