Protests turning into a small scale uprising.

This is Taksim Square, it is like the Times Square of Istanbul, it's about 5-8 minutes to where I live by walking, today protesters who were objecting to the demolition of a park in the square and the latest law passed that restricts selling of alcohol in grocery stores after 22:00 were responded with heavy resistance by the police, they used pressured water and gas on the protesters. One thing led to another and the result is this:

Strange thing is none of the major news channels are broadcasting it, almost everyone I know are communicating through facebook and twitter at the moment, saying the police are blocking ambulances and ambushing people who are trying to run away through the back streets. There are crowds gathering in many cities supporting the protesters and not just cities in Turkey, I saw photos from Netherlands and Germany.

Stay safe and don't do anything dangerous.

What do the protesters want, besides the things you mentioned in your first post?

Well, my comment would be, it's a reaction to the government and Erdogan's condescending attitude towards any kind of political opposition in general. You know how these things go, there's tension and at some point it explodes. I wonder if there's gonna be some real long-term effect though, the media is too quiet in all of this. There's only individuals using the internet as some kind of a private network.

If the news reports are to be trusted, they only wanted to stage a protest and sit there and protest. Shame the police messed up badly.

Every three hours or so, still convoys honking horns pass along, housewives  accompany them drumming pots with forks all over the windows.

LOL. I wasn't one of the marchers, a few friends who got burned by the tear gas spent the night in my place since all roads were blocked and hospitals were full but that's it; I functioned as a tent. Do I feel ashamed, yes, but only a little bit.

Actually memleket doesn't translate exactly as motherland, it means country but in this context, not any country, your country. It would have been weird to translate it as "someone from the country." That means something else in English. And what if I had said motherland, why would that necessarily be nationalism? What a freakishly nitpicking thing to say.

Also the Young Turk movement is specific to early 20th Century. There are no more Young Turk nationalists, just nationalists.

Operation Nemesis and World War I took care of the Young Turks.

Has the rioting waned at all, Artu?  From what I've read, hundreds have been detained but protesting is still strong.

Well, it's been three days, so it's not as raged as it was but in my facebook page there are still dozens of status updates every minute like, "Police attacked the crowd in Kizilay, Ankara", "they blocked etc etc street," "doctors are operating in XXX mall" so yeah.

Let's just keep this about the riots in Turkey, and not what it means to be a nationlist.
