Star is global spell, Weapons - combat spell, Building must be city spell, what is a shovel? I guess it affects the global map as well as the star so what's the difference? Maybe that the effect is lasting?

I think these are not for just spells. In the video you can see a "produce martyr" research with a building icon and a "sanctuary" also with a building icon. The martyr is a theocrat special unit and the sanctuary might be a building.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they're not all spells. For example Divine Channeling IV looks like a passive skill. In AoW: SM roman numerals are used naming passive skills with multiple levels. You research Channeling I, Channeling II, Channeling III...

Buildings are civilization bonuses

New interview with lead dev Lennart Sas reveals the intial 6 races to be Humans, High Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Orcs and Draconians. Along with some other stuff as well.

I think we got a bit spoiled by past games. Six truly unique races is good by any standards. Especially if you combine that with 6 different classes. Now the choice to add Draconians in favor of the undead is another matter...

Well according to the video and the pictures there will be many undead units in the game from the beginning. They are probably summonable/neutral/mercenary units

My guess is they just wanted to have 2 neutrals, 2 good and 2 evil. So draconians are there instead of undead because of that.

12 races for the first game, 12 for the second, 6 for this one. With the different classes it makes for about the same amount of units that's true. But it will severly limit the politics on larger maps. Even if we still have 12 factions on map to make up for similar diplomacy as before the politics inside our faction won't be as diverse.
Most important is that it doesn't exactly add to the factor of immersion on epic maps. It's just fun going to war with 12 different races at the same time as trying to keep them from rebelling against you.

I bet it will be worse than AOW2
too much focus on graphics instead of good gameplay


AOW1 was and will always be the best AOW there is I still play it today and will never touch aow2 again horrid game

a DISGRACE compared to the first one

and i bet 3 will be worse too

Actually, based on the interview, keeping the population in check might not be that easy despite only having 6 races. What with your every action changing your alignment and conquering radically different cities.

I'm wondering will the races change alignment along with you. If you're playing a racist elf god, it would only make sense that your elves are racist too. And as such, don't get along with dwarves or elves.

Radically different cities, how come?

But it wasn't really about the difficulty, it was more about having to please 10 or so different races or face the consequences.

Six races only, because unlike Heroes of Might and Magic 3+, the game doesn't discourage mix&match approach and experimentation. In Heroes 1-2, you can mix any hero with any town and you're not missing anything. In Heroes 3, many specialties only work with units of the same town. Heroes IV restores experimentation. Heroes V, VI tie heroes very strongly to their towns.

In Age of Wonders III, you have 6 races (more to come) and there will be at least 5 leaders:
- Theocrat
- Warlord
- Sorcerer
- Dreadnought
- Rogue

So you have 5x6 = 30 combinations, at least. Recent Heroes games want you to have 1 combination. Obviously this will require more testing, and it's probably part of the reason why there will be only 6 races at the start.

By the way, leader type and player behavior is going to affect diplomacy in single player. There are dev posts on the forum, in particular check out the "FAQ" thread. One of them has said two races led by Theocrats will get along better. Also, there was no mention of racism but elves conquering and razing cities will see their reputation drop.
