Viability of Grails

Alright, cool - all spells unlocked, 20% necromancy bonus, some stat upgrade during a siege - you can clearly see that some Grail buidlings are more useful than the others (*cough*Conflux*cough*).

But are they really that worthwhile in a long-term game?
While I haven't had a great opportunity to get a grail on a map larger than S, I can only imagine that getting it can be a real pain due to all the obelisks spread around the whole place.
Are they worth a hassle? Especially in a high-level game that can stretch over for well above 9 hours?

Someone enlighten me, please.

Are they worth the hassle ? The obelisks - no, they aren't. Get enough obelisks to learn on which screen the grail is. Then start digging via brute force. As far as I know the tiles already revealed can't have the grail, so every obelisk helps a little.

Brute force digging performed with several heroes is most effective on rich maps, but unfortunately these are the maps where the grail is going to have the smallest effect... unless it's some gamechanging ability like Conflux. Or you're desperately fighting off enemy attacks and the grail lets you to push forward. Actually, bringing the grail to Inferno if you're playing a Necropolis might be good in a perverse way (tons of imp stacks!)

The importance of the grail, as usual, depends on the map. A grail will have greater influence on a game if there's only two towns on the entire map. But that's kind of obvious.

I haven't played for long, but if I remember correctly, a few obelisks, view Earth, and digging a little left of center on the puzzle map, is usually sufficient to get the grail quickly. Since the grail is usually a little left of center it can be found in a few days tops. All you really need then is enough obelisk to identify the area of the grail sufficiently uniquely. On maps with a lot of buildings, a few landmarks and not very diverge terrain, this can be quite a challenge.

Not to mention that while the grail can change a stalemate, if you've to sac a week on it, you should probably only pursue it if it is a stalemate, or recognize if your opponent goes for it and try to use that to your advantage (i.e. take over your opponent's incomes).
