Duel of Champions: NO-RARE tournament:

- UPDATED RULES at page 6
- Round 2 master post at page 8
- ROUND 2 IS OVER

op:
Quote:
After some time thinking (and after consulting Elvin :-P) I decided it is now the right time to introduce this Idea.

In the near future I would like to organize a tournament in DoC, but at the same time make it accessable to everybody. With a huge difference in skill and cards, the best idea would be to make a NO-Rare tournament. For now this topic is for the pre-tournament discussion and is aimed to get some feedback from potential participants. Anything you would like to discuss goes here (rules, ideas, problems, when would you have time etc.)

What is this?
For those who never played a TCG, a NO-RARE tournament is a normal tournament with the exception that no player is allowed to use rare cards. In the case of DoC this would mean Epic cards as well. This way the colection of veterans with their 4 Pao deathseekers and 4 Dark assasins is of no use, and even newcomers can make a good deck from the few cards they have.

The Rules
Lets keep it simple
- No rare cards (blue ones) this also goes for events!
- No epic cards (orange ones)
- No achievement heroes (Ariana, Krag Hack, Keiran, Pharis etc...)

Advantages
Apart this format of tournament being more accessible to newcomers and low level players, who do not have thousands of cards, it's IMHO also more attractive.
Think about it, no DA rush, no Puppet master controle deck, no OTK's, no Armagedon etc.. Sure we lose acces to some fun cards but I think it will be fun anyway, especialy with Herold out.

Disadvantages
If you think of any, let me know;-)

FORMAT
The main topic of this discussion is HOW SHOULD THE TOURNAMENT BE PLAYED.
There are two basic options.

We could make a custom Swiss tournament
+ easy to create
+ no problems with matching players
- All would have to be online at one time
- Only 8-16-32 player option
- Only one deck could be used

Or we could make a forum based tournament where people would have few days to play their matches and give us the result
+ Time freedom
+ Would allow a 2 out of 3 wins system
+ No limits to the number participating players
+ Options to change decks between games
- Organization would be a bit harder
- Would most probably take a larger time span

Breaking the rules
It would be to inconvenient to force people to send their card list befor every match so I think we can skipp this.
At the same time lets keep it simple. The game has a build-in replay system. If the defeated player has a problem (Opponent used a banned card) just send us a replay and most probably It will result in a contumacious victory.

??WHEN??
Even if this is one of the topics here, let's start with idea that the first round could start in the weekend of the 2nd week of June.

I hope some people here enjoy DoC as much as I do and we will find enough people to participate

This is gonna be so much fun No rares should not only provide better balance but also break the pattern of overused cards.

Wow, nice! I just created a new Inferno deck(fresh start, got a lot more in few hours than my old Inferno that I've built for weeks ).

And I am on "vacation" for first two weeks of June, so I am basically free!

Really looking forward to it.

I'd say disallow changing decks for the tournaments, that would immediately favour high-level players who have many cards and can have multiple decks suited for different opponents. It's disallowed in most card game tournaments.

Better to let us try and create as balanced decks as possible

Also I prefer the second option I think... we won't become too many I suspect so organizing likely won't be too difficult.

I think sticking to one deck the whole event would be to much. How about no changings of deck in the current match (1-3 duels)??

I like option 2 but with no deck changing (i.e. once you choose your deck you must stick with it).

@Adrius: To tell the truth, I'm not sure what deck to use, and I want to try more of them.
An orc deck, a Sanctuary deck a Haven deck. The only thing I'm sure about is I don't want to play necro.
So I would like to change decks against different peopleBut if the majority would like to stick to one deck then that is the way it will be (We have 2 for one deck 1 for deck freedom between matches))

For fun of course? I don't have a chance to win, my best deck is the one I made yesterday in 3-4 hours on a new account. It also got the best cards for the deck, but I almost don't have any of the Void Rising cards, and probably won't have any of the Herald cards soon, since I don't have time for grinding.

I will still probably play, except if I got something more important.

I think waiting for Herold is wasting time. So lets move on.

Atleast some people gave their opinions. Based on this the following muster will most probably be used.

A Forum based Tournament:
(Oponents and result will be posted here in this topic)
A Limitation in deck
(At the start all players will name one or two decks that they will use, no other are allowed)

System
(This is just a purposal now)
Based on the number of players I would make 2-4 groups, in these all would play against each other and the best 2 of each groups would then have a small final.
Opinions?

Yeah let's go for it. The way this is going herald might not even be ready on Monday

I don't really mind but why should we be limited to 2 decks only? And what about making variations of them as poly said. The more options the better if you ask me. As long as nobody uses rare/epic cards there aren't any exploits I can think of.

If we are going with groups I'd prefer to make them small so that each group will finish fast. If there are many people in the group, 3 games against each would take too long and would be harder to arrange games.

That would be a good topic for a discussion.
It would again be related to a general agreement here. I would honestly be against.
Or maybe some limits, like no change of the Hero, or a Side-deck listed with the registerd deck?
Or we could just limit each player to a faction.

@Groups:
I was thinking about 4-6 players.

Are we limited to just one account or? Just wondering, probably will play from one account since other deck on another account is not really finished.

And what about Herald cards? If Expansion is out by then, could we use those cards too?

I received a question how do I imagine this to work so…..

DoC - No-RARE tournament system.
(I hope this will be understandable)

Based on their numbers, the players taking part in this tournament will be divided into groups of 4 or 5 (Max 6).

In these groups each player will play one tournament match with every other player.
Example: If a group will have 4 players, each of them will play 3 games with a different opponent. (A total  of 6 matches will be played in a group this way).

Each match consists of 2-3 games. The player who wins 2 out of 3 games is the winner of that match.
(One of the players should alway post the results on the forum.)

The 2 best players from each group will then have a finale in the clasical spider system. (These games will be also played in 2 out of 3)

As for how long I think this tournament will take.
Basically I think we could manage it in one day, but to be realistic, if everybody playes one game a day, weekend for the finals and one day free as a reserve, We should be able to finish in one week. (2 weeks at max.)

@ RMZ1989
Since I usually do not have more then one account, I did not consider this as an option, but from my logic, if we would allow only on deck, this would be true even for decks on other accounts.
So lets put it this way, at the start of the tournament you give your nickname, and under this nickname you should play. You could change it in the next round, but in one round, you should play from only one account

!!!DECK RULES!!!
I think this is the most important topic we need to agree on. We have several options so please everybody state their opinion.

Extrem options:
1: Full freedom (Everybody can use any deck that does not break the No-Rare/Special Hero rule)
2: Full restriction (Only one deck can be played, and no changes can be done to it during one tournament)

Something in between
3: Side decks (players will send a list of their deck and a list of ?20? cards, The first game of a match must be played with the original deck, changes can be done between in other games)
4: Hero LOCK (Cards in a deck can be changed freely throughout the tournament, but the hero must be the same)
5: Faction LOCK (Same as „Hero LOCK“ with difference that heroes can be changed, but only for those of the same faction (ex: Stronghold))
6: One out of two (players will submit 2 decks from which they are free to choose each match)
7: „Other ideas?“

Side note: With the exceptions of „Hero LOCK“ and „Side decks“ options, I think changes during one match should not be allowed in generally.

HEROLD CARDS
Since my goal is to start in two weeks(14th june), and I hope Herold will be out in that time, everybody is free to use cards from this expansion that are common, uncommon or heroes.
If by any chance Ubi would not publish the expansion  by the time we would start, the use of Herold cards would be limited by the DECK rules (look one point up)

Great, I am all for it. When I think about it, I will probably play just with one deck on one account, so how many decks we are allowed to play doesn't really matter to me.

And Herald will be today!
