How new towns could be crafted...
Looking at the post regarding the idea of a Dark Elf town for the expansion (or HoMM5), I noticed someone had the concern of how to get around the strictures of the magic system (five elemental, one without magic).
Well, aside from one town with all five magic types in lesser quantities (Conflux reprise?), I think another possibility is to have another set of five towns...only this time, instead of having the two aligned elements for support, they'll have the two OPPOSITIONAL elements for support. Or rather, two elements containing the element they both oppose. Hence...
--(Life), Death, Chaos
--(Order), Chaos, Nature
--Life, (Death), Nature
--Life, Order, (Chaos)
--Order, Death, (Nature)
If we can weave some sort of theme to each of those five...
For an example, I'm going to try to do something with the death-containing town (i.e. life/nature composite).
Town name: Enclave
Purpose: This town is full of the Fae. Fae are, like the Kreegans, mystic spacefarers, but are more interested in protecting balances than in dominating and destroying everything. It's been a long time since they've had to intervene in one of the Elders' (or whatever the crafters of the Might and Magic worlds are called) experiments, but the Reckoning definitely got their attention. Fae are suspicious of other races, whom they considered less than dedicated to the life-death balance, but do not actually hate them. The Fae specialize in the invocation of fates--they are not particularly powerful in sheer combat, but they get around it with all the status change they cause.
Might hero: Judge
Magic hero: Thaumaturgist (lit. "wonder worker")
Creatures (I haven't worked out all the abilities, just names. I wish I could find descriptors of all the creature powers...):
L1: Bakemono, Sylph
L2: Tengu (can teleport any unit, friend or foe), Sidhe
L3: Kitsune, Dryad (can summon plant beings, or banish any sufficiently small group of enemy summoneds, the maximum size depending on the summoneds' level)
L4: Nue, Dullahan
{notices the odd looks} Well, tengu, kitsune, etc. were essentially Japanese analogs to European faeries. Given how varied the latter were, I couldn't help but think that the Japanese and European entities might be kin...

Well, fortunately we do NOT have perfect consonance with D&D paradigms. No one's gotten petrified by a Gorgon yet...
While going through the sorts of creatures that might fit in, I came up with an idea for the cockatrice. Only this is the cockatrice from the medieval bestiaries, not the D&D cockatrice. In this case, the cockatrice is a crested serpent. The power of its gaze is to cause a measure of spontaneous combustion in its foes. The game effect is that a unit of cockatrices has a chance of causing such terrible pain in the ignited that the latter are slowed and only do half damage. On a side note, basilisks and cockatrices despise each other (all right, in the bestiaries, basilisks and cockatrices were the same creature, but I thought I might as well go along with the idea that there were two variations--one that caused instantaneous death, one that caused spontaneous combustion), and so do 150% damage to each other. Furthermore, basilisks cannot petrify cockatrices, and cockatrices cannot burn basilisks.
As for my wish list...
--Kobolds (not necessarily evil)
--Sylphs
--Salamanders
--Undines
--Dullahans (they were very powerful unseelie faeries in Irish lore. The messengers of the death god, they took the appearance of horsemen carrying their heads under their shoulders. The heads of dullahans could see any distance with perfect clarity. They could be repelled by showing gold--even as much as a gold pin caused them to flee in terror.)
--Nue (a bizarre beast in Japanese lore--giant badger's body, tiger's legs, monkey's head, serpent's head for a tail. They lived in stormclouds, and their presence could cause disease)
--Tengu
--Kitsune
--Rakshasi
--Ghuls
--Marids (REALLY powerful jinn, and extremely evil. The efreet have nothing on them)
--Sphinxes
--Shedu (also called lammasu by the Assyrians, these are the winged, human-headed bulls guarding Babylonian temples)
--Sword saints (unless someone can think of a better term. Basically, the idea is a masterful swordsman who uses two swords at once)
--Cockatrices
--Kelpies
--Bone golemim
--Banesidhe (or, as it's often mispelled, banshee)

--Kobolds (not necessarily evil)They ARE evil, and like to cause terror in mines were humans search for gold, or Dwarves for that matter.
--SylphsThis ½ Tornado ½ Wind Witch must replace the Air Elemental!
--SalamandersThis red lizardman on snaketail MUST replace the pokemon/Fire Elemental
--UndinesThis one should replace the Water elemental
--Dullahans (they were very powerful unseelie faeries in Irish lore. The messengers of the death god, they took the appearance of horsemen carrying their heads under their shoulders. The heads of dullahans could see any distance with perfect clarity. They could be repelled by showing gold--even as much as a gold pin caused them to flee in terror.)Don't sound cool to me
--Nue (a bizarre beast in Japanese lore--giant badger's body, tiger's legs, monkey's head, serpent's head for a tail. They lived in stormclouds, and their presence could cause disease)I dislike all Chinese mythology/monsters
--TenguThe evil prinses/witch that kills with her ugly face, she has black crow wings
--Kitsune?????
--Rakshasi this creature is elephant headed right? This one is really much to strong and almost god
--Ghulsyou mean the corpse eating ghoul?
--Marids (REALLY powerful jinn, and extremely evil. The efreet have nothing on them)2 genies are enough for me
--Sphinxesthe Greek version is much cooler then the boring egyptian version! The greek has a lioness body the head of a beautifull woman and the wings of an angel
--Shedu (also called lammasu by the Assyrians, these are the winged, human-headed bulls guarding Babylonian temples)Looks like a split of a minotaur and angel to me.. I prefer Famous monsters sorry....
--Sword saints (unless someone can think of a better term. Basically, the idea is a masterful swordsman who uses two swords at once)I dislike every HUMAN like creature
--CockatricesThe brother of the Basilisk, this half lizard half kock does not stone the opponent but put them into a sea of flames.
--KelpiesThe green evil swamp illusion using horses
--Bone golemimBone golem, the 4 armed scizor handed giant skeleton
--Banesidhe (or, as it's often mispelled, banshee)It's banshee atleast that name is much cooler.. and that name doesn't have a chance to come into the game, NWC makers don't know the banshidhe name so they won't include it, call it banshee
That are my personal opinions on them.

This ones I took from D&D
Quote: Why everybody always use creatures that I don't know about??
Can't anybody just choose one of these fellows?
And make towns out of the more FAMOUS monsters?
NEUTRALL/Weak-Strong
Mycontid/Toadstool People(I saw them in balders gate, and I loved them!)
Sword Spider/Giant Spider(This is just another name because I dislike the name Giant Spider)
Kengu/Avenger,Samurai Bird(I know them as Avenger a birdlike male samurai that uses 2 katanas in Age Of Mythology)
Orog/Razormane(This one is like the Homm4 Orc piglike)
Vulpine/Werefox,Female(I knew them before of some scetches)
Lacedon/Drowned Returned(I know them from diablo2, this are Drowned people that come from their water grave to drown more people, they can controll the water)
Flayer/Mind Eater(Bulders Gate)
Yuan Ti/Snake People(Bulders Gate)
Drider/Half Spider,Half Female Drow(My version is very different then D&D)
Ettin/2 Headed Giant(I saw them there but I liked them in Icewinddale first)
See.... I only saw the D&D site a couple a days ago.. Never really interested in D&D, I know all those creatures from other games or internet general and ofcourse PICTURE books.
