Just played this, it's beautiful. There are still some things to be fixed (graphics to be H2-ized, mainly), but it brings back the best things about H2, the music and art style.

Are the spelling mistakes going to be fixed? Gnom->Gnome, Gipsy->Gypsy, etc.

You will see a ton of changes in the next release. A much closer to H2 interface, improved buttons/icons, townscreens, creatures etc. But also balance which is another important part. A large map pack is also coming, with maps from H2 and H1 also, even XL sized maps with it. Random maps will also be more filled with H2 objects.

As for spelling mistakes, the hero biographies are mostly fixed and you can spell both Gipsy and Gypsy. It gets people confused all the time.

Brand new hero bios are still in development, currently there are only Russian variants for the most of them. These bios are supposed to be fully satisfying the lore and providing new interesting info about HMMII heroes, without lame copying H3 bios.

As for the Gnoms/Gnomes, they are unlikely to be present in the final release anyway. They are too much alike with Goblins. There is a discussion on one of the mod-dedicated forums which result in a Wererat as a 1st level for the swamp castle. But not sure for now.

I was really sceptical about this mod when it first appeared here, but now, after seeing the screenshots I can say that it's looking rather nice.

Years have gone since the mod was started. Also, even now there are too few things which fully satisfy us. Further screenshots will be more optimistic.

We are currently working on improving the overall look of the towncreens. Here is the old mod's Knight Townscreen version and the most recent one, nearing completion. We changed the Crossbowman/Marksman dwelling, from the fields to the building by the castle and also the Town Hall, which is still in progress.

For marksman the second version does not suggest archery at all... Maybe a compromise between the 2?

why can't they improve on the old work? i think it looks fantastic, and makes the game more fresh. i don't see why anyone would knock that...

so, macron, who in this project pissed you off? because you're jumping around now. first HotA, then Forge, now Succession Wars?

(i may be mistaken about you as far as Forge goes, i don't know)

I think it might be because town screens in H2 are smaller and don't have 4-leveled town hall, resource silos, have one creature well less than H3 towns. In SW Beta town screens already had all these "new" dwellings made.
I am not against it, I just think in terms of management (it's about first make things absent, than remake other things)

Well, if the old work needs improving, why jump onto something new? We need to finish one thing first, before moving onto another, otherwise it all would be a complete mess. Don't you worry, we know what we are doing. I worked on this mod for about 4 years, most of my work I did this year, therefore I definitely won't get bored or tired. Working on the mod is my hobby and so I do stuff on it in my free time, because I enjoy it.


We would want to move on to Inferno, yet the basics have to be done first. We did not change the "Classic Townscreens". H2 townscreens were much smaller, therefore we have to fit some other objects to fill the townscreen. Actually now, the Mage Guild is where it should have been in the first place, though some buildings have their position changed slightly. There are many misplaced pixels in the old townscreens, some buildings were even copied and rotated to make them seem bigger. Look at the old screen marketplace for example. You also cannot simply enlarge the building, because all the pixels would double in some places and it will look horrible. There were also shading and perspective issues, which also had to be fixed.

What you are saying sounds similar to what mister_kalu said and did. Just look at the Gipsy townscreen, which he and the previous team made - it explains everything.

As for the new Crossbowman dwelling,

1) classic HMM3 dwellings for Archers and Swordsmen do not suggest their specialties at all either.

2) Our dwelling will be most probably called Outpost or something, and will surely represent a somewhat analog of HMM3 Archer dwelling.

3) We still have small targets near the dwelling which ultimately indicate that this dwelling does not belong to Red Dragons.

4) Old dwelling was very cheap and small.


As for the additional objects: HMM3 towns had plenty. HMM2 did not just because 640x480 was easier to fill. In our case, 800x600 is a way wider space. Moreover, it's just beautiful and more atmospheric, when you look e.g. on the new Peasant hut which has the hay, plains and other stuff.

As for the old townscreen, we cannot look at it with seriousness anymore. All old townscreens have their buildings scattered randomly, not fitting to the environment.

As for Macron's opposing way of thoughts against perfectionism, I gotta say don't worry, because this version of the townscreen is very close to final. Only a few things must be added/reworked. That's why I am pleased to what we are doing - finally some things will be left as complete.
Inferno town is a way too much effort for now, it will delay the next mod version for other 6 months or even more. It's completely undone, we've got nothing to show except some rough drafts.


As for the Gipsy townscreen, pretty sure Macron thinks it's perfect.

In some point it is the plan. In future we plan not only to convert classic HMM2 campaigns, but also create the new ones with plot dedicated to the events pre-dating the story of MMVI: The Mandate of Heaven, and probably being in the same time too. Also, the further story of Enroth surely will need revealing - Enroth is not only Roland and Catherine who move from one continent to another. So that the point is to make the mod unique, like HotA is is with its campaigns and such stuff.

We probably will stay with Era till the end, but I would vote for additional versions for VCMI, WoG 3.59 or even standalone version like HotA is (preferable for additional version, because it's a perfect form to advertise the project for its easiness of installation and convenience of use). But in all cases the mod will save more optionality, because it's wog based. Need a programmer to do all that, though.

It's quite good and fits perfectly to HMM2 neutral creatures populating it.
Only Grail is not fitting it at all (in other towns there are places for standard HMM3 grails not drawn, but not here - rainbow is out of place.
Of cause, you wrote that lineup will be totally changed, and you want townscreen to change also.
So there will be 2 towns for each faction, and it will be possible to fight old Gypsy against new Gypsy
