Jennifer Bullard Interview at Acidcave

quoting CH news post

Quote:
Acidcave.net have launched a great interview with Jennifer Bullard, a member of the original developing teams at New World Computing. She is mostly known for her work as a designer and story writer for Heroes III and IV as well as the Heroes Chronicles series.

The interview is very nice and deals with the story in the Heroes III-IV games as well as the Might & Magic universe. Go here to read it.

A very recommended read if you are interested in original M&M Universe, great stuff

It seems that sometime during Armageddon's Blade development, something bad happened at NWC and they were never the same afterwards - possibly the effect of the fans' negative reaction to the Forge town. They managed to get Armageddon's Blade out okay, but then things went downhill. It was followed by the not-very-well-received Crusaders of Might and Magic (who played it, anyway?), then Shadow of Death didn't have as much new content as Armageddon's Blade, Might and Magic 8 was rushed and smaller than 6 and 7, someone thought that releasing a HoMM game for GameBoy Color was a good idea,
Then came:
- The not-very-well received Crusaders of Might and Magic (who played it, anyway?)
- Shadow of Death didn't have as much new content as Armageddon's Blade
- Might and Magic 8 felt rushed and wasn't as big as 6 or 7
- Someone thought that releasing 2 HoMM games for GameBoy Color was a good idea
- Warriors of Might and Magic was universally acknowledged to be terrible
- Quest for the Dragonbone Staff looked terrible and got bad reviews
- Legends of Might and Magic was also poorly received (starting to see a pattern here?) (However, it seems that Legends, Warriors, Crusaders, and the GBC HoMM games weren't developed by NWC, but by 3DO directly)
- The Heroes Chronicles games were just campaigns to tide us over until the release of HoMM 4
- HoMM 4 was interesting, but buggy upon release
- Might and Magic IX was buggy and incomplete
- The HoMM 4 expansions didn't have much content

It looks like if NWC had focused more of their resources on HoMM 4 and M&M 9, it would possibly have survived. I wonder what happened. Did someone start huffing paint or something?

Yeah, It's a same they couldn't make the games with enough time...more campaigns for vanilla HIV, a third expansion...what a shame

That "something bad" was Greg Fulton departure. He stayed only until AB was finished and after he leaft, no one rallyknow, what was future plans for next MM games and plots.

However he didn't left because of Forge or fans reaction, he left because he disagree with 3DO about "how to do games" and Forge removal was the last thing in long list 3DO mistakes about franchise.

Even if H4 and MM9 would be next H3 and MM6 games (in terms of quality), NWC wouldn't survive. 3DO was bancrupt (after they drown huge amount of money in failed 3DO console project and had "sequel each year" as business plan) and NWC would sink (and did) with them, no matter how good games they would produced. It was too late by the times of H4 and MM9.

It's a classic example of what happens when a great developer gets bought by a crappy production company with a lousy business model.
