Technically it is very impressive, for that age, he knows the score like a mature conductor. But leading other people, inspiring and thrilling them when using gestures and eye contact requires more than technique, that's what I meant. Then I doubt this "something" can be realistically available at such young ages, yet we have Alma Deutcher, an amazing example of both spiritual and technical early achievement, but such complete geniuses are likely to reborn every 500 years.

Alma Deutcher: What's the point in making it uglier?

Is that "the point" or even the motivation though? They objected to Liszt the same way, you know the history. Not trying to justify relativism on an iditotic level but the premise of "idealizing ugliness since we're in modern times" is just shallow. She's a kid anyway, she has so many years to go deeper.

There is a saying: truth comes from children's mouth. I get your point but also there is such an strong push for specific and intolerant techniques, that is simply refreshing someone is still enough genuine to put it into very simple perspectives. Don't forget that Liszt, Wagner, Mahler, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and even Schoenberg and Berg at some level - to name some of the few considered as revolutionary, were perfectly able to express in any past language, both technically and structurally, they HAD every technique from before. This is where they choose to cut ties mainly because mastering techniques at such point allowed them to safely go farther and convey their message within unique layouts, but keep structures safe. This is no longer the case. Such composers spent a lot of time looking in the past to find what was working, what was good and what could serve them. Looking into the past nowadays is considered outdated, old-fashioned and moreover, unhealthy. This is very bad, especially when related to arts which are so long to master.

There is another girl on youtube, Nahre Sol, she has outstanding knowledge of classical techniques, which she will use to create her own music, at her own pace. I love this approach because it gives solid results. Compare a piece of her own, great dynamics, rhythm and structure, or THIS one working with modern sonorities, with the CRAP and CRAP bis our conservatories produce today. You don't need much study and work to write such things, as there is no judging criteria. As simple as that. Do you know that state culture departments are imposing contemporary (1995 - present) music as 1/5 of the season programming for philharmonics and universities? Modern music has lost its straightforward ability to reach people's hearts and souls, they now have to impose it otherwise no one is going to listen. So I am not surprised when a talented and uninhibited kid describes it as ugly, because most of it IS ugly.

CRAP bis

This is like 40 seconds, nothing sufficient enough to comment on but that 40 seconds didn't sound like crap, it's tense. I mean, it sounds like a promising intro, or is it just the whole work?

Hmmm, yes, it’s more like background sound for a horror film rather than an actual composition. It was a good 40 seconds they picked though.

Truly extraordinary. Seeing the innocent child yet inside her was very refreshing.

Yet, I must add: my wife and I both came away with a cautious feeling towards her and her sister. (can't explain it)

Then, seeing that old man m/l analyzing her? made us both feel kinda creepy. We do have parental reasons for being naturally cautious with children no matter what child but in this case, we are too far distant to have any reasonable objection.

Well, she is at a critical moment of her life, as in 3-4 years there will be thousand of youngsters of same age which can equally play and compose as well. So she is clearly now going both carpe diem and carpe noctem, however we will be soon fixed on her fate. It's silly to see such lovely and young girls becoming the attraction center of creepy scholars, but thats also part of the game.

Agree with you.

Our caution of course is not founded on anything tangible but we are aware of the sweeping changes that are the "selfie culture" and I suppose we may both simply be concerned about the natural attention she merits, and on to a great many things behind the scenes that we cannot understand at great distance.

I probably should not have replied further really, because I am doing nothing here but "thinking out loud."

If I try to give form to our Caution, I suppose it should run like this:
1. It has been said that Genius often wrestles with strong personality disorders. i.e. Churchill possessed a brilliant mind (setting aside what he pursued)but he fought the "Black Dog" all his life and medicated himself with drink.

So, now looking at the difficult and often complex life many "Masters" led, iirc, sometimes to ruin in some form or another? Caution needed? IDK

My own experience with a "gifted" young 13-year old boy was something similar that got way out of hand. This kid was set-apart and even though many of we, his team-mates liked the guy, he was in a league of his own. He was a baseball pitcher, that at 13 years of age, threw an 88mph fastball and already had a working curveball. We played only 7 innings in our league (13 & 14 year olds) and when he pitched he was almost never hit by our team (in batting practice) or other teams in games. He could normally strike out 19 of 21 batters because if any kid got the bat on the ball, it seldom was more than a pop-up.

When his dad showed up, he would grill that incredible Star about any little thing he did wrong. None us understood that father and fled whenever he came around. His son...always remained silent.

Years later I looked for his name to surface in the major leagues, because there were many professional pitchers that could not throw as fast as Rex did at 13. He never surfaced to make millions and I can only guess what happened.

Now his story is different than this music-star; I simply hope all of this attention is something that she properly masters once she is a mature adult.

I'm sure you know about Parents living their dreams through their children; I suppose after we watched her parents actions in parts of the documentary and their explanations...that could be the Caution also. Again, just a view from the cheap-seats and I wish her AND "her younger sister" happiness and success.

Cheers mate

End of ramble.

I had full grown beard students who couldn't align 3 hits left hand vs every 2 hits right hand so seeing this drums techniques is already impressive. But what is more amazing is the way they do it while performing complex choreography, those guys got some brain->legs->hands independence.

Agreed...their performance is stunning. I had no idea this stuff had become so...professional. I don't think I've experienced fear from such intense precision. Robotic comes to mind. Imagine the hours of practice needed to get that good. Olympian-efforts.

So, today, I’m in an etymology group on Facebook, somebody comes in, asks this question (not exactly an etymology question but, so what): In English, what is the exact difference between loneliness and solitude? Naturally, there are bunches of answers that go, loneliness is negative, solitude is when you prefer to be alone, it is a choice, etc. Then, Sevan Nisanyan (google him, terrific writer, also prepared an Etymological Dictionary of Turkish on his own) comes in, he says, there is not much difference really, one is prefered by the more educated, the other is a little modest, somebody objects with Paul Tillich:

Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.

I go, “Tillich kind of pushes it, yes, loneliness is ALWAYS negative but there are many contexts where Solitude means the exact same thing and is not positive either” and to give an example I link Billie Holiday’s Solitude. Now, Nisanyan, like an old wolf winking a yin yang at me, objects with this: Purcell

Edit: Oh oh, somebody objected that Tillich’s quote is originally in German anyway:

“Die Einsamkeit drückt den Schmerz des Alleinseins aus – die Abgeschiedenheit dessen Reichtum.“

Dont know if that corresponds to loneliness versus solitude. JJ?

That's the difference to me. Though I would call solitude a Peaceful time+place to relax, versus glory. However, I can imagine someone parenting 5-10 little kids could make the recovery of sanity...quite glorious.

It does. Solitude is indeed Abgeschiedenheit which is what an hermit is seeking, basically, so it's kind of an active thing. Loneliness - Einsamkeit -, is more like being left alone, basically a passive affliction not of one's own choice.
