Since you mention it, they should BLAH HoMM2-ish again in the German version of HoMM 6, since I made sure, Ubi Germany got the H2-sound of them. No idea, wether they actually did it (I'm playing soundless, mostly), but it should be in, by all means.

That's by the way H3 art I didn't like at all, the Nosferatu style Vampire. The cartoony Dracula art of HoMM 2 was somewhat more appropriate.
I generally think that the cartoony style was better fitting than the "mature" stuff that followed: clunky Golems, for example. Zombies with flies buzzing around them, the dying animation of Bone Dragons, the iconic Dragons...

Anyway, we've now the super serious Ashan, and the problems with the brand are simply - the seriousness of Universe and the "maturity" of the Graphics. Gone is the lightness of HoMM 1 and 2 - and with it a lot of the charm. That, however, started already with HoMM 3.

Anyway - off-topic.

For upgrades, I don't think it makes sense to have Vampires that canNOT regenerate themselves via bloodsucking (Life Drain) - that's what makes them Vampires, right? It's like having Bowmen, using the strings of their bow as a melee weapon strangling their opponents, with the upgrade giving you shooting ability.

I prefer the "cartoony" art style as well (just not HoMM1 cartoony )

Yeah, life drain to me is the essential vampire ability.
Flying comes second, though it'd be weird to have unupgraded vampires
walk now that I'm used to them flying (and to some degree, "warping") about...

I don't like the bloodspattering in HoMM 1 either, even though at the time the dying "expressions" were quite, well, funny. HoMM 2's style was fine, though.

Changing in a bat and flying is the thing for Dracula-based vampires for sure - but Teleportation, seems to be a good thing as well when we have a different Vampire genesis, for example the Ashan one.

And that somewhat "cute" style was it, in my opinion, that lured the for this kind of game comparatively high percentage of female players to HoMM.

If I remember right, initial HoMM V art would have seen a return to the more cartoony style, if it hadn't been scrapped. In hindsight, going back there and NOT introducing 3D might have been WAY better, but if you know the Etherlords look, then Nival was probably the wrong developer for such an approach.

I wished they had the guts to consider that for HoMM 7 - if there will be one, that is - or for some spin-off game, whatever, Might and Magic: Commanders...

Well, when it comes to creature upgrades trees, I have a pretty strange system. (screw you, necros)

It's a mix of H4-H5-H6 systems.

You still have your Core, Elite and Champion units.
You have 2 creatures in each tier, but from Elite on, you'll only be able to build one of the dwellings in a given town. (they can be demolished, but the building can't be rebuilt for another week).

Additionally, each unit has three distinct upgrades, but again - you'll have to pick only one.

This may not work for all Heroes games, since I have a different combat system set up here, but it works for me.

I still hate how the alternate upgrade was only used in ToE. It had some decent potential. (for those who, obviously, like the unit upgrades. But IMHO, Heroes games without creature upgrades is...Maybe not bad, but slightly less "unique".)

However creature upgrades are done, external dwellings must be upgradable too. It's annoying to have all your slots full and not be able to hire the unupgraded version of a creature from an external dwelling because you have the upgraded version.

Irrelevant in Heroes IV, at least.

Just my two cents,
I don't like the upgrade system as well (most of the reasons that I have too are shared in the first post of this topic).

And my idea of units gaining experience is simple, every unit TYPE has its own XP pool. This means that when a stack of vampires has killed a pack of enemies they gain experience - not only that particular stack but all of your vampires through the map. And when a certain level of XP is reached all vampires are upgraded. This means that your hero will recruit more powerful units in time. All XP pools for every creatures are lost when a new region/map is reached (the units in the new region are untrained and need to gain levels again but if for some reason in a campaign a hero is back in an old region he has access to the veteran creatures).

All heroes can have certain abilities that boost the XP gain - such as an ability that gives certain minimum ammount of XP for all creatures to start, or another ability that gives +% XP boost after every battle, etc.

This prevents some difficulties for mixing stacks of the same creatures.

Rename the franchise Monsters of Might & Magic and you may be onto something.

I've never really seen the problem with creature XP. Oh you'd have to make it so that it doesn't overlap with either upgrades or hero-granted abilities, but beyond that, I'd say give it a go.

It wouldn't make much sense though, to have some angel go "Oh, apparently I can resurrect people.
Hey guys, guess what we can do? Be sure to tell everyone besides the opposing team!"

First they get XP, next thing you know they will demand to learn magic and lead their own armies. Ungrateful scum...

The way I see it, XP would affect only stats (attack, defences, and later on maybe damage, hp and speed too), so it would be left to upgrades to add abilities.

Well, I wasn't hoping for that kind of retoric, but anyway... this is exactly how humans build civilizations, few learn, many exploit that. And it is much better than what hell hounds would say when they learn you upgraded their kennels "That guy over there is paying us more wages, lets grow two more heads and gain no retaliation mass attack."

I agree with this post a bit.

I think it would be better if the upgrades are really worth the time and that you can upgrade your creatures at any time, not only in your city.

If you cut the upgrade system than maybe you could add in more different creatures in each town, maybe even 10 or 12 creatures in each town which you can give basic items to make them more powerful or let them gain new abilities on the battlefield.

If they did give the creatures ugprades again in HOMM7 I hope they will be very different from the non-upgraded creatures like a young pretty Vampire turns into a old, freaky and ugly Nosferatu in its upgrade gaining new abilities all together while also giving you a entirely new looking unit, not the same unit with another armor on or with minor differences.
