I'm still in the dark about empire development. This seems very Civ-like but I just want to make sure. Which approach is more efficient, buildings, troops, expansions, workers?

As Joonas said, expanding is important. You have probably realized already that you can also build cities and not just conquer them.

Scouting is another important thing. Most of the classes(or factions) have some sort of cheap, flying early game unit that is mostly used for scouting. That way you can see what's your position on the map, where are the enemies, what are your weak spots, good neutral cities that might give you some quests and get on your side later, where are the resources so you can expand there etc.
You have to make a decision and choose your priorities well.

Later in the game, you should be still scouting what is happening on the map, you will choose researches that will help you develop your empire even better, be it some city/army upgrades or combat spells for your Leader.

The more you play, the more you will learn about units and their interactions, what units are great, what are bad and what are situational. After you establish your economy and have bunch of cities you will start to make and improve your army.

Best game knowledge comes from actual playing. Reading won't ever cut it, you have to experience things first hand if you want them to sink in.

Besides, our advice might only help too a point with you being such a blockhead.

Of course, but it is still easier to experience things when you know what are you looking for, and not looking around like headless chicken.

This game is awesome. Started a random map on very large and Lord difficulty. Custom character named Stevie "Morclaw" (lol, it can't have just one name?), human rogue with Explorer, Creation and Destruction. Collecting all the treasures on the map with 4 crows and destroying everything with my army back at home. I'm almost level 5 with the Leader and some other hero, Velvet. Things look cool.

However I don't get why leftover Production doesn't go to to the next queued building/unit. They could've even made the system so you can build more than just one thing per turn if your production was that high. But maybe that's going too far. Still, research carries over but production does not?! It's so frustrating to have one unit costing 70 but only 60 in production so it takes 2 turns where you lose 50 production in the second turn.

Then another thing is maximum tier 3 racial/specialization units, when some dwellings can make tier 4. I dunno, I wanted some cool tier 4 Rogue unit but...

Btw, the evolution concept is really cool, but useless after you build the building to recruit already evolved units. Evolution should be obtained uniquely through experience imo.

Evolution isn't useless, but it isn't something that will happen often.

About tiers, Rogue is the only one that doesn't have tier 4 units, but Shadow Stalker is probably the only tier 3 unit that can go toe-to-toe with tier 4's(or at least some of them). So, you were "unlucky" to pick Rogue as your first class.

You didn't play much, there is still a lot to learn. Later in the game there are researches that takes 10+ turns to get, but they improve your empire and army significantly, or are just really strong spells.

About researches and production, thing is you can already produce more units by having more cities, while there is only one "tab" for researches. And getting more researches in one turn will rarely happen(when you get that bonus research from treasure or some production building) and it will mostly happen in the early game when it happens as later your researches take quite a lot of turns to complete. On the other hand you will always have more production than needed for some buildings/units. It would feel awkward for me and unnecessary.

Research does NOT carry over (only, if you happen to find Research).

Production and Research NOT carrying over is an important game concept that makes producing and researching not a linear no-brainer, but forces you to think, whether it's really worth it to spend 2 days with producing, say, an Archer unit (that will cost 70), when you can produce two Irregulars or Infantry or even Scoundrels in that time.

Research follows the same pattern.

Of course there are always those who don't like that, but it forces you to think ahead, and it forces you to expand production beyond the "awkwardness level" (where you CAN produce the Archer in one turn and later a Cavalry or T2 Support, and later yet a T3.

The settling aspect will support that, should you play with the settler option on and few or no independent towns plus maybe many sites and things to visit, because that will create awesome settling places. (Mystical City upgrades add a lot - you know, if, for example explored Ancient Ruins are within town radius you can build the Pillar of Something that will give your Pikemen produced in that town additional oomph.)

And shouldn't you got it, get the Golden Realms expansion (and you may also want to look at the homepage of the game: the next expansion is due in Q1, which will feature the Necro Class and the Frostling race).

Oh, tier 3 killing tier 4? Me gusta!
Nah, I'm not unlucky, Rogue is just my style. Was my main and preferred class in WoW too. I like to backstab people give it to them from behind

Yea I went for settler, and I set Average independent towns and 8 AI and underground so there's lots of space. Also Many on resources and all map objects. And incidentally, I do have an Ancient Ruins inside my Throne city's domain

I reinstalled the game yesterday after RMZ told me about the Golden Realms expansion and I'm playing on it now. Can't wait for the next expansion too! (Q1?) It will be so hard to choose between Necro and Rogue, but I hear Necro has T4 Reapers I so want that.

Btw, something I discovered. Game seed resets after Save, so you can save/reload to get what you want from treasures. I built myself all the production buildings up until Master's Guild like that. Cheeky

Oh, and why are Leader combat spells available to research but also to skill with points? Ofc Imma use the points for something else!

And why aren't dungeons rechargeable? That would be a lot more fun. Say they wouldn't recharge if they were explored + on your domain, but like this it seems a waste.

The thing is, Necromancer is going to have units that are a bit different from your "usual" Undead that we see in other games. If you haven't seen the unit, go on the official site and take a look, there are also links here in this thread.

I will definitely play Necromancer and it will going to be my favorite class, to me game without some kind of Demons and Undead just feels incomplete, so I was waiting for this expansion for a long time now! I missed Undead from AoW 1 and 2, and had a bad taste in my mouth when they've said that Undead as faction won't be coming back, but with Necromancer class I think that this is even better.

Also, Frostlings were cool before(no pun intended), but now they are amazing. I like them a lot, but I just fear that they are going to be overpowered because of utility each unit will have compared to other factions.

The spells you research via Tech are your Class spells that are avilable for your Main hero ONLY, in this case Stevie Morclaw. The OTHER heroes - which may be of different class (but you can checkmark a all heroes from your starting class box in the RMg set-up menu) must get spells beyond those they start with and additional casting points via hero upgrades.

Gonna ask before I make a mistake. I have two heroes in one party, one's the Leader and the other one is the same class as my leader (Velvet). If both of them take party abilities, like Poison Knowledge for example, do they stack?

Why split them? I can have a frontline tank dps with my Leader, and a range spell support with the other one. That's the plan right now.

I've expected 1 new specialization in this expansion, maybe 2... but 3? Color me f*cking impressed and amazed. JJ is right, it is a torture to wait for this.

So ShadowBorn is Evil and has Fallen Angels,
Grey Guard is Neutral and has Chthonic Guard,
And Keeper of Peace is Good and has Arch Angels?

Em..... maybe a bit too cliche? Nevertheless I'm looking forward to it. Game's great.

Well, they only did what was in previous game, kind of. In AoW2 Dark Magic at highest level summoned Dark Angel, and Life Magic summoned Angel, which were 2 amazing level 4 units.

In AoW3 we don't have Dark and Life magic, but they finally introduced something that are good replacements and also have more potential since those are't magic schools.
