Man dies on NYC subway tracks...

article....

So this dude gets pushed, he's trying to claw his way back up, the train is getting closer and this Snow of a human being instead of pulling the guy up, takes a few photos, sells them to the post, and dude's death is on the front page for his family to see....

I would sue the hell out of them.... Disgusting as snow....

i saw the photo he took (it's not in the link), he's not close enough to save the victim. so to say he's taking a photo instead of pulling him up is misleading.

If he was more physically fit he could have made it back up in time. I'm glad he's dead.

edit: No but seriously, videos about weird/bad **** that happens at large public transportation areas is old news. People - probably most of us here included - suck at reacting. I'm not sure what else there is to say.

I had heard about this before and seen the picture. Sure, he is clearly to far away to help but he had the nerve to take a perfect photo. The lack of human emotion and respect is obvious from both the photographer and publisher. I heard he had the poor excuse that he was trying to warn the train with the camera flash but the picture and news post clearly shows that he wanted to seize the moment for personal gain. I do not understand how the publisher thought they could get away with this but I guess it is good that the murdered mans children now got a fresh photo so that they can remember him easier and imagine what a horrible death he had.

yeah he just had the time to take his camera and aim. I still think helping would have been faster.

(how many threads did we have about the bystanders effect?)

Indeed. Einstein would be dead too, but Vandamme not.

I was going to post this story in the apathy thread, but couldn't find it in the time frame that I had.

A question to you sally, so technically in France, would everyone within 100yards be charged for not assisting him?

Have no idea, the pic is showing an out of time frame, but in fact there is maybe less than one second before impact. I can get that no one had the sudden idea to jump and help in such short delay but what puzzles me too is that the guy took a picture instead, probably journalistic reflex. But then, why show in newspapers, what's the morale or idea behind?

It wasnt 100 yards though, it was on a subway platform so probably 5-10 yards and it wasnt the point, dude was thinking I can make money instead of saving life, and the newspapers posted it on the front page for his family to see as in - look this is how gruesome your dad's death was.. I say sue them for something, coz this is the post and if this is the msg they wanna send out into the world... its a horrible msg...

RL is not like movies. That man was >60 Kg at least and in extreme stress I guess. Would you take the risk in one second to heft him knowing that once he grips your hand, no way he will let it go?

So I would say is realistic that no one helped in such short delay.

more like psychopathic reflex. how can you stay calm enough to take a perfect picture, knowing that the guy is going to die before your eyes?

Arent journalists human vultures? That photo just solidifies the fact that journalists feed off from the misfortune of others.

Aside from that, this is real life people.
First rule: My pocket is more worth than anything you got, including your life!
This jerky move from that guy reminds me of a black humor movie. In a sense, its actually funny that people are even able to take photos in such a situation.

there's a spam facebook share that pops up every once in a while about that journalist who took the photo of the vulture and the kid suggesting he killed himself afterwards because of the picture. i got curious and checked it out, he did kill himself but in the suicide note there was nothing specific referring to the picture. they also made a biopic about him.

Yes, there is nothing wrong with a journalist to take such pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words is the old saying. Words can't adequately convey the horror of such settings as this picture does. It is the jornalist reporting on actual real world issues and real world issues are often not pretty things. But the tale often needs to be told.

Is a thousand words worth a human life or the respect of the deceased and his mourning family? Maybe you meant only the vulture picture but I fail to see how a man getting killed by a subway train is a real world issue or a tale to be told. If you did only mean the vulture picture then my words above can be ignored since I do not really know the background of that picture. There is no real excuse for what the subway photographer did but of course he can not be punished legally since he was not the one who murdered the man. The photographer was just on the scene and did something extremely inappropriate.

Guys, the only one to blame is the killer. Papers do what they have to, report news. As gruesome as the photo is, it focuses attention on a real public health problem. Most subway platforms have a hollow space underneath. This victim could possibly have saved himself by crawling under the platform or run the opposite side. Papers report he was plain drunk too, which explains he just stayed there like dumb.
