We have already discussed the amusing similarity of Thundax the Barbarian and the common Barbarian hero look.
This Heroes II feature has become common and native for every H2 player.

We tried to imagine how the Warlock hero would look in 'high resolution', and here's what we've got!

The Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Succession Wars Mod Team have already mentioned some allusions on the famous New World Computing CRPG series "Might and Magic".

Today we are proud and eager to share some new hero portraits with prototypes obviously familiar to Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven players. In the next mod release you will be able to see some of the MMVI characters in various qualities.

A tiny update concerning castle icons. The faction icons which were present there before were removed according to the results of poll sessions.

The next open mod release will feature these icons as a must.

We are creating our own VCMI version, the demo is already done. Don't waste time However, I don't yet say that I won't be up to contact you in future if you are really to help.

Our cities are different from original H2 ones. We add, change and improve, because original 640x480 is less than 800x600. So that I would not recommend to compare.

I do know about stolen DnD sprites. It was a pity to know - these fitted acceptably good to the game. I still don't have an idea who can be put to Sorceress 4th level instead of the Owlbear.

As for the 'army faction' - Forge (Cyborg faction specifically) would be better, but anyway it's not possible in terms of The Succession Wars Mod due to chronological, lore-wise and other various reasons. Maybe when I will have time I will create the extra faction for H2 using Project Ironfist as a platform. But for now it should stay as a pipe dream.

i don't see why you would replace it simply because it is a graphic from another game. if it fits visually, it fits visually. i will be replacing the WoG werewolf with a werewolf i found from another game(at least until i learn 3d). i may have to tinker with it to get it to look right, like whoever swapped the owlbear did, but i'm still going to use it.

if you think about it, most of the WoG graphics are from other games, as well as stuff from multiple object patches for HoMM3, on this very site...

this is why i don't understand any "taboo" when it comes to crossing game graphics. especially if they fit visually.

It's illegal to use graphics from a game as a mod for another game, unless otherwise stated.
On nexus site guys who do it are rewarded with ban.
However, Ubisoft doesn't care about it.

I can give you brief explanations if you want.

Firstly, it's cool to have the graphics of our own. It's the question of morale. People say here and there 'whoah, you draw so cool!' and I feel shame that it is not particularly me. I would use some graphics if the author allowed me to (gave a permission), but I would be grateful if this graphics is not used elsewhere. I can draw on my own. That's why it's not good for me to have stolen graphics from unrelated game. I feel okay only when we get converted portraits from other games of HMM and MM series because they are tightly connected. Like this one. These portraits are still in progress.





I don't know about Kivo's position on stealing graphics, but I am sure he does not like when his graphics are taken, especially without a credit to him in particular.


Secondly, we will be putting Beholder instead of Troglodyte to the Warlock. The current Troglodyte design has a spear, but no one can guess if he is a shooter. That confuses many people. Let's say - it does not fit completely. Also, its animation is too smooth (as well as the Owlbear's and Serpent's). Beholder is just more canonic due to Might and Magic VI.

Thirdly, the Owlbear of the Sorceresses is a hybrid. HMM2 can have hybrids only in a Warlock castle, it's the Warlock concept and it must be kept in mind. Warlock creates foul beasts to serve him. Minotaur, Centaur, Griffin are all the creations of Warlocks, and Agar in particular. Due to MMVI, Agar also created Beholders, Cockatrices and some other beasts as well. It's Warlock's credo.

Fourthly, Dungeons and Dragons is a VERY, VERY KNOWN game.



Secretly I always feel cheated, tricked and embarrassed when I reveal that some of new graphic assets for my favourite mod are stolen instead of being drawn by the team itself.

It's just not professional.



And as a side note, the graphics for WoG 3.58f are horrible. The majority of drafts should belong to Possible Creature thread here on HC, not the full-concept addon for Heroes III. This really makes many people upset while they try WoG first time. Luckily, the situation in 3.59 is going to change.

there were a couple of graphics-related things that the WoG team did that i wasn't into, but for the most part, they did good with their own hybrid creatures, let alone dwellings, objects, etc. it's better than what any other modder did before WoG.

i thought it was ok to use graphics as long as you have the game, or if you changed something enough that it didn't look immediately ripped off from another artist? that was the impression i had, anyway. i guess it just boils down to personal preference.

i never considered the back-story behind warlocks. i guess that is why you have some hybrids in the HoMM3 Fortress as well, as they have witches for heroes...

Well, we don't have the 100% identical assets, they are all fixed to fit the HMM2 graphics. Only the Palm Kingdoms graphics are taken as-is, and I got permission for using a few their old assets, so they will be present.

The portraits are being changed now, we threw away all old frankenstein or stolen designs. You can check some new WIP ones on our Russian forum branch.

As for the WoG - still its main importance is in ERM and overall modding opportunities. Graphics is not WoG's strong point. Fortunately, it can be changed in WoG-based mods, like we all do in our own peculiar ways.
