OK, thank you for targeting me.
I downloaded IM and found command:

mogrify -trim +repage -alpha Background <name of file>.png

ON test files it worked, so now results can be used.

I'm sorry this upsets me. If you know how to play H3 you can even play it in chinese. Really game mechanics are the same and langage is no barrier for a mod that adds a town.

My answer is yes yes yes...



1) Is it possible to add new creatures without removing old ones? And if so, is there a hardcoded limit?

Yes. I didn´t find the limit until now. I am at the #256 creature with ametyst plugin.

2) Are the creature special abilities (like the double damage of the Dread Knight and Death Stare of the Mighty Gorgon) hardcoded?

Some of them, but there are simple ways to use them.

3) Can new creature special abilities be added?

Yes

4) Can new grail types be added?

yes

5) Can new towns be added without removing old ones?

yes, but it is very complicated. The "Dragon Peaks" mod will help.

6) Can new hero abilities be added?

YEs

7) Can new heroes be added without removing old ones?

Don´t no

8) Can a creature be given a spellbook, like in later Heroes games?

Yes, but it will take some work.

9) Is it possible to do extensive editing without using the WoG mod?

I've found program Mon Power, (https://sites.google.com/site/sergroj/wog/),
that calculates these values based on hit points/damage/attack/defence.
There said AI/Fight values are close to standard for standard creatures.
But there are no sources or formulas of calc.

How did Grove/HOTA creators set these values for their monsters, who knows?

I need these formulas as soon as possible, cause I wrote some pure program for batch-editing AI/Fight Values for jsons (VCMI), and want to put it to action

Well, wog has the command to return all monsters map and fight values.

!#MA:F#/?$ Monster # (Format C) has a Fight value of $.
!#MA:H#/?$      has an Adventure Map High of $
!#MA:I#/?$      has an AI value of $.

Don't know if can help but using a DO loop and writing results to an ini file should give all.

You can just open ZCRTRAIT.txt and read all these values, as smart people do.

I even saved a spreadsheet.

You have read me not warningly.
I'm talking not about AI/Fight values for standard monsters.
I'm talking about way to calculate AI/Fight values for new monsters, based on their new parameters.

It returns only values that are written in table for monsters.
It doesn't calculate them.

When in doubt, interpolate.
Hard to tell if game will break if you set the value of your dragon to 3600 instead of 3547, for example.

Also, it seems that values on right were calculated first and then fixed . values on the right seem more suitable, for example Grand Elves and Vampire Lords got huge boost thanks to their usefulness. So 3DO was not so smart in first place, either.
