Didn't know the thing about not needng to bait traps, cool.

Do I run the risk of killing off the entire population if I hunt too much? I've always been letting at least 2 of them live just in case.

No, rabbits will always spawn as long as there are rabbit holes.  You can destroy rabbit holes with a shovel but I'd not recommend that unless there is one in your camp that you don't want, because you want tooth traps in your camp for instance.

Spiders will always respawn as long as the spider nest is there. I start off by setting traps a little bit in front of the webbing that I intend to enter to provoke them to come out.  When they leave the nest I run through the traps so when the spiders chase me they'll be caught in the traps. You need several layers of traps. If one gets through that one spider is easy to kill in a one on one battle. Then I'll check and reset the traps (the spiders entering the traps will automatically be killed by the traps when you check them) and enter the webbing again to get more spiders to come out. Rinse and repeat until there are no more spiders in the nest. You can farm the nest again the next day if you wish. Oh, when the nest is empty I move my traps into the webbing itself and have a row right up against the nest and a couple of rows behind them.  That way when spiders leave the nest when you are not there some will already be caught in the traps when you get there.

Beefalo are different though. If you wipe out the whole herd the herd is gone forever. They produce baby beefalo when they are in heat, which is once in the summer and once in the winter.

If you set bird traps you'll need to bait the bird traps with a seed but seeds are quite plentiful and of little food value. If you build a bird cage you can put a captured bird in it. Experiment with feeding the bird different vegetables and meat. You'll not need more than one bird cage unless you want more than one for decoration.

You can also build a bee box. A bee box requires one honeycomb, 2 boards, and 4 bees to build (the science machine will tell you that.) You'll need silk from spiders to build a bug net to catch the needed bees. You'll have to destroy a wild bee hive to get the honeycomb that you need for the bee box. You'll need to wear log armor and a football helment (needs a pig skin) or a beekeeper hat (needs silk) to keep you from taking too much damage from the bees.

The only thing you have to worry about is if you kill a lot of animals within a short time frame. Then you'll get a special encounter with Krampos. Whenever you kill an animal you get naughtiness points but naughtiness decays very rapidly. Below is a quote from the Don't Starve wiki that explains it. As you can see Kramposs is not likely to appear unless you are seeking the encounter, so no need to worry about killing rabbits you trap. Just bear in mind food spoils.

Oh, you can keep rabbits in a chest without killing them if you already have enough meat and are worried about spoilage. The rabbits will stay alive indefinitely in the chest.

Quote:

It takes 30-50 Naughtiness to summon Krampus, and the exact number is assigned randomly after every Krampus' spawn event. The Naughtiness is added when the player kills directly (including Traps) the following animals:

   Pig - 3 Naughtiness
   Beefalo - 4 Naughtiness
   Crow - 1 Naughtiness
   Redbird - 2 Naughtiness
   Snowbird - 2 Naughtiness
   Smallbird - 6 Naughtiness
   Smallish Tallbird - 6 Naughtiness
   Butterfly - 1 Naughtiness
   Rabbit / Beardling - 1 Naughtiness
   Tallbird - 2 Naughtiness

Naughtiness will also decay by 1 every minute if no naughty actions are performed. It does not appear that there are any nice actions available to the player besides waiting it out. The game does not show the exact Naughtiness number to the player.

The number of Krampuses spawned before day 51 will be 1, then 1 or 2 before day 101, and finally 2 to 3 after, provided they manage to spawn in a valid location. Naughty acts committed closer to threshold (<20) will create a unique hissing noise and the closer to threshold it gets, the sound becomes more of a distinct snarl.

I'll try and learn most of it by dying over and over, part of the charm of roguelikes

Yes, there is no teacher like death.

My Wilson is up over day 160 now. He has shaved several times now without the bug of no beard hairs he got from shaving the first time. The first time I used the razor by right clicking it in his inventory. The other times I've "dropped" the razor on him and had no problems. I don't know if that is relevant or not.

I've been experimenting with sanity(it was not in the game when I played the beta) but I'll not spoil anything for you. Interesting stuff.

There's no teacher like Christ, he's better than death. But I doubt He can help you with this game that much

Yes, but I was referring to learning in the game of Don't Starve. There is nothing like night falling on you as you are heading to your base only to realize you are out of grass or logs and not carrying a torch. Can you say, "perma-death?" If you did not learn the first time, when it happens a couple of times you'll get start to remember.

When you die your save-game is erased. Time to start over and see what you have learned.

Edited by Elodin at 21:15, 03 Jul 2013.

A new update comes out tomorrow, changing some of the characters and adding a new one, who is a lumberjack that turns into a werebeaver when certain conditions are met. The caves are not fully implemented yet, but the player is warned that the caves are beta before he chooses to go in them.

Clicky

I decided to start with all new characters after the update. Wickerbottom is about to start her second winter.  Her base is not quite as organized as usual, but is quite functional.
