So how am I to rent a flat?

Okay, typical whine thread from me, but this is something I just can't understand.

I earn exactly 494 $ per month atm, going by the current US dollar value. I'm to get a raise to 600$ after I get my Master's degree. 600$ is about average a Master can expect in Poland if he gets a job. Which is easier said than done.

Now, I enter a site with flats to rent, I see the prices, and I facepalm. Typical 30m^2, single room, somewhere at dead-and-forgotten suburbs - hey, nice price, 600$.

Wait, wat?

Am I really expected to pay 100% of my salary for a ****ty flat in the middle of nowhere?

This is something I can't understand. Who rents this? I literally don't know anyone around my age who earns much more than 600$. Maybe 700-800$ tops. This is still not enough to rent a flat & be able to buy food and electricity for the end of the month. Why are the prices so outrageously high when the payments are so ridiculously low?

You basically need to have a partner or a mate and rent a flat together. Otherwise? Nuh-uh. No way.

I really can't get over it. What a joke. Want to live alone? Need peace & quiet and you don't have a girlfriend/boyfriend? Well, it's nice to want, but that's all you can do.

it's BS.

I can't help you with this, mate. Hopefully in few months I'll be looking for better place to live, but not yet.

Anyway, why would you need a flat without girlfriend? Not much joy to sleep alone

You have to rent a bigger flat with 3 other persons. That's nothing new, right?

Renting a flat for 2+ people means that 2+ people should pay the rent (maybe not evenly, depends on what you agree about). If that can't happen - well, you're screwed in most cases. It's not much different in the southeastern ghettos of Europe.

The problem is, that generally small flats are disproportionally more expensive. When I was a student (about 30 years ago), a 30 sqm flat would have cost around 400 DM (I had about 650 in all). I ended up living in a 140 sqm flat with 3 other people, paying 150.

Finding the right flat takes a lot of time when you need to save as much rent money as possible. That's nothing new either. Depending on the public transport system you will have to consider outlying districts, where the rent is usually cheaper. Today, lots of people living in the outskirts of a city or even in an away town, have a bike to go to the next city train station and can take the bike with them into the train.

Mobility being the key aspect in today's job world anyway, you need to widen your approach to flat-renting anyway.

Implying I don't sleep alone at my parents' place

I'm a bit at loss here. Honestly, if something happened to my parents, it looks like I'd die from hunger in a month.

Two solutions:

a) Sacrifice for future generations (Utopia).
b) Move out as I did (Realist).

Sorry if none of you like, but as only a few people here, I was there 20 years ago and had to take a decision because nobody cared.

See Doomforge, although you barely have the money to pay rent, all you have to do is go to the nearest tree and pick up a girlfriend from the twigs.

it's no wonder flats to rent get built everywhere. that must be a ton of easy money for the owners. moreover they don't lose value with economic crisis.

Good advice from Corribus, but with 450/month don't expect too much.

Come over to America and I will take you in.  I need a good hard working Polish cleaner  I will be a strict landlady though and may take advantage of you.

However, if you can't come to the States (lol), you have my condolences.  You could however, hot foot it over to England, I hear they have plenty of room and at good prices.  But apart from those two options, the only other option to have is to get a few buddies to apartment share with you.  Tis the only way DF.

Doomforge mate, I know you do consistently whine about this subject and all for perfectly legitimate reasons however you're not the only one in this boat. England, especially London, is bloody expensive. Jobs do not provide enough money (unless you're a highly skilled worker) to be able to afford this extortionate prices for flats. Even flat sharing is bloody expensive. It's just the economy at the moment. Either that, or just move mate. It's little wonder why all the Polish are over in England atm.

Will, so how much do you pay for a flat in London in comparison to a regular salary?

Meroe, you know I'd totally clean you your place up So I might as well take the offer

I pay about 520 pounds and that includes everything except Electricity and Quarterly Gas Bills. I get about 1000 or so pound every 4 weeks from work. So I have about 500 or so left to be able to spend on other things however I don't get a lot to spend a lot on myself as I have to pay for travel, food and other things.

600 as a rent for one apartment at 30kvm, also means that its at the least 1000 for 60kvm at the same location. At the least 1500 for 90, etc.
A partner does not change that much.
