Hey Ubisoft did great with H5, I loved H5. Great replayability.
But they certainly messed up with H6 as they tried to make it too complicated.

Simple turn-based game with deep strategy is what we need!

Nival did great. Ubisoft tried their best to spoil the game and succeeded. H5 could have been so much better than what it is.

H6 too complicated ?

They may have tried to make more complicated game, but I think they ended up simplifying it: less resources, creature pool, area of control, skill tree and the fact that you see creature numbers in advance before attacking. In the end, it ended up being repeatable and boring for me...

EDIT: I almost forgot about town conversion

Most of that only makes the game less and less deep in strategy.

I just talked to one of my brothers last night and he said the exact same thing about all of the latest games he's been buying. Many years ago he was afraid that our PC games would gradually be replaced by the console gaming design that the younger generations prefer. Seems he was right.

If you have time (this a long read), read this this blog about the differences in pathing between StarCraft : BroodWar and StarCraft II. While the autor keeps a very neutral approach, I think it shows how much micro potential there was on BW compared to SC2 - and also why battles where longer in BW and, thus, more entertaining

Yup Brood war was better, even most of the Koreans refuse to go over to SC 2. Personally I think SC 2 is a extreamly overrated game that introduced nothing new.
Infact it offered less but with new graphics.

But not all games today are dumbed down. Usually the bigger company = more casual games because they aim at a big audiance of casual players.
But there are som smaller companies that aren't following those rules. Im a hardcore fan of Men of War: Assault Squad. Its a fantastic game just because its not afraid to be complex and it offers fun gameplay.
Many modern games forget to be fun because they don't realize how boring  things get when things get dumbed down. H6 is a perfect example.

That was excellent! Thanks. I'm passing it on to my brother.

I think that well explains the "Mob" battle-mess, in the latest version of his favorite game.

Yes, I also think BW is way better than SC2. But starting a BW vs SC2 discussion would be derailing this thread too much, so, if you want to say more about it, well, drop here

It's always good to hear not every company is "dumb".

But on the Heroes saga, I think Ubi is doing wrong with making HoM&M more casual - it's a relative niche, and I believe they already can aim more audiance with the spin-offs. Best example : Clash of Heroes.

I wish H7'd be more classic

Yup same here. Enough of all the mobile phone and online heroes things.
Lke you said a game more like the classic heroes games, ofc new good gameplay features is always welcome.
Overall I think H5 did a good job with being similar to old Heroes 3 but introduced a better skill system and cool special abilites for monsters.

Most important of all i hope the developers knows what their doing with H7 and really do their best to make the gameplay experiance great.

Cutscenes ruining games! Blame dem lazy developers spending more time on a cutscene than the levels of the game itself!

I haven't been on this forum in quite some time, but I just have to chime in.

Things are coming to pass as I and many other longtime fans had foreseen. With Heroes V's success, Ubisoft made the mistake of turning its back on the fan base. They sold out and tried to reach out to a mainstream audience. That's why NWC will always have my respect--they never sold out and tried to please the mainstream. They paid dearly for it, but they did so with honour.

It started with their firing of Paul Romero and Rob King. And for the record, they were essentially fired. In fact, Paul expressed confusion that they were not asked to return.

Then, they started to actually go out of their way to piss on the legacy of the original universe... those of you who have followed the Might & Magic Facebook page know what I'm talking about ("REMEMBER HALFLINGS? YEAH, THEY'RE GONE FOREVER AND YOU'LL NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN." wtf?)

One of my biggest issues since Ubisoft took over the franchise was how they've been trying to go for that edgy, dark look. Might and Magic to me was always about that classic fantasy look--vampires that look like Dracula instead of Arthas rip-offs and elves that look like anime characters. I want monsters that look like the covers of classic fantasy novels. Instead of continuing to set the series apart in that regard as it always had, they decided to modernize it. A medieval fantasy game. Shame. "GRIFFIN ETERNAL!!!" I think not.

The only way I'll have any real optimism for the next game (if there is one) is if it looks more like the classic games than even Heroes V did, and Jon Van Caneghem is involved. Oh, 2D graphics (HD even) would be a bonus. Call me crazy but despite Heroes V being overall pretty good, I've yet to see Heroes of Might and Magic in 3D that didn't seem forced for the sake of modernization. A new game with hand-drawn, hi-res sprites would be amazing.

Sort of like the Black Dragon and Minotaur pics in this trailer:
