Best & Worst Spells

What do you think is the best / worst spell for each level in combat? (Note, for they to be concidered spells they have to consume spell points, that means a no to Titans Lightning Bolt)

Here's my opinion..

Combat
------

Best:
Level 1 - Its between Bless, Dispel and Magic Arrow for me. If I have to pick only one it would have to be dispel.
Level 2 - Fire Wall, Lightning Bolt & Blind. I use Lightning Bolt the most out of all spells and I usually never use Firewall but Firewall is a great replacement for Force Field if you don't have enough mana or don't have it. Blind is also a great spell because, well, it blinds your enemy.
Level 3 - Easily Force Field. One of the best spells since I heard about it from this forum. I thought it was terrible because I never tried it and now its fantastic.
Level 4 - Armageddon (if you have dragons or phoenixes), Chain Lightning and Resurrection. Armageddon is, as I said, only good if you have a creature immune against level 4 spells, such as dragons, and a good spell power level and expert fire magic. Chain Lightning is a very overrated but also a great spell. Attacking 4 monsters is great, however, its drawback is that it can hit your own creatures. Resurrection is fantastic since it can resurrect. DERP.
Level 5 - Implosion. I don't have to explain do I?

Worst:

Level 1 - Protection from Fire / Water, who ever uses these?
Level 2 - Quicksand. I never use Quicksand because the AI never steps on it, its like he avoids it, and I never really have one of those huge battles.
Level 3 - Protection from Air / Earth and Hypnotize. Protection from Air / Earth, who uses these anyway? And hypnotize doesn't even work most of the time. Useless.
Level 4 - Fire Shield and Sorrow. Fire Shield doesn't hit alot and Sorrow is not worth casting, since it only lowers your enemies chance of not moving the next turn.
Level 5 - Magic Mirror, easily. Magic Mirror is a spell I never use because it doesn't do a whole lot. If I could decide what level this spell would be in I'd pick it to be in level 3.

Non-Combat
----------

Best:

Level 1 - Summon Boat. It would be better if it actually created a boat instead of magically moving it though
Level 2 - Visions. It's like Rogues but without taking up that extra slot! Awesome!
Level 3 - Non-Combat spells for Level 3? PFFT. None
Level 4 - Town Portal. I can't tell you how many times this spell has saved my town. Amazing spell, probably one of the best ones.
Level 5 - Dimension Door. I was gonna put Fly here but considering theres ONLY 2 SPELLS FOR LEVEL 5 I thought what spell is the best. You can use Dimension Door up to 3 times per day to teleport anywhere in the map area you can see. Saves time.

Worst:

Level 1 - View Air / Earth. There aren't really any other non-combat spells on level 1 and I never use these unless I'm doing campaigns.
Level 2 - Scuttle Boat. Why would I wanna remove a boat when I can just move it or let it be there? Or even use Summon Boat to move it?
Level 3 - Non-Combat spells for Level 3? PFFT. None
Level 4 - Water Walk. Not that bad of a spell, doesn't use that many spell points and genuinely a great spell, but there are only 2 non-combat spells for level 4.
Level 5 - Fly. Not a bad spell, but Dimension Door is simply better. I'd rather search for the Angel Wings artifact because thats much better, but concidering thats an extremely rare artifact, that might be a bad choice. Fly is great but Dimension Door is better.

EDIT:
Removed Sacrifice from worst level 5, Death Ripple from worst level 2 and Destroy Undead from worst level 3. Also changed the worst level 1 from Stone Skin to Protection from Fire / Water and worst level 3 from Forgetfulness to Protection from Air / Earth. Also added my best/worst on Non-Combat

Forgetfulness uselles? By "bugs" you mean when you cast it but shooters still shoot? It halves the number of creatures that are used in calculation of shooting damage. Only exp. Water mag. fully disables shooting. IIRC.

Those are great spells, but I was trying to keep it to only one spell. I failed. XD

Weakness is not level one spell.

About fortune and misfortune (I completely agree)
I totally forgot them.

Sacrifice is just a spell point waster and its a very weak Resurrect. If this spell had to exist I want it to be in level 2.

Castle vs. Inferno, hordes of high level units.
Round 1:
Castle player waits with archangels (expecting a blind)
Inferno player casts frenzy on Arch Devils, Arch Devils slay all Arch Angels round 1.

... Castle units gang bang Arch Devils ...

Round 2:
Inferno player casts sacrifice with a mere 13 power on Pit Lord, all Arch Devils have been brought back to battle.

--- What can resurrect do? Maybe in 7-8 rounds it'll eventually bring back all the Arch Angels... Sacrifice has a lot more potential than Resurrect for very big battles, still allowing to invest fully in attack and defense, especially when your level 7 unit has lower than standard hp. Even a 99 power resurrect will eventually have less potential and costs vital att/def for the main hero.

Sure the pit lords are lost, but 1 Arch Devil is much more useful than 3 Pit Lords.

I think I've underestimated Sacrifice. However, isnt Dimension Door/Town Portal a non-battle spell?
I'd also like to mention that Summon Air Elementals are worse than Water Elementals, since afaic they have less health and attack power?

Right, sorry. I didn't notice it was only in combat, and I spoke out of memory, as I don't have the game installed anymore.

Then I suppose I'll change the worst level 1 spell to stone skin, but I think misfortune is by far the worst spell. The best level 4 spell to resurrection and the best level 5 spell to implosion.

I choose water elemental in stead of fire/earth/air, because the other 3 seems more useful. Air for speed, Fire for magic arrow immunity, and Earth for health. Heck I'd choose earth/air over, say, magic mirror, but that may be more due to me lacking creativity, than magic mirror being awful for a level 5 spell.

There are a few uses which comes to mind, but none which teleport or a damage spell won't do as well.

Shield only works for hand to hand, so I would actually prefer stone skin over shield.

For me it is:

Best:
Lv 1: Haste/Slow (depending what town I am playing)
Lv 2: Blind
Lv 3: Teleport
Lv 4: Berserk/Town Portal
Lv 5: Dimension Door

Worst:

Lv 1: Protection from water/air/fire
Lv 2: Protection from earth
Lv 3: Misfortune
Lv 4: Sorrow
Lv 5: Summon (element)

^Protection from Earth is a level 3 spell (and also not bad enough to be worst in either level 2 or level 3).

It looks to me like most people are doing this for multiplayer... so I'll do it for "hard" singleplayer maps like Unleashing the Bloodthirsty/Season's maps.

Best:
Level 1 - Slow
Level 2 - Blind
Level 3 - Force Field
Level 4 - A toughie... I'll go with Town Portal. Honorable mention to Resurrection and Berserk.
Level 5 - Dimension Door... if that and Fly are locked, Summon Earth Elemental.

Worst:
Level 1 - Protection from Fire
Level 2 - Disguise
Level 3 - Misfortune
Level 4 - Slayer
Level 5 - Magic Mirror

May I refer you to the Heroes 3 page for earth magic concerning the level of Protection from Earth - spell. And I consider those spells practically useless.

You just haven't played the right maps then.

In some story based maps, they're the key to advancing early on.

Best:

1- Slow if hero is shooter based, Haste if hero is melee based.
2- Blind (should have been a level 4 spell)
3- Animate Dead if necro, Forgetfulness. Earthquake can be a game changer too if the catapult is destroyed but the AI never does that.
4- Resurrection, berserk (Town Portal beats all if non-battle can be selected)
5- Implosion (DD if non-battle can be selected)

Worst:

1- Protection from water
2- Fortune
3- Misfortune (only good when automatically mass-casted by wraiths in wog), Hypnotize cause it never ever works.
4- Sorrow (obviously not a level 4 spell, can switch places with blind.)
5- Magic Mirror. (I wont compare elementals because the choice depends on which magic school you have as a skill.)

- I don't understand why nobody fixes the forgetfulness bug (advanced and expert does the same thing) Just because it is an original heroes3 bug doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed.
- I think I'm missing how to use force field efficiently too, can anyone link the thread which explains the details.
- When we have expert water magic and many shooters, is bless a better option than prayer, in terms of damage only?

Well that page is wrong lol. If you actually check in your Heroes game you will see this.

And yeah those Protection spells aren't very good, but much better than crap like Disguise or Remove Obstacle.

Remove Obstacle can be handy in unique situations. Like if there's a crack between you and the enemy unit and you are slowed, you destroy the object and you are suddenly next to him while he's least expecting it. It seldom happens but that's what authentic spells are for.

Which proves only that you played little the game. All those spells are great in the right situation. Random maps vs AI are not relevant, try custom** to find out about true potential.

*Death ripple is the secret weapon vs hit and run, the best available after shackles.
**Special note to chinese mapmakers who brought the single game-play at superior level, allowing the use of all spells efficiently.

in TEW 4, i could only beat the prison guards without losing any devils by casting Quicksand three times in a row and creating a fox hole which i hide in one turn and kill guards the next turn. Otherwise you lose at least one devil and Pasis catches up before you sail. Was there any other way?

No need for quick sand in such easy battle. Quick sand is for huge battles, in that one you can just cast slow from second round, and use natural obstacles and wait ability to your advantage. But if it helped you, then good choice.
