20 Factions of HoMM

Well, this here's the results of an on-off timewaster I've been doing for the past years,
and now I think the project is finally finished.
Basically I wanted to see how many factions I could come up with,
without having them be too contrived (dunno if I actually succeeded there).
There are 20 in all, which you could argue would be impossible to balance,
but creating a ground-breaking new system or vision for HoMM wasn't really my goal here.
I may write something about the different factions and the thought process behind them later.

Ask away and I'll do my best to explain.
A select few are original but based on old creature artwork.

The Orconha for instance, is based on the Dragon Golem artwork from HIV.
It's best described as a 'draconic spider-mare' with a constant grin on its face.
Before I knew it was a machine, I used to think the dragon golem was something entirely different.
I don't remember when I came up with the name, but I remember it being a stupid combination of arachnid and corona.

Mostly this was an exercise in trying to not reuse names and titles such as 'lord' and 'monument' too often,
which I've never been a fan of.
Then again, I don't particularly care about upgraded buildings receiving a name change either.

Well, then for the names I don't iunderstand: (most times, I gave only the base creature but do not understand the upgraded one's name either)
-Peryton
-Intulo
-Houngan
-Alerion Bird
-Mistflarden (Spoken and than interpreted as if it was German, it sounds like a rather rude curse. )
-Yasha
-...is the Hebbin anything snakelike?
-Drude (Sounds like a hash-smoking druid: "Hey Dude, I'm a Drude, YO!" )
-Rime Thurse
-Grue
-Kongamato
-Auspex

aldo, some which I don't like too much:
-Diatryma...why sucha weird name for a giant walking bird?
-Conflux in...never liked the idea of the elements fighting together...
-Minotaur as Tier 6 seems a bit strong
-Gamma gazer sounds not good to me
-The forge. Well, not sure about it being SO futuristic.

Peryton - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peryton
Was included because the Acropolis needed a flying creature,
and since the faction is partially based on Atlantis, why not include a creature that is said to have lived there?

Intulo - http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Intulo
Is just IMO better substitute for the generic lizard-man name.
It's basically the same.

Houngan - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houngan
A male priest in Haitian Vodou culture. I revile both the titles houngan and bokor because they are part of a religion which I do not want to offend.
Moreover, I only just learned that houngan only refer to males.
Which is a shame because I wanted this creature to be female, be it either lizardwoman or 'proud, black woman' (the former is probably more PC).
I'm open for other suggestions here.

Alerion Bird - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalerion
Another name for the Avalerion Bird.
I originally planned to have the upgrade be Avalerion,
but I discarded it since the names are too similar to another.

Mistflarden - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witte_Wieven
Hope the connotations aren't too unfortunate.
I needed a easily pronounced (for the English) name for the sylph upgrade and Witte Wieven is a mouthfull.
Problem is, they're not exactly evil.
Open for suggestions again.

Yaksha - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaksha
I needed a weak creature for the 'oriental' Palace faction.
These seemed to fit the most. The Yakshini is one of the rare, female upgrades.

Hebbin - You got me
So the thing is, again, I didn't want to use a generic name such as Snake Man, so I had to borrow this.
Mad props to whoever came up with it tho.

Drude - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drude
They're actually more like Trudes, but I liked Drude better.
They're fliers, and clad in a feathery dress.

Rime Thurse - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6tunn
They're frost giants. I already have giants in another faction,
so I had to take creative liberties. The upgrade is fire giants.

Grue - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grue_%28monster%29
Oh come on, you don't know what a Grue is?! For shame, Jir

Kongamato - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kongamato
A cryptid, just like the paokai.
I challenge anyone to come up with a better name for an upgrade because I really tried my best.

Auspex - http://www.thefreedictionary.com/auspex
They're kind of druid-like, and I already used Druid as a class name.
I couldn't have druid as a unit, as I've already used the words 'mystic' and 'elder' elsewhere.

Quote:
Diatryma...why sucha weird name for a giant walking bird?
Because it's the best name for a giant walking bird.
Or do you prefer Gastornis? The upgraded crature's name is just dire tho.

Quote:
Conflux in...never liked the idea of the elements fighting together...
Well as I wrote, I'm not trying to create anything new and groundbreaking here.
I liked the faction and that's that.

Quote:
Minotaur as Tier 6 seems a bit strong
My minotaurs are really big

Quote:
Gamma gazer sounds not good to me
Can't use beholder. Gamma Gazer is a creature from one of the M&M RPG games.
Alternative suggestions are welcome.

Quote:
The forge. Well, not sure about it being SO futuristic.
I haven't had the time (and bother) to write anything about the factions,
but the forge is basically dimension jumpers from an alternate timeline where everything but bullets are invented (that is the grail).
I didn't like the original vision as it was essentially ripping of the Borg and recycling creatures from other factions.

woah thats really much.

I won't give my opinion on everything but here are some of my thoughts:
About the hebbin, what is it meant to be?You say something like a snake man,but do you mean snake man like a naga or more like someone who sends snakes after his targets?

Also I think werewolf and vampire should be both tier 4,simply for being werewolf and vampire^^

Demon as a creature sounds kinda lame,it is like including a creature called human(the upgrade is also the word for demon in just a different language if I am not wrong). How about something different?Like spawn of legion or allu(faceless demons from some mythology, forgot what they were from xD) or maybe ker,the incarnation of the brutal death from greek myths?

overall I also would recommend less dragons or maybe different kinds of dragons(if you didn't thought of them that way already),for example instead of just green/gold dragon,azure/crystal dragon and so on,why not make only one of them european dragons(with wings and so on),while another one is a lindwurm(serpentine dragon with only front claws) or a dragon without wings,or a serpentine dragon with wings.

Unlike, the naga, which looks like it did in H3, the hebbin looks more like a snake with one pair of arms.
Its looks are inspired by the snakemen in Champions of Zulula, I have an image of one here.
My version is more orange though.

Quote:

I agree, I just couldn't come up with abilities that measure up to the vampire.
I liken the werewolf's role in this to that of the demon in H3, even if I personally prefer werewolves over vampires.

Quote:

You're not wrong. But you have to agree it's more subtle than some of H6 sanctuary's creatures/upgrades
I guess I just liked the demon design in H3 so much that I decided to include it.

Quote:

Let's see... I already have a creature called Spawn and it'd be kinda weird to encounter a legion of Legions.
Allu doesn't sound so good in English, IMO, and Ker just doesn't sound "demonic" enough.
How about I drop the name Demon and instead use Shedim and a variation thereof for the upgrade? Exalted Shedim or something like that?

Quote:

That was purely intentional.
It borders on parody and utter ridiculousness, but I wanted to include as many of the old creatures as possible.
I'll qive you quick rundown of my thought process:

What Red and Black dragons have in common is greed.
Famous examples are Smaug and Fafnir, respectively.
They are typical western-looking dragons, but the Blackie has more of the "eastern flair" you see in H2.

The Black dragon needs a good counterpart: Enter the Gold Dragon.
Gold is a better color upgrade (than white) for the Green Dragon.
Green is the most common color for a dragon in fairy tales, so it felt natural to include it.
Emerald and gold are both minerals to some degree,
but emerald is a moutfull, so I dropped it in favor of Gold.
They too are typical western dragons.

Mecha Dragons and Panser Dragons are based on the Dragon Golem of H4.
After doing some research on dragons, the quirky forge engineers come up with their own silly version of the real thing.
These dragons are too heavy to fly and are ground units.

Crystal Dragons and Azure Dragons are included for no other reason than their being in H3,
as well as the fact that coming up with units for Rampart was mighty difficult.
It's probably my least favorite faction for that reason.
Unlike the red/green/gold/black dragons, the crystal/azure dragons stand on all four legs.

Bone Dragons are iconic in the HoMM franchise so naturally they had to be included.

Faerie Dragons were in H3 and H4.
Uh, I just think they're cool.

Celestial/Heavenly Dragons are "asian influenced",
that is to say, they don't have wings, yet they hover.
They also don't make any sound, but are instead accompanied with their
own leitmotifs, consisting of various percussion instruments.
They look like Chinese dragons.

Quote:
why not make only one of them european dragons(with wings and so on),while another one is a lindwurm(serpentine dragon with only front claws) or a dragon without wings,or a serpentine dragon with wings.
That is essentially what the Wyvern and Dragon Fly are.
Now that I think of it, Lindwurm could be a good name of an unupgraded creature with Wyvern as an upgrade...

It's not only dragons I have too many of though,
there are also an awful lot of bird, giant humanoid and composite animal creatures.
Dragons are only the first you notice due to their shared name

I'll try to write something later this week about each faction so they don't just look like lists of names.
The goal is after all to have the factions and creature line-ups make sense to people other than me.

My variations...

Back in the days I had ideas for alternative/revised factions.

My original idea included 12 factions, which were:

Good: Haven, Sylvan, Academy and Keep (renamed Fortress)

Neutral: Stronghold, Fortress, Conflux (with Chinese Daoist flavor) and Citadel (Free Cities of the East as a society of merchant guilds)

Evil: Inferno, Necropolis, Dungeon and Covey (the last two are a split of the original Dungeon into an underground faction based on destructive magic and powerful monsters, and an aboveground, dark forest-dwelling Dark Elf faction focused on illusions and stealth)

My other idea was a bit different, as it is set in a different contient in Ashan:

Good: Castle (Haven, with a more badass Inquisition flavor),
Rampart (but with more bloodthirsty Elves and their nasty, thorny fey allies), Sanctuary

Neutral: Stronghold (with an arctic flavor- ice orcs and eskimo-style goblins!), Temple (basically Academy in the jungle, with Indian/SE Asian flavor), Cavern (basically a non-evil Dungeon, focused on earthern creatures)

Evil: Inferno (with a different Demonic roster though), Necropolis (with a strong desert Ancient Egypt flavor, sorta like Warhammer Tomb Kings), Keep (the other side of the equation- a Vampire faction!)

So these are my ideas for factions.

Though, I believe a game should have no more than 10 to keep it balanced and interesting. Maybe neutral mini-factions, or a big variety of creatures within a single faction (simialr to Lizard Warrior's suggestion).

'twas me, in fact. Back in the creational game.

In actuality, it was never meant to be spelled with two 'b's, but it appears I can't rely on Jiriki to type correctly. Alas - maybe it's better this way.
