What is the current state of the game?
I've been away from Heroes for a while, but I've started playing five again in the past few days. What is the game like now? Primarily, I'm concerned with the balance, the performance (still buggy?), and the depth of gameplay. Additionally, I'm curious as to just what is going to be included in the new expansion pack. I see that they're adding Dungeon, and it looks a lot like the HoMM3 dungeon. Only one elf in sight, and the rest are all classic beasties; good stuff. But what else is going to be added? Any major changes? What about the custom map scene? Is there an RMG yet?
I don't care much about the story because I just play skirmish games, and I like the art style, so complaints about those are irrelevant to me.

Balance - Balance is rather OK, but somebody with "some" Duel experience would be a more relevant person to answer
Bugs - Those who have been facing major bugs (like Nvidia) still face them, those who have not (like me) do not encounter anything major
Depth of gameplay - This would be based on what do you mean by depth. The combat system is still OK, Map management and economic part is still off as it was, only with minor changes to building costs
Expansion pack - Apart from the faction: 2 new neutrals, a clasical rather large number of artifacts, some map objects. Sadly for many people No RMG. No major changes to the skill system. Almost no new abilities (except for dunegon racial ones).End a lot of dynasty stuff (You know, traits, DW, most likely DP).
Apart from the story (which you do not care that much about as you say) not much is known about new maps. But as usually, they are most likely to be based on the story ones.
Did I miss anything major?

If you didn't like the game one year ago, you still won't like it. The game hasn't changed, it's just more stable (if you downgrade your nvidia drivers).
Shades of Purple will only add Dungeon, a couple of creatures and ywo campaigns. Nothing fantastic ... it's just a disguised DLC.
No RMG will ever be added, no chance to see the map editor improved either.

I wont say from where, But I remember reading there are going to be atleast 3 new sets.. (thats 18 new artifacts)
Its logical, Even those DLC's had one, and you know how Ubi loves Artifact sets, So there must be atleast 2 new (For Realag and Vein) since they are both most probably might heroes, there should be atleast one more, connected to magic.
And do not forget how Heroes VI is scripted when it comes to artifacts, so there must be atleast 1 new "normal" artifact connected to the Dungeon racial abilite
Thats the minimum of 19 art. If it is enought for you that depends.
But I would personaly like less sets, and more "normal" or atleast make it so, that each metchant has 1 random set artifact in his shop.
