Ok, thanks for the ideas. I'll give this some thought and see what I can come up with.

Discussion will Close: Sunday December 14, 2020

Current Topics of Discussion:

The New Policy on US 2020 Election discussion

A few notes:

Due to the difficulty of policing the large number of US 2020 Presidential election threads and the number of threads being opening on the topic, I have limited discussion on this topic to a single thread and established a number of ground rules that people wishing to discuss this topic must abide by. You may discuss this policy and the ground rules here as well as offer alternatives. Discussion in this thread must stay on topic and must be civil. I will delete any posts that do not follow the rules set forth in the first page of this thread, which includes post limitations. Remember, this is a chance to provide your feedback to me, not to argue amongst each other.

Once the discussion period is over, I will discuss the feedback with other moderators and modify the rules in the election thread if we determine modifications are necessary. Please note that until any changes are made, the ground rules in the 2020 Election thread will be enforced as they now appear.

If you wish to provide comments on this topic to me in private, you may HCM me.

i knew you were going to delete my response there. so here it is again, in the "correct" thread:

Quote:
(6) I reserve the right to delete links to external websites that I believe are egregious purveyors of false or misleading information about the 2020 US Election. I also reserve the right to delete posts in this thread without warning that I feel are against the HC rules, off topic, or spam.

so, you're referring to the two links that i and others posted pointing out the clear election fraud? really?

you think this is a good, unbiased move, as a moderator?

you won't see me making further posts in that thread. you want to make up your own rules for people posting on a topic like a dictator, i won't be a part of it.

---and your response(which you have now deleted) to that, was:

Corribus said:
There are plenty of other places you can go to if you don't like these rules.

you are enforcing your own rules and beliefs on a topic and silencing legit opposition to it. then you attempt to change history by deleting my post and yours, where you so blatantly spelled out that i could find someplace else to go if i didn't like your rules.

now let's watch as you delete, alter, or penalyze this response. i've already saved this one, too.

Merging related threads is something I always suggested and supported. Other than that, we already have the CoC, applying extra rules to a specific topic feels strange to me. As much as I’m pretty sure, if Corribus takes out a link, it will be a truly bs one, that’s really not the point, is it? We have our own judgement to call bs links for what they really are and anybody with a sound judgement mostly ignores them anyway. Banning them will only result in people with conspirical tendencies to act even more erratic, “they are silencing us to cover up the truth” etc.

Although it might feel like an eternity or two the thread might as well stick around at the very least until the next guy is inaugurated. I am sure everybody will behave like gentlemen and have a stellar attitude so there is definitely nothing to worry about. Just take a vacay or something.

I personally feel Corribus is losing his mind because of you guys and your arguments. Though that doesn't excuse this:

No matter your intentions, you cannot justifiably enforce this rule under the CoC. You might want to check again if you're overstepping your bounds or not, because you're about to moderate a thread by your own made up rules.

A reminder: one post per day in this thread. I will delete every post past the first one that you make in a day, as well as any edits that you add to your first post. So make your daily post count. If you can't follow this rule, I will take action. I will try to address all the daily comments at the end of the day.

One clarification right now:
Quote:

Now. I have a question.
Why is the thread open only for one week? The game isn't over before it's over, and inauguration is on the 20th of January. Wouldn't THAT be the date to close it?

The one week period refers to this feedback thread only. The election thread can stay open as long as the discussion doesn’t habitually break the rules.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts so far (both those made privately and publicly). I have already thought a lot about them.

So, here is some of my thinking on these topics:

First, I want to say that moderating a real world forum that spans incendiary topics like politics and religion requires that I balance the need to maintain order and decorum with my wish to allow for open discussion and the free flow of ideas. I try my best to strike that balance, but it’s not always easy. The good thing is that I am a reasonable person who is receptive to feedback on decisions and policies, provided it is offered in a respectful way. If you have an idea for how discussion can be better moderated, let me know. I may not agree with you, but I promise I’ll hear you out.

Second, regarding the deletion of links to websites that provide misinformation on the election. I’ll be straight here and tell you I have extremely mixed feelings about regulating the flow of information despite the fact that I have been asked to do so on more than one occasion. On the one hand, I believe that the proliferation of misleading information about the election, particularly from sources that should be trustworthy, is the main reason we are where we are today. On the other hand, I think that people should have access to any information they want, and it is their responsibility to determine what information is reliable and what information isn’t. Particularly, it is a bad idea for government bodies to get involved in information regulation. As the closest thing to ‘government’ at HC, my moderation of the election threads so far has been consistent with the latter viewpoint and I have never even considered deleting links to websites that are, in my view, purveyors of bad information, except when the links are posted where they topically don’t belong (e.g., threads that aren’t about the election). To be clear: I have no intention of changing this policy and I can think of no case in which I would delete links to any election information based solely on the content of the information. The only exception I can think of is links to websites that also include calls to violent action on the basis of that information. I will delete links to such sites without hesitation and there really is no discussion to be had about it. But to the more general point, I realize that my language regarding this issue was vague about my intentions and unnecessarily concerning to you all. I will remove this statement with the understanding that if a case arises that I feel goes beyond the pale, it will be discussed with other members of the MSHQ before any action is taken.

Finally, regarding artu’s comment. I agree: I do not want the discussion to feel too “rules-y” beyond the guidance already provided in the CoC and in retrospect the thread opening feels exactly the opposite of that. The main point is that all election related material needs to be in a single thread and, correspondingly, all posts and threads outside of the official election thread will be considered off-topic/spam and treated as such according to HC rules. I will also have little tolerance for breaches of the CoC. This policy decision was made based on a lot of community feedback through HCM, actually. But anyway, I will take your comment to heart and simplify the rules list at the outset of the thread so that it doesn’t feel “strange”.

In consideration of this feedback, I will amend the “Ground Rules” of the Election thread to be as follows:

Quote:

Ground rules: Please Read

(1) Any discussion about the 2020 US Presidential Election must be in this thread. Threads or posts on the US Presidential Election posted elsewhere at HC will be treated as off-topic/spam and will be deleted. If you are uncertain about what constitutes US Election related material, please send me an HCM before opening a new thread.

(2) As usual, please follow the HC Code of Conduct when posting in this thread. The Code of Conduct can be found here. Please read it before posting here.

(3) There is no need to send me complaints about users' posts in this thread. I will read the thread on a daily basis.

(4) Posts promoting or calling for election-related violence of any kind, or links to websites that promote election-related violence, will not be tolerated.

I continue to welcome comments on these modified rules or other aspects of the official 2020 election thread. Please consider the “1 post per day” timer to be reset for today in the interest of coming to a quick resolution to the 2020 Election Thread issue. Thanks for continuing to work with me to make HC’s OSM a better place.
