First week, what am I supposed to do?

Hi, I've been playing Heroes online with a friend of mine for quite a long time now and we've both improved a lot. The biggest problem for me is that I cannot seem to figure out what to do in the first week. Should I build Town hall for money? Should I build Mage guild to equip my heroes with spells? Or should I just go for that critical dwelling?
And I usually buy way too many heroes and then most of them end up in a dead end, making me basically waste 2500 that I could have used to build things.

I am awfully bad at recognizing what to do from the map as well. I can't seem to be able to explore enough with just 2 scouts to know how I should approach the first week. I know stuff like Crypts and Wood/Ore are very important, but what if I play something like Fortress that doesn't have Crypts and has pretty lame early game troops?

I am not looking for anything super specific, but for some general tips about the first week. I should chain my first week army along all my heroes to clear the starting area as fast I can because the early fights give lame exp?

Some information that might help you:
-We play with Blockbuster or Skirmish templates
-Our only rule for now is no Conflux

I am really interested in becoming better at this game and possibly one day possibly start competing as well. Any help will be appreciated.

Erm, easy tips are:
- Always take gold from the chests
- Try to get as many creature dwellings in the first week as you can (or the best ones anyway) (the gold from chests, should keep you up and going)
- Chain units to creep faster
- Might heroes are better than magic heroes, but it's always good that a might hero specialises in a school of magic and buys a spellbook (for the mass haste, mass slow, DD or TP.)

Go for income upgrades when you can't get a creature dwelling.
Also, some upgrades are more important than others. you may consider getting upgraded elves asap, but skip out on hydras altogether for instance (probably not the best example, but just to give you an idea).

Well yeah those are generally what you should be doing no matter what, but are helpful anyways. My biggest issue is how many heroes I am supposed to buy and how to find out quickly where to go first and so on.
Those are what hurt my early game, hurting my overall game a lot as well.
And yes I can chain my heroes and I always take gold from chests. I mostly go for the creature buildings but because I don't upgrade money buildings and I buy too many heroes I don't have any money to buy those units until the very late game.

My strategy has always been the same during week 1.
Buy Capitol first, so you have no problem with money. After that, if you have less than 20,000 gold coins then buy stuff that costs around 1000-2000 gold coins. You should always have enough money to recruit all monsters by the start of a new week. I always use this strategy and 95% of the time I win against computer players. I don't really play Multiplayer.

I'd rather not lose week 2, but that is legit against the computer.

I'm pretty sure you can find build orders for certain factions around.
I have been doing fine with three heroes, but I haven't played heroes 3 competitively. Also, consider this: better to have all your resources spent and not able to get all the creatures than having 20K in the bank, but no creatures. Golden rule of strategy games, but you know this, I'm sure.

I'd look around for faction-specific threads and I also think there's a really big heroes 3 strategy thread around here.

EDIT: This is mostly advice on creeping I reckon, but it's a 40 page thread with a billion QP's, so there's bound to be solid advice here.

I've read every single post in that thread. Twice. But thank you anyways. I don't really trust many guides as most are outdated and seem to have rather weird tips. I'd rather hear directly from a great player who knows what he is doing.

Well, then you're better informed than I am. The good heroes 3 players are mostly gone, I suspect, though maybe they're all in the wog fora. I know angelito was really good, but anyone else... No idea, sorry.

Do you really think a good player has the time and willing to create for you a beginner guide? Register at wcl tournament(there is a forum here), play one of the top 20, save each day, get butt kicked. Then reload every save and look what he did, every turn. This is the faster way to learn.

I am not looking for a guide, just a few simple sentences that would lead me in the right direction. I'm confident in my ability to get better by myself when I figure out these things.
I am also already registered at WCL, just haven't gotten around playing anyone, don't feel good enough to even try yet.

this is what i do:

week 1: build: tavern, town hall, city hall, mage guild 1, marketplace, blacksmith, capitol. buy more heroes to spread out and flag as many resource-creators as possible(this also helps give you a wider view of the area, so that you can see incoming enemies).

week 2: build: upgrade castle(to double base creature growth), and start buying creature dwellings. continue to spread out, flagging everything you can, especially no-fight creature dwellings(the ones that just ask you if you want the creatures).

week 3: build: finish buying creature dwellings, but don't upgrade. keep spreading out, following plans for week 1 and 2.

week 4: build: upgrade all creature dwellings, and recruit. now you shouldn't have a problem destroying anyone. make sure to get all the spells you can get your hands on.

this method assures that you are not in need of something that you cannot buy yet. everything runs smoothly, from one build to the next, and you have covered maximum amount of ground, and flagged maximum amount of flag-able things. also, be careful in how you move. plan your movements accordingly, so that not even one movement point is wasted.

lol, that's how i learned to play c.o.d. every time someone gets a high number of kills with a low death count(moreso than me), i watch the video from his perspective, to see his loadout, his tactic, etc. sometimes they just get lucky, other times, they just have become accustomed to having their controller sensitivity turned up to crackhead speed.

Anyways I went ahead and carefully read the WCL rules and I think they are for the most part ok. I just don't understand why you are not allowed to upgrade Hive wyverns and why high level scrolls and hit and run are banned. When I have the time I should just go and find someone to play against. Do they have any average players left or are there just pros left?

You cant upgrade hives because the hill fort is banned from maps, thus only the one playing fortress would be able to do so, too big advantage.
High level scrolls are banned because dimension door, if used at proper moment could be game win.

And they don't like hit and run because they don't know how to counter it, noobz

Please...NEVER EVER go for money buildings in first week. You get your money from the money places on the map. First week mainly crypts, imp caches and dwarven treasuries. If you go for money, you will lose 20 out of 10 games against a human player. Winning against the comp means nothing (no offense...). You can stay in your town for 2 months doing nothing and start playing on day 1 week 1 month 3, and you will still win against the dumb err...comp.

Your strategy of course depends on your starting conditions (130%, 200%?) and your starting town.

The most common fault players make is UNDERESTIMATING the strength of their army! If you watch online players fighting, you will see how strong a little army can be depending on positioning, army size (TOO strong isn't good either...neutral army will split in lower amoun of stacks then...and the fight will be harder then...).

Just try some fights with small army (day 1 army), and you will learn to use every day more efficiently.

Oh yes that is reasonable, too big of an advantage.
With spellscrolls it shouldn't matter as those spells are banned anyways. I agree with level 5 scrolls, but level 4?
And I've heard a lot of people complain about hit and run. What exactly is so good about it? I just don't get it.

@Angelito:
So not even Town Hall in first week? If not then that's been the only mistake I've made with money buildings, I never even really get to build Capitol and City Hall takes too long to get as well.

And if you want to know, we usually play 160%. Should we play 130% instead? Do you think it's more balanced? We mostly play random towns these days because we want to get to know them all better, but my main town is Fortress when I do choose one.

You mention creature banks as an amazing source of income. I agree, but what if I play Fortress or other towns that don't have Crypts available? Where do they get their income? And what exactly is Fortress early army? Lizardmen don't do damage and Gnolls are weak.

One more thing, I shouldn't really buy any units on the first week unless it's important, so I leave the level 1 and 2 units at home? I played a match against a CPU just to test this and it seemed I had a lot more gold compared to what I usually have.
