Speaking of games with cool art, here's another cool looking game from Awaken Realms, the Lords of Hellas creators:

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

The game looks like a pain to play , but a digital version was also announced, so I'll probably pick that one up.

I have been pulled from my shameless lurking to seek aid from some of you fine people. I am going to be visiting a friend of mine sometime in the nearish future and wanted to see if any of you might be able to help with a boardgame recommendation.

I am looking for a game or games that (loosely):
Preferably have a dark/gloomy atmosphere.
Are not too complicated (some complication is fine and if it is complicated for one person and easier on the others that is also perfectly acceptable).
And are somewhat story based.

Maturity is fine if it is for 2, any more players and preferably it would be a bit more family friendly. My budget would be completely based on how good the game is, I don't mind spending extra for quality. Their favorite game is apparently House on the Hill.

Considering getting them Gloom, can be a bit hit or miss but I think it fits them quite well. Also thinking about either Pandemic or Pandemic legacy and would love to hear which of those you would recommend. Any other recommendations would also be welcome as I don't know about that many games overall.

Sorry for the wall of text, any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's not a wall of text, that's barely a fence.

Gloom is quite fun in my experience.
If you want something more serious, consider Dead of Winter. It is gloomy, hard and has a betrayer mechanic, so if they like Betrayal at the House on the Hill, they might like this as well. But just like Betrayal, it doesn't work for 2 players, so keep that in mind.

Hmm, its hard for a game to be gloomy/mature and family friendly at the same time unless we are talking about a dark comedy type of game.

I can recommend Lords of Hellas: it's gloomy, scales incredibly well with the number of players, and the rules are easy to grasp once you play at least two games. It doesn't have much of a plot though, it's rather about the setting (although it has a sort of one player campaign with a narrative).

Family friendly to a degree, I think the youngest member would still be well into their teens. Mainly playing with my friends parents.

I just looked into both of those games, they both look great for different reasons. Dead of Winter looks just about perfect for her, heavily considering it. Lords of Hellas is a game that I was considering for myself anyway. I saw your hype about Hellas when it was just coming out Blob, glad to see it didn't disappoint.

Always loved board games and now that I have a bit more expendable money I am looking to beef up my collection.

Thank you both, great suggestions

Damn it all.

I was supposed to be done with buying board games. But here I am, backing a Kickstarter campaign for Etherfields. The concept and art intrigued me and Lords of Hellas from AR is a very good game so it's a solid recomedation. AR has it's downsides like huge delays, and QA issues (bad prints etc), but at least the games they make are good.

I know I will probably regret it, but yolo

Same.  I backed Lords of Hellas and liked the final product.  I really adore the minis of Etherfields and have gone all-in.

I also just found out Yedo is going to get a master set offered via Kickstarter and while I love the original, I am definitely interesting in checking it out.

So far I only got Etherfields Core pledge. I'm considering the Sphinx add-on, maybe the artbook and minifigure set. 20 Minifigures set looks great, but it isn't cheap, plus the figures themselves are mostly a decorative addition. A bit of a shame you can't buy them seperately, but only as a full set.

The problem with this kind of games is that it's hard to get this stuff outside the Kickstarter campaign. Some people might sell those eventually, but usually they buy it for keeps.

I wanted all the game content and I will probably throw in more for the art book (I went all-in gameplay but not extras).

It's not a wise move on my part because I have many, many games sitting on my shelves that I barely get played these days due to the kiddo, wife's schedule, and summer just being a generally awful time to schedule anything.

I know where you're coming from. It's hard to resist such fine products when you see them, even when you know the games might be doomed for shelf-life.

Though it's a bit superficial thinking, you can always assume this is an investment, and sell the games with a profit later on as the stretch goodies alone are 100% more value over retail.

Btw, with this campaign finished AR now has 3 board games in top 10 Kickstarter most funded tabletop projects.

Sooo, did anyone play Kemet?

I've been eying this game for some time and seems now is a good occasion to invest in it as they are releasing an updated 2.0 version via Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/matagot/kemet-blood-and-sand

Thoughts?

I haven't but have heard. Lot of good things about the first edition.  I would have backed it but I went in on Frosthaven and Sea of Legends instead.  I had backed Hel: The Last Saga but canceled.

Currently enjoying Gloomhaven and Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, which is a fantastic introduction to the system.  I highly recommend it.

There's also a kind of a "rival" to Kemeth from CMON: Ankh: Gods of Egypt. It looks cool, but like with every game from CMON there's a ridiciolous amount of plastic. I once made a mistake of buying Massive Darkness all-in from them and the boxes take almost an entire shelf in my cupboard while the game is cumbersome to set up and play

Try owning Massive Darkness, Black Plague, AND Green Horde.

So much plastic.  Good painting practice though.

Well, I did consider Green Horde back when it was on KS, but bailed out on it.

I had a problem with board games that I usually picked substance over style, but I learned that the less set-up I need the more I enjoy a game so I pick games based on this now. That said I will still pick minature bg over euro style games. It's simply what I like in tabletop gaming. Kemet seems like a game that strikes a good balance: it looks nice but it's streamlined and the setup is minimal. I will consider it, late pledge is open atm.

I don't paint, it's another expensive and tedious hobby that I'd rather steer clear from

So I backed Kemet and... now I'm sitting here thinking if I should invest in Ankh: Gods of Egypt.

I've been looking extensivly into the game in past few days and I like what I'm seeing. The game is not exactly area control as it's more about "point gathering" rather then full on battles. I'm not sure if I'll like it as Lords of Hellas for instance, but I figure games like this are my favourite style of board games. It's really expensive especially with the current exchange rate of US dollar but if past two games of the trilogy can be taken as reference, as they are really popular and hard to get, then... the Kickstarter version of the game will be worth double or even triple the value post release.

If Ankh is successful, they will run a 2nd campaign and it will probably hit retail.

As to Kemet, if you are already having regrets, maybe you should back out of it while you can?

What do you mean "second campaign". How does it work?

OmegaDestroyer said:

I don't have regrets actually. I've been eying Kemet since first edition was released and I figured the "overhaul" is a good occasion to nab it as I like the new look more.

At this point my "regrets" are about buying another Ancient Egypt themed area control game And one that is very pricey.

EDIT: So I've done some research and seems buying the game will be a good idea (yeah I know, like every board game freak I try to find ways to justify spending money on this stuff)
- A lot of exclusive stuff otherwise hard to get outside KS
- CMON games are very popular especially the exclusive content, there is a high chance that you will profit in case you decide to sell it
- Full refund policy until shipment (there's only the 3-5% KS fee)
- The Legendary Trilogy is the favourite child of Lang so there's a high chance the game will be as polished and as great as BR or RS

Ofc there are also arguments against like delays, gossip of CMON uncertain financial state or shipping cost but it's a risk you need to take.

At the end of the days those figures will look great on the shelf of my new apartament Maybe I'll even paint them
