Anatolios didn't get anything from his search, except for the low growl he got from Constable Angua when he tried to grab her foot.

"By all means, we would all like to hear your idea, good volunteer.” Carrot looked hopefully at Brian.

"One of the ways an ordinary book is used,is to make a copy from it.
And one of the rumors for the Library is,that no magical book can be copied,even from the most skillful among the people,who make book copies.Many,who have tried this,have dissapeared forever.

My idea is this-what if someone want this book in order to make a copy from it and have found the ways and means to do so?

Since we are at the rumors-there is this one-although many copy masters have failed to do so,there is but one,who can make a copy from a magical book-the Librarian."

"Ook?” The Librarian raised his eyebrows and pointed at himself.

"An interesting idea,” commented Captain Carrot, “but I find it hard to believe the Librarian would report to us about a book he stole himself. He would be much more likely to just put it back.”

"An interesting idea, but I find it hard to believe the Librarian would report to us about a book he stole himself. He would be much more likely to just put it back.”

"And the footprints are inconsistent with the Librarian's," Anatolios agreed absently while he scribbled some notes on the average shoe size and style of those present, comparing them to the footprints around the pedestal. "They appear to be human feet, of about average size and shape, with no distinguishing style to the shoe. The Librarian would have had to go through an intermediary to abscond with the book—a shocking waste of effort," said the man who was planning to purify the entire river Ankh for a water sample. "Fortunately we have more substantial manifestations to base a theory of suspect on than mere rumor:

First, we have the evidence of the physical prints themselves. Their existence suggests a physical thief, as opposed to an individual who is incorporeal or capable of some form of levitation, who would not have left prints in the first place.

As they appear to be human feet, it is therefore most likely that the primary culprit was not an orangutan, troll, or any other species with an unusual podiatric conformation; it was, if not a human, certainly someone capable of utilizing human footwear. We can also rule out individuals with a foot size larger than those of the prints, and possibly smaller, though we must not neglect to consider the possible application of numerous pairs of socks.

We can also rule out individuals missing one or both feet, or with a body style preventing them from entering through the door, since that appears to be the point of entry.

It was also, as our friend whatever-your-name-is suggested," Ana waved vaguely in Wolfram's direction, "someone who went to the trouble to unlock the lock, rather than smash it with physical force, suggesting someone with either skill in opening such devices, or access to the key.

Therefore the next step is to determine if the locks were picked. If so, we can safely assume the thief either had some level of skill with such activities, or had sufficient time to learn while the theft was in progress. Otherwise it would be someone who had access to the key, if only for long enough to steal that too," he added cheerfully. "Have any of them gone missing?" This last was directed at the Librarian. "It may also be useful to determine the amount of time the thief had in which to act; I assume this area is regularly monitored?"

The Librarian held up the key chain he brought with him and rattled with it a bit as if to indicate that all the keys are still there and as far as he's aware were there forever (or at least since he became a librarian which is close enough in his book).

"Oook ook oook.”

"He says he patrols the Library for lost students from time to time, but he only goes down here once a day to check on things.” Captain Carrot translated dutifully.

"Oook eeek.”

Only there are to many place for me and Angua to cover.” He looked at each one of the adventurers, he then produced a handful of badges from his armor and gave one to each. “Since you have all volunteered, and because I have come to trust you (Angua snorted, knowing that Carrot trusted everyone), I'm now making you temporary Watchmen. Split up and Make Inquiries. You can check on any of the suspects we mentioned or try to pick up the thief's trace on the streets. Of course, you can follow other Lines of Inquiries if you have any. You will report anything you find to me. So, where does everyone wants to go?”

Bilious took his badge, and proceeded to head towards the University. Since he personally had no idea where the thief might have gone, but didn't want to bail on his new gig so soon, before said gig could even entertain the thought of it having been taken up by him, he decided he'd need home-ground advantage, if only to steady his nerves. So it was that sometime later, he arrived at the kitchens.

Anatolios retained enough clarity of thought to take the badge and clip it to his headgear before wandering out to the streets. He studied his notes as he went, sometimes scratching behind his ear with his writing utensil and leaving an inky mark. Really, it was terribly inefficient for there to be so much variation between foot sizes; how were people to find shoes? For his next project, he really must look into a self-sizing shoe, or perhaps some way to make everyone's foot the same size. That would solve things nicely, even if such a solution would hamper his progress on his current puzzle...

...and it was an interesting puzzle, even if the part of his soul that lived to tinker with things was currently going unfulfilled. And such interesting phenomenon he'd been able to observe, even if it wasn't immediately relevant to anything...why, even now, he noted that his brief exposure to so much magical energy appeared to have distorted his vision: the skin of passerby had become stretched and cratered, to the point that he could make out individual blackheads, and walls seem to rear up suddenly so he occasionally felt obligated to back away—only to realize the obstruction was no where near him. Fascinating!

But the distortion of one unfortunately-proportioned woman's clothing (or maybe it was lack of clothing; her skin was nearly the same texture as the one-eighth of an outfit she wore) brought him back to himself, slightly. Of course, of course, how dare he forget, he couldn't only focus on the footwear, there had been that scrap of leather to consider as well. And no proper philosopher, inventor, scientist or other learned individual, mad or otherwise, came to a factual conclusion by omitting observed phenomenon from their theories. Unfortunately his working knowledge of leather working was unworkable for this task, but it occurred to him he was in a city, and it was plausible that someone in the city was a tanner...

If nothing else he might be able to find his goat head.

((Ana forgot to turn the magnification off on his headgear. ))

Captain Carrot watched everyone leave. He was astonished when Ethan simply abandoned the investigation and went to the tavern.

"How can someone just turn his back on another man's suffering? Oh well, at least the rest of us are willing to pitch in and do our part. Where do the rest of you want to go?”

"I'll go with this man to the Thieves' Guild.” Angua looked at Brian who was just about to leave, “I don't think you should go there alone. And besides, the thieves tend to get more... talkative with me around.”

"I-I-I think I'll catch with the Ephebean on the streets. I could use some fresh air.” Trutha mumbled almost to himself.

"Oook.”

"Oh, so checking the kitchens is a good idea now? You just ran out of bananas, didn't you?”

Angua smirked as she remarked on the Librarian's choice. The Librarian exposed his yellow fangs. Angua seemed to growl. Carrot stepped in between them.

"Now, now, no need to get riled up. We'll all split into pairs. I'll go catch up to Temporary Lance Constable Wolfram at the Archchancellor's office. Spread out and let's do some good!”

@Bilious
To the untrained eye it looked like the kitchens were in chaos. The staff was required to cook for a whole building of wizards whose idea of sport was competitive eating and whose favorite past time was snacking. Cooks were working feverishly at the tables and stoves, maids ran in and out with food ingredients, dirty dishes and already prepared cuisine. However, despite the seeming chaos, it all functioned. Everyone knew what they were supposed to be doing and where. The bees could probably take a few notes on organized work in tight places if they ever visited the University kitchens. And walking amidst all this was the Queen Bee – Mrs. Whitlow, the Unseen University's Head of Housekeeping. She immediately noticed a foreign object in her domain and approached it with the determination and the momentum of a freight train.

"Yes, I ham Mrs. Whitlow. Who are you hwhat do you want?”

@Anatolios
Anatolios wandered the streets looking for something useful and/or interesting, although with his new way of seeing things everything seemed new an interesting. However, it was only after he turned another corner that he saw something that really caught his eye. Or rather someone. That someone was right in front of him by the looks of it and was walking away from the inventor. What was so interesting about him was his skin. He was mostly clothed, but his neck was exposed and Anatolios with his new-found eye-sight noticed that it was different from all necks he's seen so far. This one was somewhat paler and drier than most, the little craters on the skin being deeper than those he seen before. What was really fascinating, however, was the multitude of little worm-like creatures that inhabited his neck. As Anatolios examined this phenomenon he saw one of the man's fingers fall off. There were no screams of pain or surprise from the man, in fact, he just kept on going like nothing happened. The finger was right in front of the Ephebean inventor and so he reached out to it (whether to give it back or to examine it), but although it was so close he could get it, he leaned over some more, but still couldn't grab the illusive finger. So Anatolios leaned some more, lost his balance and fell on the ground.

This would be a good time to explain something that Commander Vimes figured out a long time ago. Investigations are not propelled forward by careful detectoring or dazzling intellect. They are being moved along by luck. For example, some bystander might casually remark that he hopes it wouldn't rain tonight, and the detective who stood close enough to hear it suddenly has an epiphany that it rained on the morning after the murder, which is why the tracks were washed away, which is why the theory of a murdering flying wizards is not necessarily correct, which means that it was probably some mugger with a big club that done it.

So it was in consistency with this universal truth that as Anatolios lay on the cobbles he saw a big piece of dried up leather right in front of him. It was at this point that Trutha finally caught up with the inventor and gasped.

"Great and Powerful Om, is that a zombie?”

@Brian
Brian and Constable Angua got to the Thieves' Guild without trouble. Trouble tended to steer clear of Angua. Before knocking on the heavy door of the Guild, Angua turned to Brian.

"Out of curiosity, how exactly did you plan to proceed from here?”

@Wolfram
Captain Carrot caught up with Wolfram before he had time to find the Archchancellor's office on his own. Once together, Carrot showed his amazing knowledge of everything and everyone in the city by bringing the pair straight to their destination.

The office was not what one would expect out of the head wizard. They were very little occult figurines and menacing drawings and candles and other accessories wizards are so fond of, despite their total lack of practical applications. What the room did have in surplus was animal heads mounted on the walls. There were also a number of crossbows. One of them was currently in the hands of Mustrum Ridcully – the Archchancellor of the Unseen University. He was standing near the window, dressed in his wizard's robe and wearing his pointy hat and was currently trying to hit pigeons. As it was still morning, this could very well be his idea of early morning exercise. He turned around when he heard the footsteps behind him.

"Ah yes, Captain Carrot, right? What can I do for you, chaps?”

"We're here about the stolen book.”

"Yes, yes, the Librarian mentioned something like that. Dreadful business that. How is that going along then?”

"Actually, we hoped that you could answer some questions my colleague here has for you.”

"Why not? Better than answering the questions of our students.” Ridcully shivered, “don't know why we keep that troublesome lot around really. So, questions, right, ask away! And would you like something to drink with that?”

Even at brief examination it was clear that the piece of leather in his hands was very similar to the one he found in the Library. It too was all dried up and cracks riddled its surface.

"Of course not, it is the skin sample of a creature preserved through means natural or artificial."

"Well, yes, I suppose his skin does look somewhat preserved, but I meant the rest of him as well." said Trutha while pointing a shaking finger at the man Anatolios observed earlier.
