Duels don't need sim turn though, you could maybe play that.

he better play another game if it's just to play a bunch of duels on this game. Multiplayer is limited to 20% of the actual content right now (battle map). Without sim turn the rest is rubbish.

Duels take much less time, and if they are fun for him (they are for me), then you don't have to play another game. He's still having fun, that's the idea.
Of course, you may not want to buy the game, but I was under the impression you already had it.
