thanks. i updated the latest shell again, and updated the screen.

i have all the best polished rocks i could find online, but i'm going to hold off on working on them until i finish the decorated mermaid reef(i almost forgot that that was my original goal with the shells update, lol).

-------
got the 1st five decorated reefs done. i'm having to add them one by one and test each for pixel errors that are coming up. i learned quickly to add shadows on the reef itself to make the shells stand out better.

i also learned to add the correct shadows for the starfish lying on the reef. duh.
-------
here're the 6 i have done so far(i may or may not finish them all tonight):

Your progress looks great fred

                                                                  ***

It’s with a heavy heart I’m announcing I lost my (first and only) wog map which I was working on for quite some time.
Long story short, I was negligent last time I made my system’s backup.
I could find some early screens, with many unfinished areas, as it’s all I have left. Since majority of the map is composed with Fred objects, I wanted to show him some of what I’ve done with it and finally decided to share these outdated screens in this thread.
I hope you don’t find it too bad mate.

The map evolved quite a bit since then but these are all the traces I have left.

It is kinda hard for me to start a new map from scratch all over again, but maybe next patch release will give me some motivation back, who knows.

You know that backups are usually not destructive, right?

@ galaad: that sucks, man. it looks like you put a lot of work into it. at least you have some screens to use as a guide; so there's that(it's not a complete loss, in other words). myself, i have backups of my backups. i still have all my original maps before wog, saved in different places and with different progress. if i lost any of my 3 campaign maps that i'm working on now, though, i'd go ballistic.

on the plus side, once i release 1.3, you may indeed be motivated to start again. also, don't forget about my campaign. once that's released, i have no doubt you'll be motivated to start building maps again.

thanks. i felt the same way. the ocean can be difficult to make engaging, which is why diversity in graphics and function is so important. one of the tasks i'm undertaking is making ocean versions of all the land objects(not the same graphics, but different ones). that greenish-blue arch you see there in the screen is a learning stone. i'm still unsure if i'm going to replace it or not. i'll be doing the same thing with all the generic land objects; as the sea is largely neglected(the hota team realized this, which is why they made their first town an ocean-based town, and made their own objects for the sea).

speaking of largely neglected terrains, i've been putting off my subterranean work(because i've found that i'll have to make water-bound stalagmites with both regular surf, and shaded surf; which is twice the work to animate); but when i pick it back up, you'll see the largely neglected underground become more engaging(with it's own versions of the generic land objects), as well. i have a whole bunch of neat stuff planned for the subterranean terrain.

as well as the planeswalker(space) terrain.

and that's not even getting into the undersea-area plans i have(coral reef mountains being one main thing, but that'll have to wait, as do most of my 3d plans, until i get out of college). i've even figured mostly how to layer everything, and make it work for a map visually(it'll just need some scripting help to complete the effect, but most of it i can do with graphics alone). hint: water caustics for the "ocean floor". which is one of the reasons i need reliable and actual-appearance visually transparent objects in the map editor(not the current version that is screwed all to hell when viewing in the editor).

@Galaad
good work, too bad you lost it.
Maybe start again with a very little map, like S size. It helps to get the motivation back. Don't aim for the project you have lost, it's gone. Start something new.

that's damn good advice. you can work on small pieces of the map, then copy+paste what you did to larger maps. so you can actually make progress without feeling like it's a huge undertaking. cut the work up into smaller pieces.

it'd be pretty interesting to make a map that way, actually. just copy+paste detailed smaller versions into a larger version, then go around filling the gaps. like constructing a puzzle.
--------

i have 24 polished stones ready to go for the beaches. i will most likely stop here, since atm they make a complete circle in the color-spectrum; which is what i was going for in the first place. once i make them into defs, i'll post another screen.

ok, made them into defs(and fixed their shadows).

the new/altered object count for 1.3 is now past 1,000.

currently working on swamp/jungle versions of the hota ponds, for one of my maps. i was doing the conversions the hard way(one by one), when all i had to do was put all the frames onto one image, and do all the work at once using the formula. silly me.

edit: done with those.

Can you make a package with new updates?

1.3 won't be too far away, i plan on releasing it before i go to college. it'll be the next thing i release, since the work i have to do for my most incomplete map(and the writing/events/polishing for the 3-map campaign itself) will take longer.

no prob.

---------
redid one old seashell, and added 5 new seashell graphics(replacing one existing). there are now 3 clam shells in the mix.

-------

made a proper flipped version of the original fountain of fortune, then recolored that to replace my old(flawed) flipped swampwater version:

i'm going to try to make frozen versions for the snow terrain next.

------
put the snow terrain fof's on the back burner for now(after i started some initial work. i think they'll turn out fine), to focus on something else i've been wanting to do for a long time: fix the homm2 excavation sites for new skeleton dwellings(since i don't care for even the fixed homm3hd version i made). once i get those done(i just need to add a decent ladder to them, since the old ones don't cut it), i'll post a screenshot of what the new ones looks like. i still have to fix the version with the wall ruins, though; and that may take longer, depending if i can use the same method that i used to re-angle the excavation digs, for the walls, too.

edit: after taking a break for awhile and then getting back to work, i'm still not done with the excavation sites. i did a lot of work on the ladders(i had worked on the angles, length, and one-pixel work for quite a while, only to discard nearly all that work. i did save the longer ladder length from an earlier frame, though) that i ended up not using(i wasn't satisfied with the sharper angle and pixel work i did). now, at least, the holes and ladders are done. the only thing left to do is, fix the walls. hopefully they won't be as labor-intensive as the holes and ladders were.

done:

----------------
currently prepping all the smaller smoking volcanoes(including the 2 smoking wog volcanoes and the homm2 version) to replace the smoke; using a shrunken version of the largest volcano's smoke(since i always thought the smaller smoke looked infantile compared to the larger smoke). i'm fixing all the volcano bases before adding the new smoke(since some of them are just as sub-par as the smoke itself).

--------------
tinkering with odds and ends. tweaked the rocklands patches again, and just finished with a pot of gold with a rainbow. i'm using it as a mystical garden:

--------------
did some work on the angel and supreme archangel dwellings. i think i got the original supreme archangel dwelling from here at hc(or maybe the df2 forum, i can't remember), but i don't know the author, so if anyone recognizes the upgraded dwelling that i did some work on, let me know and i'll credit them for their original work:

the archangel dwelling was based off of kurek's work for his altar of prophecies. thanks, avatar.

thanks, man. is kurek here at hc? if not, could you ask him if he wants a different version of his altar of prophecies?

------------------
i finally added gold coins to two open chests i had in my lod, and replaced another chest. now i only have one that doesn't look much like the others, but damned if i can find a decent replacement that looks workable when shrunk to size.

when/if i find a replacement for that, i will only need one more replacement, and i can have all the wog chests replaced.

the 3 new chests i just worked on:

Hi!
Kurek from Acidcave here. Please consider using something else. It took me 30 minutes to create this location, so please try making something simillar. If you wanted to use it, I would need to update my Cherub mod and paint something new now and, sadly, I have no time for that now.
