It can be played solo.  You assume the role of one or more investigators.  The game scales depending on the amount of investigators as well.

I've heard quite a bit of buzz about Doomtown: Reloaded but LCG's are not really my thing.  Essentially, anything that has a LOT of expansions is bound to be bad for my wallet.  Hell, I've already purchased two monster & hero packs and three lieutenant packs for Descent and I've only played it once.

After viewing and reading reviews and comments about the boardgames that I think I would like to buy... I am now confused.

Honestly, I like a boardgame in which I can play solo or in group with my friends (I actually have no friends but cousins instead ). Also, in my country, boardgame is not that popular so sometimes its hard to get one.

The store where I'm buying boardgames from only offers these two which I considered buying: Castle Ravenloft and Descent: Journeys of the Dark (2nd Edition). Eldritch Horror is not yet available and I don't know when will it be available. I want a boardgame now (I have no patience, ). So I'm bound to chose between the two.

But with the reviews and comments that I've read and watched, I'm now beginning to get doubtful if I should really buy one.  I'm new to boardgames and I don't know if I would like one or not. But if I bought one, I just hope that its worth it so I'm really having a hard time to decide. Which of the two? That D&D game or Descent?

From what I've read:

Castle Ravenloft:
-No strategy
-Everything is decided by the dice
-Draw tile, fight monster, rinse and repeat.
-Dull theme
-Predictable AI

Descent 2E:
-Unbalanced (one side cannot conceivably stand a chance in some scenarios)
-Obvious tactics (like Heroes: rush the objectives. Overlord: block the heroes' path by putting monsters at the very obvious choke points)
-Predictable
-Some heroes are really strong, some are really weak (that you will obviously not use them again)

So... should I believe these? All I want is just to have fun - a boardgame which I can either solo or play with group. One that's really challenging. And maybe something which I won't be bored playing for a year.

Please help me.

First of all, board games are fun. I only got into them a year ago myself, and I advice not to despair and get one. The ones I bought were a huge success among my friends, even the ones who were skeptical about the concept at first.

Secondly, why limit yourself to your local stores? I don't. My local stores don't have everything I want and the prices are usually at least as high as buying from Ebay. Which is where I'm buying most of my games now.

@Galatea

True, Castle Ravenlofts gameplay mechanic relies heavily on the 20k dice (which I'm not a fan of actually) so it can get quite random, and if you're unlucky you can really get your ass kicked. But nothing beats that sense of impending doom in the game. Every encounter brings you damage, almost every event can f*ck you up nicely, every monster must be dealt with or they will overwhelm you. So the game can be really unforgiving. But the satisfaction when me and my brother beat the boss while our heroes have their last HP is great! And it's a strictly co-op game while Descent for instance needs at least three players for co-op, because one always has to be a dungeon master...

Ah, yes, did I mention there are at least two quests in Ravenloft that you can play single-player? They are quite fun.

And there is actually some strategy in the game like positioning of your heroes or using a (very limited) pool of spells/abilities.

I also really like the fact that the game plays quite fast. We usually finish it in about 1,5-2 hours which is not long for a dungeon crawler I think...

PS: Oh, and the figures are great. I even think they are a little better made then FFG ones...

PS 2: If you don't like CR's horror theme you can check Wrath of Ashaldaron or Legend of Drizzt. They are similar, but supposedly they have some mechanic tweaks and have some different settings (though the games can actually be mixed). I'm thinking about Wrath of Ashaldaron myself. That dragon figure is sweet! Oh, and I've heard some rumors that the fourth game in the series is coming...

My friend has a bad experience from purchasing in Ebay bit he admitted that it was his fault for not reporting right away. But still I'm afraid that the same thing might happen to me. I've never tried buying from Ebay. Maybe I should check it out and see if the shipping cost wont cost that much.

@blob2
Recently what I had in mind was to buy CR. I'm really excited aboout this game. It's d&d and I like d&d from the compiter games. It also has those cool looking figures and I love figures, I just love them! But those reviews gave me doubt... I think you are right. Maybe I should try one and check it out. Those boardgames are pretty expensive(at least for me) so there's this thing on my mind that if I buy one it should be worth it.

Anyway, seema like you guys are having fun so I bet I will too. Thanks for your suggestions!

I think those D&D ones are good for people wanting to try board games. I started my adventure with Talisman, and although the base box is sufficient to play, when you get ensnared (or "enamored" like me ) with the game, you keep wanting to buy more and more expansions, and it has 10+ expansions, each costing a pretty penny. I've already put a lot of money into Talisman, but I've had some to spend, because I've earned a little financial bonus a while ago, and I wanted to have some fun with it . I recommend this game, but like I say, it's an expensive one.

Back to CR. It's main advantage is that it's completely stand-alone. Once you buy it, you absolutely don't need to buy anything else. Also, you can find some additional quests in the net (though the game has around 10 in it's Adventure Book, and they're quite diverse). Other similar games, mostly, have some expansions...

The only thing I'm wondering about is that I've read that if someone wants to buy an D&D game it's better to start with Wrath of Ashaldaron, cus it has some rule tweaks. I've bought CR because of it's horror setting, though WoA also has my attention You should think about it.

And about buying such a game. Are you sure your country doesn't have some hobby online shops? I buy my games mostly through internet (but through my countries shops), and they can give some really nice prices...

It's really hard to say if you will like CR, and every game can become boring after a while, but at least you'll have some really nice figures (you can even paint them). Boss figures are big and impressively detailed (all figures are impressively detailed to be exact), and I'm pretty sure there isn't any similar board game with such nice figures for this price.

You are sooo right! Castle Ravenloft! It was a blast! Its just 4 days since I got the game and I played it for like 20+ times! Most of the time I play solo and it's still very enjoyable. It has really a ton of fun and excitement and thrill! You know, I think I'm like playing draft in Magic Cards but with those cool figures and a story too! I also downloaded user-made adventures. They are very good too!

Still, I have many questions in mind about the ruling.  I'm just wondering if this is the appropriate thread to bring those up, or maybe I could just hcm you if you won't bother

All in all thank you for your suggestions and comments.  I'm thinking of buying Wrath of Asharladon next, but! I want to paint my figures first!

I haven't posted here in a while even though we've had some developments over here. I didn't get anymore games yet, but more and more of my friends are getting into board gaming so I got to play some interesting stuff lately.

The most interesting one is Betrayal at the House on a Hill.
Each player controls one character and the group starts their journey in the entrance of an abandoned house. The map of the house is made up of tiles that you have to draw from the tile pile every time you walk into a new room. Depending on what tile you got certain things happen to you, both good and bad. Some tiles make you roll a "haunt roll", the success of which gets harder with every roll. When someone finally fails a haunt roll, the haunt begins. One of the players is revealed to be a traitor who lured the rest in for his own insane purposes and is now trying to kill them. There are different haunt scenarios each one with its own rules and victory conditions.

What makes this game so much fun is its replay value and the unknown factor. The replay factor is incredibly high because each time you play the game, the house looks totally different. This is true especially because there are three levels to the house - ground level, second floor and the basement, and many tiles can be put on any floor. There are also 50 different haunt scenarios that depend on which room were you in when the haunt began and what card triggered it. So at least at the first several games you are almost guaranteed to play completely different haunt rules and objectives.
The unknown factor comes in the form of the betrayer. None of the players has any clue which one of them will be the evil betrayer until the haunt is revealed. So while the game is mostly cooperative, you're never sure if you want to give your friends useful items in case they turn out to be on the other side of the fence and shoot you in the head with your own gun.

The game is up to 6 players, takes 2-3 hours to play and is a LOT of fun. Strongly recommended to all.

I NEVER get to be the traitor.  Even when I trigger a haunt I am stuck being a victim.

That said, of the times I've played, I've only been killed by the traitor (some sort of Jason Voheers type).  The other times we successfully stopped the blob monster, alien, and invisible man.

Diamonds
Players: 2-6
Play Time: 30 minutes
Price:  Currently $32.93 on Amazon.com, $17.48 Coolstuffinc.com

In short

A fantastic trick-taking game where you are not screwed when you cannot follow suit.

In long

Diamonds is a trick-taking game where the goal is to acquire the most victory points.  At the start of the game, everyone takes a vault shield, player aid and places three diamonds in front of the vault.  At the end of the game, any diamonds you have in front of your vault (called the "showcase")count as 1 point each and any that you have in your vault count as 2 points each.  Depending on the number of players, X amount of rounds are played.  The following image is what the game looks like being played (sans the box being left in the play area. )

The white diamonds are worth 1 point and the red diamonds 5 points.  Image provided by Mouseketeer.

Depending on the number of players and what variant you play up to 15 cards are dealt to each player The cards come in standard suits and are numbered 1 through 15.  Upon receiving your cards, the dealer will state a number 1 to 3 and that many cards are passed to the left.

Exciting action shot of cards provided by evilone.

Once the cards are delt and passed, the dealer will then put down a card.  For example, the dealer leads off with the 13 of diamonds.  If the next player has a diamond, they MUST play it.  If they do not have a diamond, they can play a card of any suit and activate its special action but cannot win the trick.  The highest card played of the led suit wins the trick and the owner of the card gets to activate that suits special action.  The special actions are what makes Diamonds stand out from the rest of the trick-taking games.

I mentioned player aids earlier and each aid describes the special actions of each suit.

Imaged provided by evilone.

The special actions are:

Diamonds - Take a diamond and place it in your vault.
Hearts - Take a diamond from the pile and place it in your showcase.
Spades - Take a diamond in your showcase and place it in your vault.
Clubs - Take a diamond from any other player's showcase and place it in your showcase.

An example of play:  Nicholas leads off with a 12 of diamonds, Laura has no diamonds and plays a 1 of hearts, Nicole plays a 15 of diamonds, Dana plays a 4 of spades, and Suzy plays a 3 of diamonds.  Nicole wins the trick and puts a diamond in her vault, Laura takes a diamond from the pool and places it in her showcase, Dana takes a diamond from his showcase and places it in his vault.

Whoever won the trick, then leads off the next hand.  After all cards have been played, the round is over.  Whoever has the most cards of a particular suit (by winning tricks) gets to take the special action of the suits he or she won.  In the event a player does not get any tricks, he or she gets to take 2 diamond special actions.

The game is played to a set number of rounds with a new player becoming dealer every round.  Once the rounds are over, players count up the number of diamonds in their vault and showcase and whoever has the most points, wins.

So what do I think about it?

What initially drew me to Diamonds was wanting to play a more traditional style of card game.  In my neck of the world, the card game Euchre is incredibly common and played quite a bit, but I have never been overly found of it.  I really enjoy Gin Rummy but seldom have the opportunity to play it.  After watching reviews, Diamonds seemed like it fit what I was looking for.

After having played Diamonds twice, I was right.  Diamonds fit perfectly.  I enjoy it so much I rated it a 10 on Boardgamegeek.com.  The game has a great price point and good components.  The game is very easy to teach and I think appeals to a wide-variety of people.  Like trick-taking games?  Like card games?  Like filler games?  Like simple to play games?  I'm fairly certain I could teach it to my parents (Trying to teach them Bohnanza was awful. "You sell beans for coins." "Why?" "Because you are a bean farmer." "Why?" "Because you made a series of choices in life that ultimately set you on the path to becoming a bean farmer!"  Sigh.) and they would enjoy it.

In most trick-taking games, when you cannot play suit, you feel doomed.  In Diamonds, even if you cannot win a trick, you can still do something useful.  With clever planning, you do not even need to win tricks to win the game (I still recommend playing to win when you can though).  It never feels like there is a bad move although sometimes, activating a spade special action without any diamonds in your showcase is a drag.

There really isn't much more I can say about the game. For what it sets out to do, it does it perfectly.  As many other reviewers have pointed out, Diamonds has great potential to be around for a long time and feels almost classic.

In conclusion

If you like trick-taking games, Diamonds is a no-brainer.  If you are looking for a great filler game, something easy to teach & player, or something that appeals to a wide group of people, I would strongly consider Diamonds.

Wrong on both counts. Splendor was nominated, but didn't win, and it's not a game for kids, because it's a zero-communication optimization game. It's not a card game as in trick taking either, but a collect-and-exchange game: Think HoMM: you collect 5 different resources (when it's your turn you can take either 1 res of 3 different kinds or 2 of the same kind) that are needed to buy cards which in turn have a reduction value for follow-up cards, and eventually you can afford to buy cards with victory points that will eventually lead to victory.
Very dry.
