After the game I was told by a player that the game was unbalanced, and I was super confused. The only reason the final scoring had such a wide gap was that one player refused to buy any cards for the entire second half of the game (in which the entire gameplay loop consists of buying cards), endlessly amassing resources and completely starving out the next player. Of course the player who caused this is the one who complained about the lack of balance.

This raises the question - if a game heavily relies on active participation of all players to remain balanced, is it a flaw of the game?

Fury of Dracula and Descent 2nd edition.  I was the Dracula in Fury and the Overlord in Descent.

We have only played Fury once and while I won, it was not a crushing victory by any means.  One of the hunters forgot to ever use their power, which made the game easier for me.  It soured the others which bothers me.  I like the game and want to play it more, but it's a hard sell.

Descent is different.  I didn't play to ensure everyone had fun; I played to win.  I *CRUSHED* the heroes in two different scenarios, the most notable being the Masquerade Ball.  The heroes moaned when I put two iron golems in the entryway to slow them down.  I chuckled when they failed to rescue a single attendee.  They didn't stand a chance in the second part of the mission.  By that point, the heroes were so demoralized they quit.  Even though I technically won due to default, I still lost because nobody wants to play anymore.

I'm not normally into the big, long board games. If it's two hours or more, odds are I won't play it again. Also my dislike for worker placement games has become something of a meme in my local gaming group.

Well, today I played Empires: Age of Discovery. It's a really big game with a huge pile of very similar miniatures that took us over three hours to get through. It's a combination of worker placement and area control according to most sources, but the area control part didn't quite feel like a big part of it.

A couple times other people swore when the spot they were looking at got taken by someone else time and time again - well, what can I say? Welcome to worker placement. That's kinda the whole thing. Learn to prioritize really well or go for an open-ended strategy, or just get burned.

I ended up grabbing two highly synergistic endgame buildings on the two final turns and landed a victory with a sizable lead in a game I was expecting to be terrible at, hoping to possibly maybe not be last out of five players.

I can certainly see why it's regarded as a great game, and I might even be persuaded to play it again... in a few months

Finally got my hands on Lords of Hellas (1st wave, so it's core game without expansions for now). In short, this is an area control game with battles and an addition of rpg elements: hero quests and monster hunts. These elements are basic, but enjoyable. The game scales nicely with the number of players and it even has a solo mode.

I enjoy it. It feels like a really balanced game. For a dudes-on-the-map game, it tries to bring resource managment to minimum. Actually your only resources are your soldiers (for battle and area control) and priests (for bonuses). Plus ocassional bonuses like re-usable artifacts and passive blessings.

The game feels like every move counts. I think its easy to pick up, hard to master. My initial impression is that you need to focus on one strategy (3 possible win conditions for two players with an additional one in 3+ player games). Ofc you're opponents won't stay idle and that makes things interesting.

We only scratched the surface with my brother, but we can already see that this game went through a lot of playtests. You might think like there will be a lot of turtling in a two-player game, but we're onto our throats as far as turn two (each turn consists of a set of repeated actions + one special action, to a maximum of 5, until your only option is a "reset" of sorts, which you can do earlier actually).

At this point I will need to play it a few times more to give my final verdict, but it seems they delivered on their promises for something fresh and exciting. Judging by the reviews the game was well recived by the board gaming community.

PS: The game has gorgeous art, and their original "sundrop" pre-paint technique adds an interesting visual aspect to the figurines.

PS 2: You might want to try it Lord_Woock. A single game lasts between 1-2 hours. Not a bad result for an area control game

I still need to get Lords of Hellas played.  I haven't been able to game nearly as much as I have in past years and it's often easier to pull out old games instead of teaching new ones.

I'm still waiting for expansions to put the final verdict, AR are taking their sweet time with releasing them. Although our collection isn't that great, me and my brother still think it's the best board game we have played...

Terraforming Mars is coming to PC soon and to tablets somewhat less soon. It's a bit more than the base game atm, with optional 'corporate era' rules and cards, rest of the game will be added in time if sales are good.

For now, my impressions of the beta are:

Interface takes some getting used to, font is smaller than ideal, but it works

Visuals are hit-and-miss, cards themselves are ugly, but Mars is gorgeous and you occasionally have significant visual effects tied to specific cards.

Even in its beta state, I encountered almost no bugs

I played vs AI and the solo challenge mostly. AI has 3 levels, easy is a pushover even for a novice like me, but even medium gave a good challenge, so I didn't try out hard quite yet. Hotseat is super clunky, but vs AI and in solo it's actually smooth

For now I'd recommend getting the board game, but it may evolve yet over time.

I went to this printing place to finally print the new board for playtesting my game, which I've been sitting on for way too long. Super excited to bring it home and eventually take it to game night, but when I arrive at my place I see that the snowing thing is upscaled by two millimeters per square.

Super angry. I want to finally play my gosh darned game, but I can't

EDIT: Follow up, the playtest happened! Game still needs work, but outlook is pretty good!

My first real boardgame! D&D: Castle Ravenloft

Im so happy to have bought it. I'm really enjoying the game. Alone! ('coz nobody wants to play with me , but still it's very enjoyable!)

I'm currently at Adventure 5. Trying it out with different character and power combinations. I've also downloaded some custom scenarios. Super excited to try them out!

*Thanks Binabik for the help!

You kinda forgot to tell the name of it. But I know cus I own it: D&D's Return to Castle Ravenloft.

This one is really cutthroat-ish. We completed a few adventures with my brother, and while it's fun, your either loose or win by a horse nails length. It's one of those games that want to kill you on every corner while you always lack resources. Fun times, but the rules are a bit unwieldy (it's hard to go back to this game after a while), so we eventually picked other board games over it.

Question: if you wanted dungeon crawlers, why didn't you pick up the "oh-so-popular" Gloomheaven? From what I know it has a strong single-player variant...

Well I thought Castle Ravenloft is a popular game and most of you would be able to guess it. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm going to edit my post.

I also had several other boardgames at home. I should probably take them out of the closet and take pictures of them. Maybe when I'm not busy anymore.

I just checked Gloomhaven. It has a very high rating in Boardgamesgeek.  Checked its price and whoa! So expensive!  I'll try to read more about the game and if I'll like it, I'll put it on my to-buy list.

Well, some people state that Gloomheaven is one of the best if not the best board game ever. I'm not into dungeon crawlers currently so I'm not interested...

I don't know if Ravenloft is popular, but at least some people heard about it. Guess it's a Wizard of the Coast game with cool figures so it's ought to be popular, but there are other 'sets' in the series: for instance with the ever-so-popular Drizzt Do'Urden or Temple of Elemental Evil (you can even mix and match these games) which are probably more popular...

Actually overcomplication was something that kept me from buying more games in this series.

Since you said that about Gloomheaven, I'm very interested now. It's just too expensive. I think I can't afford to buy a boardgame that costs 140$. I think need to save money in one year.

As for thr D&D games, I'm actually eyeing for Legend of Drizzt. It's next in my list. And what do you mean by overcomplication? I think those 3 D&D series have the same gameplay unless you are talking about the Temple of Elemental Evil. If I'm not mistaken, Temple is not included in thr series. I'd always thought they were:

Castle Ravenloft
Wrath of Ashardalon
Legend of Drizzt

Long setup (too much stuff, zounds of tokens), need to check rules (and scenarios) again and again, roll calculations etc. Well it's not a complicated game to play rule-wise, but there's too much stuff to think about when playing. It might not be apparent at first, but playing more games showed me that the pacing/flow of the game is lacking and there are board games I simply enjoy more. So it might be a matter of preferences, this actually came to me after I played more board games (the fact was I really enjoyed Ravenloft at first). I also dislike the fact that the game artificially raises the difficulty level with cheap monster effects or events which mostly have negative outcomes... well you could say that is the characteristic of the game, but it feels really disappointing at times. But I do enjoy the co-op aspect. It's one of the best co-op games I have ever played, you really have a feeling of accomplishment when you finish a scenario together.

Keep in mind I have a specific view on board games, it's a love/hate relationship. At one times I really want to play them, other times I'm discouraged by how long it takes to organize/finish a session etc

Temple of Elemental Evil has the same mechanics. In October they will release Tomb of Annihilation, which also shares mechanics with those games.

Gloomhaven is fantastic but a royal pain to set up.  And if you cannot play it regularly, it becomes even harder to come back to.  It's been months since I last touched it and I have no clue where I even am in the game.

On a different note, I recently acquired Arkham Horror 3rd edition and am excited to get it to the table tomorrow.

Also, for anybody who enjoys Euro-style games and co-ops, I recommend my favorite game, Spirit Island.  You play as an awakening island spirit charged with driving invaders from your lands.  It's excellent.  There is currently a new Kickstarter project up for its latest expansion and you can snag a base copy of the game with it.  Check out the link.

A friend of mine has like 4000 board games and every time I go to his house I get jealous that I don't play board games any more. Just don't have the lifestyle for it sadly. But someone mentioned to me that there is a new movement of board games that can be played solo. What a concept.

Anyway, I made a list of solo wants about 20 games long and started with Gloomhaven and Mage Knight. I've only played Gloomhaven so far but found it very enjoyable. I leave the game set up, though.

I recently heard Multiplayer games are loosing its social aspects. While a few years later chats and actually communicating were elements of playing an MMORPG for instance, now games suffer from almost non existant social interactions. But I don't play any at all so I don't know, just thinking maybe the same is happening to board games? I mean the popularity of solo games? Although I think it's more about time constraints, I know they take a hell lot of time.

I also don't play them much, had a friendly meeting few months ago where we played Lords of Hellas. Speaking of which still waiting for all the 2nd wave content, quite big delays happened (it's like a year long delay )...

So myself and 3 others are looking for a kind of GM-less tabletop RPG. I found a few 'legacy'games which are mostly what we want, but the one we're most eager to try out (VtM:Legacy) isn't even out yet. Are there any alternatives?

Adventures in Austerion (AiA) is a RPG using some boardgame mechanisms (cards, events, tiles, etc.). Dungeoncrawling represents an important part of the game. It can be played in a classical RPG mode, in solo mode or in GMless mode. AiA gameplay uses several interesting ideas and its illustrations are awesome. It's a french production and all rules and contents are in both languages, french and english.

The main authors are Guillaume Tavernier (illustrator, well known for its famous illustrations for RPG - maps and landscapes) and Géraud G. (game designer in RPG).

AiA is in ongoing crowdfunding on Kickstarter : it's already funded, but several stretch goals are still to achieve.
More can be read on the Kickstarter page or seen in the teaser.
